Problem with modding and chipping of PAL consoles is that most of the times the frame rate won't be the same as on original NTSC consoles and in the end it's still slower.
60 Hz modded PAL SNES for example runs at 59.56 FPS while original NTSC consoles run at 60.10 FPS (Source: https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/important_analog_capture_frame_rates_and_mysterious_gained_seconds_25.html#important_analog_capture_frame_rates_and_mysterious_gained_seconds_25).
Region-free modded PAL Playstations also seem to have frame rate inconsistencies for NTSC games (Source: https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Sony_Console_Region).
I guess it's better to get true NTSC consoles to be safe.
"how important is it ? Not that much."
While I think darthbuckethead has chosen the wrong words and sounds rude I heavily disagree with you PackSciences. A messaging system here on speedrun.com would be very important to me and would make my life as moderator much easier. Yes, twitter and twitch exist but I have experienced in the past that people tend to overlook twitch/twitter messages. Nevertheless this does not justify the wording darthbuckethead has gone with.
So, you go in a place that ISN'T in the game.
but...glitches ARE in the game and when they ARE in the game, why not using them to your advantage to beat the game as fast as possible? Do you want to speedrun or do you want to get an award for beating a game not as fast as possible just to impress Twin Galaxies?
As long as he didn't use any cheat codes or devices to manipulate the game it's totally fine.
speaking of Toy Story 2, is the emulator exclusive clip in Andy's House banned or is it still allowed?
1-2 days? lol
Well it's a frame perfect trick. Always hard to figure out a setup to hit the frame needed. Unless you can buffer it the only solution would be mashing and hope for the best or trying to build up muscle memory.
hey,
I have checked the "world record" run and unfortunately the runner has been using Visualboy Advance (VBA) which is a very inaccurate emulator and therefore banned in almost all GB/GBC communities/leaderboards. I already informed the runner about the fact that he has been using VBA for his run and I also tried to reach out for failed sail but unfortunately he didn't reply.
I am informing you guys again, stop using VBA for GB speedruns as it is not a good emulator (more informations about VBA here: http://www.speedrun.com/Speedrunning/thread/4sdl9 ). Use more accurate emulators like Gambatte, BGB or BizHawk.
I have made that video/comparison and Super Gameboy 2 and Gameboy Player are totally fine to be summed up in one leaderboard as they differ only with frames. Super Gameboy 1 is also fine after conversion (https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Super_Game_Boy_timing). I am actually more concerned about your FFL2 leaderboard as you are allowing Visualboy Advance even though I already told you twice that it is a very very bad GB/GBC emulator and should be banned for every GB/GBC leaderboard (you can read more about VBA here: http://www.speedrun.com/Speedrunning/thread/4sdl9 ).
For Duck Tales 2 we already have a Good Ending category and for Duck Tales 1 there are no runners for a Good Ending category and no one has shown interest in running such category.
- The other site just ignores you and doesn't verify your run if you're not a higher up time.
That's not true. All runs which are being submitted to mmrta leaderboards will be verified. Keep in mind that sometimes we have a lot of runs submitted and it takes some time to verify them all. ;)
NTSC games will run at 50Hz on a PAL N64 even with converter. You need a NTSC console to play at 60 Hz :)
BizHawk is fine since it is using Gambatte's core
Hey gameboy speedrunners,
since there are still a lot of gb speedrunners out there using inaccurate emulators (like Visualboy Advance/VBA) for their gameboy speedruns I would like to remind and ask you to stop using VBA and switch to emulators like Gambatte or BGB instead.
VBA is running Gameboy/Gameboy Color games at slightly higher frame rate than usual gb hardware and other accurate emulators and additionally can't emulate lag properly making it running the games faster and smoother.
While it might sound tempting to use a faster platform, it's still unfair to people who are playing on original hardware (Super Gameboy 2 or Gamecube GB Player) and accurate emulators (Gambatte or BGB).
How you as a gb speedrunner can help?
1.) Try to spot people who are using VBA and inform them about its inaccuracy and help them to switch to more accurate alternatives. I can understand that this doesn't sound easy at all since there are not always clear indicators what emulator is/was being used but in case of doubt just ask them.
There is one indicator (which I know of) that helps you to spot a VBA emulator and it's the red emulator notification in the left lower corner which usually shows up when you reset the game or turn it on and load a rom.
2.) To all the moderators of gameboy game leaderboards:
-
Always (!) define rules for your leaderboard and don't forget to turn on "Rules shown by default" in the leaderboard settings so one can see the rules as soon as you visit the site (like here for example: http://www.speedrun.com/ngsgb )
-
Include an explicit rule which bans the use of VBA and points out what emulators are allowed (for example: "Visualboy Advance/Visual Boy Advance-M (VBA/VBA-M) in any variation IS BANNED since it emulates GB games inaccurately. It is recommended to use BGB, Gambatte or BizHawk")
-
verify carefully and try to spot VBA users
I have noticed that it is getting better in general and people start informing about accurate gb emulators before they actually do runs but unfortunately there are still some who are taking the easy path and just google "gameboy emulator" which unfortunately leads to VBA as first result since it is the most known one.
Thanks for your time and reading!
calling Bamse "utter crap"
watch out my son, don't insult that game OMGScoots
Pokemon red?
I would like to know why you did switch back to an inaccurate emulator?
