Try if you want, but 99% chances your run will be refused. And I'm not sure about the 1% left WutFace
Too much drama = Chibi's path, so yes, be very careful about that.
About Lance's statement, I think the talk section is a free discussion area to speak about anything, but some topics here could be moved from talk to speedrunning section, if the debated informations are worth it.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I guess a lot of topics are here because some people don't know if the subjects have been already dealt with, or not. Or some people assume that posting here won't bother the speedrunning or the streaming sections, which are used to have serious answers to serious questions. It's a safe spot to ask or state anything.
The fact of having problems is very relative and very proper to each person : All people have issues, with minor or big impact in their lifes. But whatever you are enduring, life is all about facing problems that sometimes you didn't ask for, and overcoming challenges that sometimes you can't avoid.
Unfair or not, there are here, right in front of you, letting you the choice to fight, or to give up. I don't have the right to say to you which one is right or not, because I don't know your issues, and I'm not you. I can just guide you with these following questions :
-
Are these problems avoidable if you decide to change anything in your life ? (environment, social people, hobbies, qualities and faults, schedules, habits...)
-
If it's a no, are these problems possible to resolve if you decide to change anything in your life ?
-
If changing anything in your life can resolve this, is it worth the try, even if you have to do some sacrifices ? (like doing hard work, killing your freetime...)
It's complicated to help you precisely because I don't know your issues, and I don't want you to reveal them publically. But keep in mind that like DarkerStix said, you still can ask people for help or advises. Some solutions require time, new points of view and another oxygen to be found.
A friend of mine guided me on Limbo when I start speedrunning, and I admit it's an interesting one to begin with :
-
Around 10 euros to buy on Steam, but the game was released in 2011, so I think it's frequently on sales (on Steam I mean)
-
Less than 100 Mo to download it, and it doesn't need powerful pc's stuff
-
Colorless puzzle game with dark atmosphere, 2D, very simple gameplay (One button to jump, one button to interact with objects, stick on controller or keyboard to move)
-
Limbo is very well programmed, so there is currently no big glitch to deal with. This game is all about exploiting the physics to find shortcuts, looking for deathless run, and getting more and more precise with your moves.
-
WR for the normal route (~New Game any%) is 40:55. So it's a sub 1 hour run
To put in a nutshell, Limbo is a 2D game which is able to fit with your PC, and help you to learn the basics of speedrunning (precision, cycles, RNG, skips, glitch)
Effort (Talent does not imply that some players can and others cannot. It implies that people who don't have it will work harder to reach the same level)
Dedication
Lot of time
Training
Schedules
Regularity
Humility (from casual play to speedrun, from fail to win, whatever how good you are, you will face countless bad times, and have to accept that time is needed to overcome obstacles, or that sometimes today's not the day).
If we are talking about popular players on Stream, add some skill to entertain and interact with viewers, cool attitude...
I think basically, people are just missing the point that before reaching the top of any game, players needed to fail more than anyone else to produce any decent result, through researchs and tests, through training.
"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."
- Michael Jordan
How many runs did we offer to the garbage can because of reading the tchat ? Kappa
What about changing the title of the topic by adding something like "EMERGENCY ONLY, READ FIRST POST" ? Maybe that could make it crystal clear.
A ) Speedrunning is a lifestyle's choice, which game we run is up to each speedrunner, with the pros and cons it implies.
B ) Games with full RNG can give cancer to some runners, but some others are very passionated to them, because of the challenge they offer. Some WR or awesome runs are only done when planets are aligned, And they're OK with that. Once again, it's up to each speedrunner.
C ) What are these questions doing here ? I can see a little connection between your question B and the topic, but that's all.
Well, maybe me and few people are thinking like this, but we are speedrunners. We all respect skill and good manners (I assume). Knowing who you are or not, if you submit some decent records of your performances, they will be accepted, as long as your runs follow the established rules (when does the timer start, when it ends, required configurations...).
LGBT or not, if you're running some known games, and are good enough to get world records or something close to, be sure people will look closely your runs. Because gender is not supposed to matter when efforts and skills are here.
If I'm watching a Stream, and someone is playing good without webcam or microphone, I recognize the talent before the person's identity, right ? That's the same logic.
Maybe I'm far from the crowd I'm supposed to follow, but if you're a good and pleasant runner, that's enough for me.
Welcome anyway, open arms for me.
2D games ? Steam ?
