Wasn't sure if this is the place to post this, but would it be possible for bmac_attack_64 to fill in for me? He would be doing a different category, but he's been derusting the game.
It's easier to just say please don't use any cheat codes than to split hairs about each and every cheat code's significance. Is it that unreasonable to ban using cheat codes in a speedrun? I didn't think this would be something people complain about.
When we removed his current pbs it defaulted to his old pbs, all of his mario runs have been removed now.
This is why we require video btw. You might say that it failed cause a few were let by, but imo it succeeded cause it was eventually caught. There is just not enough time in the day to watch every submission (we get like 3-10 a day), so generally videos aren't inspected closely unless there's something clearly wrong from first glance. In this case, the times submitted weren't particularly suspicious til this one (perhaps his other 16 min time).
I don't know if I'd say the community is torn between the preferences, at the top level everyone is on N64 and has been for a few years. If you're looking for interesting discussion topics about version differences I'm not sure SM64 is the game you want to write about. The most significant differences are just lag and loading. OoT (as an example) has more interesting version differences where certain speedrun routes are only doable on certain versions/consoles.
From Axon's SM64 google doc:
Major Version Differences -
N64(U) - The standard version most of us know and love from our childhood. Affected by lag and has other minor disadvantages compared to N64(J).
N64(J) - Nearly identical to N64(U) in lag. However, has some minor timesavers. Some text boxes are shorter (most notably the Eyerock dialog, which is significantly shorter on N64(J)) and some different star placement, such as the box star in JRB not being inside of a box, and the Penguin star in CCM spawning above the penguin’s head. On the downside, a fatal glitch can sometimes occur while doing SSL secrets which can cause your game to freeze.
N64(J) Shindou Version - This was the updated version created to support the rumble pack, and is arguably the worst version. While Mario gets some new and modified voice clips, it’s at a high price. Loading times are increased, Mario spins around when he grabs onto poles, and BLJ has been completely removed from the game.
N64(E) - The PAL version. Pretty much identical to N64(U) except that it runs at 50hz, meaning the game is slowed down compared to its NTSC counterpart. If you play this version, it’s highly advised you try to import an American or Japanese N64 or Wii to play a better version.
VC(U) - The fastest version. While it still suffers some of the disadvantages of the N64(U) version, all lag in the game has been taken out, besides the occasional framerate skipping caused by the VC emulator. However, VC emulation has generally higher stick sensitivity than the original N64 games, and this game is no exception, meaning some more precise movements can be tricky.
VC(J) - Like VC(U), it is identical to the version it is based off of aside from reduced lag. Unfortunately, instead of basing the VC version off of the original N64(J) version, they decided to base it off the Shindou version instead, meaning that once again this is a pretty worthless version.
You're writing an essay for a school assignment on the differences between VC and N64?
You don't need to show borders for the entirety of the run, if that's an issue (and it appears to be) just show the window at some point after the run. You can display the entire desktop for a couple seconds if that's easiest.
Just switch to windowed at the end of the vod if you get a pb and that'll be sufficient. Maybe leave a note in the comments for the mods if it'll be hard to find in the video.
I'll reword it later, I'm trying to get confirmation from some of the other mods.
I think most people know this (or assumed this) but since it wasn't explicitly stated in the rules before, Project64 2.x is banned. Project64 1.6/1.7 are fine.
I'm not planning to split, but if it ever causes an issue and people start crying then we can split.
I hope those points aren't directed at me cause I was the one who added 31/45/all coins to misc the last time. I'm just sick of doing things and dealing with backlash, a memes page would minimize the bullshit I have to deal with (and i'm not talking about verifying runs)
No one said anything in here but wait til we add a misc tab with 31, 45 and all coins and people will come out of the woodwork (cause that is exactly what happened last time). Misc lasted maybe 5 hours last time.
Having observed and participated in a few of these arguments over the years. I think that something akin to "super mario 64 memes" is likely the only chance for any of the misc categories to ever get a leaderboard on speedrun.com. No one can agree on what should/shouldn't be on the misc tab, and the result always seems to be to not use one at all. I don't mind submitting "super mario 64 memes" if people want this, if not you guys should probably get used to the idea of never having misc categories on speedrun.com.
I'm not saying this cause I am against using the misc tab, honestly idc if we put every idiot category under the sun in the misc tab, but I don't want to go against the grain, and the majority of runners do not seem to want this. If people want or are indifferent with the idea of a "super mario 64 memes" page I say go with that cause then maybe we'll never have to talk about this again.
Also, I was under the impression srcom was doing away with memes pages, but they just approved one for OoT so that does not seem to be the case. So, if we're gonna do this, we should do this, otherwise we're going to argue about this every couple months and my money is on "no misc categories".
This is still going on cause we're still talking about it and bumping this thread, but the general attitude seems to be to keep status quo.
I know you already found this, but just in case anyone else is curious about the same thing: http://sm64.iotku.pw/VC-Gecko-Codes/
If you mean adding more categories to the leaderboards. Last time this came up, the majority of runners seemed to be against the idea. The main reason being, no one seriously runs any categories other than the ones listed. Furthermore, we have to decide which categories are too retarded to be on the leaderboards, which is another can of worms.
Personally, I don't really care about having misc categories, but some people are passionately against it and I don't really expect it change any time soon. Feel free to tell me which categories you were thinking about, I'm kinda curious.
