Ahoy there fancypants,
As some of you know I took the decision a while back to add separate categories for the Saves and Saveless speedruns. I felt at the time it was unfair to more casual/not so serious runners who didn't want to take the time and effort to utilize save strats in their runs, as they are hard to do. Also, Save strats can save a lot of time if RNG is manipulated to the fullest and that was another reason I felt it was unfair on other people.
I however have decided that the split has been pretty pointless after all. Only 2 runners ever submitted to the saves category and that I think is the biggest indication that we needed to go back to ONE leader board. (Also frozenspade kept cajoling me to change it back, and in the end he was right)
As well as Credit Early becoming a thing and adding another variable into the mix, so from now on when you submit a run please indicate if your run was Saveless (standard gameplay) Saves (utilizing save strats) and if you got Credit Early (Opened the shopkeepers safe early in the run without knowing the code).
I have edited everyone's runs (Current and Obsolete) to reflect the changes, if anyone sees any mistakes please let me know in this thread or on discord.
I hope this decision sits well with everyone, and we can now move on.
Hey everyone!
Just thought I would post here and link to the Speedy Adventures Discord
Since this game does not have a dedicated discord (like a lot of games) I figure it's good to get anyone interested in running the game to join in on there.
https://discordapp.com/invite/kWCfAPu
If you would like to post anything related to CoMI (asking questions etc) then please use the Lucasarts channel. Otherwise feel free to come and say hi 🙂 Hope to see you there.
Hey everyone!
I decided to do some housekeeping and add some important stuff to the leaderboards.
From now on when submitting a run, please be sure to select the correct Emulator you are running on. The choices are:
ScummVM - Amiga ScummVM - DOS DOSBOX WinUAE
Also for anyone who does not know, most people running this game are now using Urquan's updated version of ScummVM. This version runs closer to 30fps than other versions. If you are aiming for quick times I would recommened grabing it at https://www.dropbox.com/s/767muz0n2if7klr/ScummVM.7z?dl=0
Finally, feel free to join the Speedy Adventures Discord, there are many Lucasarts and other games runners there happy to answer questions. Plus most are friendly, sometimes.
Thx for reading Steve

I just verified your run. Very good. Welcome to the leaderboards.
Although I would recommend you (and anyone running this game) download UrQuans version of ScummVM 2.1.0 here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DhD9QwcOuUMATDCo1TIZMO3hpC1MfvZk/view
It has been optimized to run as frame perfect as possible and is almost 2 minutes faster over the course of the run.
Also feel free to join the Speedy Adventures Discord server https://discord.gg/ZQm3X2E, where we have lots of fellow runners from all sorts of point and click games.
Thanks for the advice. I have corrected the 1st shopkeeper dialogue numbers.
Also brilliant strat on the safe, can't believe I didn't realise that before XD
I have added a new level category called Sword Master%.
Simply beat Carla as fast as you can.
Does anyone DARE to go for a 5 insult run with only a 2% chance of winning?
(credit to Frozenspade for the idea)
I know for sure it can go lower than 32, with great RNG luck. Just a case of hammering away at it.
Hermans showing up must be an Amiga thing.
You are right about scolling slowing you down a bit, I thought that too after I posted that.
Yeah cooking the items has no effect on anything. Maybe you can do it because it's fun.
Awesome thread
I had no idea you could get the ship that way. I just tried it out and it worked (having Guybrush not fully walk away twice, which I also didn't know would work. I thought you meant you had to leave the screen entirely). But even so, for speedrunning I am not sure if this can be faster than turning down 7 extras. Only if the time it takes to leave and return twice is quicker than that. On first glance it seems slower. Mainly because of Guybrushs unskippable walking.
Cool finding on the rest, didn't know some of that stuff was flammable.
Good idea on the compass and staple remover. It won't save much time because picking up the cannonball is so fast. Also never have a problem with meeting Herman there. He doesn't show until you go there a second time. Or maybe if you hang around too long?