- Ducktales remastered (you can choose the difficulty)
- Freedom Planet (spicy Sonic-like)
- Cave Story (medium or harsh, depending which end you want)
- Out There Somewhere (fast game, funny executions, don't sleep on your controller)
- Broforce (Funny to play, various characters, but RNG city to speedrun)
- Guacamelee (not sure, but probably harsh to speedrun)
- FEZ (Very particular gameplay, memory brain required)
- Metal Slug (Shoot, run, shoot, run. And don't forget to shoot)
Painful list (subjective):
- Super Meat Boy
- They Bleed Pixels
- INK
- Wings of Vi
- Völgarr The Viking
- Rogue Legacy
- Dustforce
Favorite Game : Day of the Tentacle Least Favorite Game : Spirou (RIP kid's dream) Favorite piece of music from a game : Quackshot - Locomotion Favorite Video Game Level : Orient Express (Crash Bandicoot Warped) Favorite video game mascot : I don't have one A game that you like but no one else does : INK A game that you don't like but everyone else does : Skyrim What game do you think is underrated : GUN (to the point it's harsh to find it on the forum) What game do you think is overrated : Minecraft (No offense, but I don't understand the gigantic hype) What Game did you most recently play for the first time : Inside My Radio (#KappaStix)
About free music, I can't say it's 100% true, but I tried some music, and some are muted. But OST from video games generally pass successfully (that's logical, or each time we play on Twitch, musics from games we are streaming would be cut off).
I can't confirm it's 100% true, but for the moment, my video games' OST playlist has no problem on Twitch.
I agree with the needed video, even if sometimes, decent records are impossible to get (bugged capture device, censured audio...).
Accidents are a major part of the speedrunning's life. Very unfortunate sometimes, but we have already accepted (I think, I suppose) the games might crash, and kill our PB paces in the process. It's sad when it happens, but our main quality is to overcome obstacles, even if they are painful.
Even if the run's dead because of no video proof, we still can grind to reproduce our performance. It's tough, chances can be very thin, but I assume that we are used to fight our own limits and retry over and over again.
However, I don't mind that much if someone beats an entire leaderboard with no video. But I'll probably have an argue with him/her if he's/she's complaining about another person who comes from nowhere, and steals his/her throne with proofless score. Fair enough, right ?
- IMR is your field, so that's a logical choice.
- Be careful with INK. Try to time your runs, because it's a die & retry that can eat your time easily. Like Super Meat Boy, the difficulty of the game might crush your estimates.
I don't know that much the rest of your list.
Aye.
I didn't stream that much during a day, but if you're willing to make your marathon the most enjoyable you can, I can logically say this to you :
-
Explore your Steam games a lot, because your game's choices will matter a lot. Not only because it has to be enjoyable for your viewers, but you also need to appreciate them to make them cool to watch. Popular games are good, not only because they are publicly well known, but because you obviously will get better chances to find someone who can help you about commentaries. Coop games are funny too.
-
About visibility, your twitch friends can help you by hosting your marathon. They can make your twitch tchat cool too, and they are generally good allies when it comes to moderate if needed.
-
That's obvious, but doing some publicity to announce your future marathon, and choosing wisely when it will start and end. You won't get the same people if you're streaming during day or during night, week or weekend.
I'll probably get more ideas later, but I gotta go.
Well, it clearly depends of active runners. So yes, Naija% may go on the main page for the moment, and then come back to the misc categories if needed. Or maybe one day, a misc one will become FOTM, and go to the light. It's a change, but not a definitive one.
I don't know if that's old or not, but on the hard route, after the double ladder/gatling part, you have this annoying saw, which is moving right and left.
Usually, we have to wait for the saw to let it go right, left, then right again, but it's possible if you have a perfect timing to climb to the left side without waiting the complete saw's cycle (the saw goes right, and then, you can immediately rush to the left)
Edit : some problems with Youtube, Here's a gif instead :
My best friend made me dive in during a drunk night. 2 months later, I'm still stuck in this world, looking for more sensations than playing games casually.
- Incredible community
- Epic achievements that you can't find in the casual world
- Surnatural events and stories to live with other runners
- Killing time
- Spending more time enjoying a single game
- A great lesson about perseverance and pushing your limits
- [insert other good reason]
After the last Buckeye's performance, the difference between him and Meleagant is just a little piece of dust :o
Congratz dude !