It's such a shame you need the rope from the fort, because if you didn't what if you could get a 3rd amount of gunpowder AFTER loading the cannon. The walk to the hold would waste time but not going to the fort would be a huge time save. But I don't even know if you CAN get more gunpowder.
One thing i'd love to do is avoid talking to Herman after you push the rock, he wastes so much time.
Found a 5th one tonight
Only once have I met such a coward! = I'm glad to hear you attended your family reunion.
So "family reunion". is a 3 use multi-resp, and the best one to get in a run. (so far)
I have updated the Speedrun Guide to reflect my findings on this. Probably best to go check that out. But I will summarise it here.
As people should know. There are insult responses that can be used against the sword master that actually can work on 2 insults. The first being "family reunion" and the second being "Even before they smell your breath"
Yesterday I accidentally discovered another multi response (I call these Multi-resps for short), and today I found yet another.
So now there are 4 multi-resps we know of. This helps the run out significantly since every multi-resp is worth 2 insults against Carla. So just getting 1 in a run is helpful, 2 is gonna help a lot. 3 or more means having 8 responses (including the starting 2) Which is the minimum you want in the fight to have a good chance of succeeding.
I am curious if there are any more. I am not sure and testing takes time. If anyone wants to investigate please report your findings here.
You can tell the difference for sure the longer you play. The longer you go into a run without this glitch compared to having it the more obvious it becomes that you lose time.
Of course also the more you run the game you will become more used to how fast the game is, so if you didn't have the glitch you would be able to tell fairly quickly. After 150+ runs I'm 99% sure I can tell if I don't have the glitch as soon as Guybrush walks past the poster.
I have no idea about running the floppy version. We all just use the cd-rom version by default.
You can indeed use the lens in the spyglass to blow up the dam instead. It could be faster since you avoid a line of dialogue you have to read when you pick up the rock. I tried it out and I found if you put the gunpowder on the dam when you ENTER the scene for the first time then it's ready for you on the way back so you can use the sun on the lens (but only works when used in the correct position, otherwise Guybrush just burns the scenery. So it can result in a mistake). More testing is required on this. The difference between the strats may be almost unnoticeable.
Run verified
Getting the glitch is not too hard, it's harder to be sure you have it. I always had to time how long it took to walk from the lookout to the bar door, that should make it clear if you are walking faster.
Regarding the Hermanless ending, that's interesting he doesn't appear. I don't see you do anything different. Maybe that's just a version difference.
It should be a separate game entirely IMO. Whether it is run in Special Edition graphics or Classic mode, the game is too slow compered to running on ScummVM (with or without speed glitch) and it's unfair for times set on SE to be on this board.
That's my 2 cents.
Heya, welcome.
Interesting choice. Although I would say its not worth creating another category since this is much slower. Unless more people ran it. I will however add Amiga as a platform.
I would be interested if you can try getting the speed glitch to work. Oh and what's this different ending you hint at?
Anyway, go ahead and submit it and it can go on the leaderboard.
Wow is that really why the game is so fast? Guess that what happens when you have no defined rules for runs.
Another update: We now have a website for Speedy Adventures at https://speedyadventures.tv/ where you can find info about the marathon and run submission links.
Also the marathon will now not be taking place in May and should be happening in June instead.
Ok a quick update on what's happening with the Marathon.
We have a twitch channel ready to go at https://www.twitch.tv/speedyadventures, give it a follow if you want to see it live.
We also have a twitter at https://twitter.com/SpeedyAdv
The marathon was scheduled for May but it may be pushed back to June to give us more time to prepare.
As of right now no one has submitted to run Thimbleweed Park at the event, but we will also be streaming VOD's of speedruns during the marathon if we have games that we would like to feature but have no runners available at the time. This will also include a live commentary over the video. So if kcccc is available to at least provide commentary that would be awesome. Otherwise I can take his place.
As per my previous post if you would like to take part in the marathon please join our discord channel and let us know. Thanks.
