Not all sports are about groups of players competing together. There are a number of sports and games, like motorsports, which has a single racer but a team supporting them.
This is irrelevant to the point I was making. Whether you look at individual runners or put a "team" behind them, you're incentivizing them to hide their findings until they can fully profit from it as evident by the fact that you clearly stated you want to find a way for runners to generate livable income off of this. That level of incentive will lead to people hoarding strats until they garner that full income.
I am also interested in putting different games next to each other
This doesn't make sense and won't lead to any meaningful discoveries. Most games, even those in the same series, have fundamental differences that require a different set of skills to complete at top level. Even games that are made on the same engine like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask have differences in tech that make the runs completely different (hovering and ISG are done differently in MM for example. They're the same concept, but the way in which you perform them is different).
A reason why I am interested in the competitive level, is I want to see how people can change games, and play different games at a top level or near the top
If this is what you're interested in, then you should be avoiding the competitive grinding scene for the most part and engage more with the TASers and glitch hunters, not the runners. A lot of runners just grind the fastest route, that's what leads to better times. Granted, along the way they may find small optimizations that lead to better results, but most of the stuff that results in changes to the game/run is done completely outside of the "WR grind". The TASers or glitch hunters who experiment in weird ways are going to find game/run changing things much more effectively than someone just grinding a category.
This is about testing and improving human performance
There's very little "human performance" in this hobby outside of managing nerves or building muscle memory. Watching a top runner or learning what makes them tick won't necessarily improve your performance in any way because people are ticked off by different things. The best runners of their games are the ones who have built up muscle memory to perform precise tricks, while also understanding any complexities within the game and it's route (this can, admittedly, be taught, but not by watching someone), and a key aspect of any good runner is just better management of nerves when you're on a good run. Neither of these can really be learned from someone else - another runner can't teach you muscle memory, you need to practice. Nor can they teach you to control your nerves, you need to learn what calms you down on your own. This isn't powerlifting where you can learn to lift more weight by watching the form of professionals.

Granted, some of what I've said here is my opinion on certain matters, but the main point of all of this is that I'm honestly not sure you understand this hobby at all. There are various communities within speedrunning that are trying to grow it and do more incentivized competitions, however they've done that with a much deeper understanding of the right way to do it (and they've also received flack for trying to make this hobby more eSports like).

You’re looking at speedrunning in a vacuum as if it’s only about the competition. It’s not, there’s a heavy community aspect to it that involves a lot of people working together to cooperatively lower a game’s time. If you turn the hobby into an eSport - one that is only about competition - then you shatter the community aspect because you incentivize people to hide discoveries until they can fully profit from it.

This hobby is rooted in competition but it’s so much more than just that. That’s why it doesn’t make for good eSports - eSports are about teams going for a prize. There’s no prizes (usually) in speedrunning aside for whatever satisfaction you receive from a new PB.

I’ll be coming in dead last, that was pure gibberish lol.

I’d be curious if the XBox sees it too. Not that I’ll really have an “oh I know the issue” of it does, but it’ll at least provide some clarity on whether it’s a PS2 problem or a 480i over component problem.

The only other idea I might have is with the PS2 component cables themselves. I find that surprising to be the issue since they seem to work fine most times, but what brand are you using?

AntarcticaTimmiluvs5 years ago

Do you have the issue outputting component for any other consoles? Is it every 480i PS2 game that sees that audio issue? I can’t speak for the quality of that converter, but I use a Retrotink-2x to go from component to HDMI on 480i PS2 games without issue.

If you only see that in 480i mode on the PS2, then my gut would tell me that that converter seems to struggle with that signal (although why audio matters at all between 480i and 480p is weird to me since they only differed in the video component).

EDIT: I just notice that the converter claims to support 480i no problem, so that last paragraph is moot. And I’m stumped as to what the issue could be.

Well if that's decided, then I guess a split isn't happening.

If I'm being honest, that just about kills my desire to run this game's ILs anymore the same way I lost all interest in the full game, but I completely understand why you don't want to do a separation right now. Glad to see a lot of people share their opinions on it though, and it was cool to see all the research that came out on the differences between the versions/consoles.

Good luck to everyone on improving their times.

GBP+GBI is usually allowed, I can’t think of any games that don’t allow it. But there are very few global rules, you’ll need to verify with either mods of the games you want to run or you’ll need to check the Rules on each game to see if the explicitly disallow (or allow) something.

We’re going to need to know your budget to recommend some capture cards. You can get HDMI capture cards from around $80 and all way up to $300+

You can find some timers listed there. LiveSplit is by far the most popular.

The bitrate part depends on your internet upload speed. The lower that is, the lower you need to set your bitrate to.

But otherwise, what Quivico said is good. Start at 720p30fps and if that results in stuttering in your video or you notice that your CPU utilization is high, then drop it down to 480p30fps. Keep doing that until you find something that won’t completely choke your CPU
Ok Timmy but a lot of runs do not have videos, as runners create so many runs they will not make videos for every run.
This is a valid point. However, many games require video, so yes, people will create videos for every run they do. The number of games not requiring video is probably not that high outside of maybe mobile gaming where screenshots might suffice.

Also, the forums still do see spam, but it gets cleaned up fast due to the diligent work of the site mods (and even then bots can stick around for a couple days if a site mod is busy). It used to be worse, but it’s still here.
I can't see any headaches bad enough that would arise from the implementation of comments that doesn't have an easy solution.
This point has already been beaten dead, but the forums already get spammed as it is, adding another avenue for people to spam, and for bots to post, is a headache. Granted, the site has gotten less spam once the rule of needing to be a user for 10 minutes was put into place, but bots stop find a way around it. Again, it’s not unworkable nor is it a bad idea, but
I do wonder what other things the site puts their future focus on that is more beneficial than giving the people a better way to express themselves.
The site already has ways to express yourself through customizable profiles, social media links, customizable games and forums, so that point is moot.

As for other things the site can focus on: Messages, Multiple LBs under one game, Variables that can be applied to certain categories instead of all, Enhancements to IL boards, Fixing bugs that persist in the new layout, Ability to move runs without needing to resubmit them, Ability for mods to backup LBs independent of the site to facilitate easier restoration.

That’s just a handful of long standing QoL things that the site would benefit from immensely more than adding a comment section to videos.

Again, it’s not that this is a bad idea or an impossible one to implement/control from spam, it’s just (mostly) redundant right now as there are ways to still comment on runs through other means, and the site can use a lot more user friendly QoL boosts.

It’s not a revolutionary idea, no, but it’s also redundant for a site like this. This site hosts videos that exist on sites where comments are mostly supported. YouTube already has a robust comment system, so why not just leverage that?

Sure, Twitch may not have a comment system in place, and it’s definitely the second most popular way to post runs here, but there’s still better ways to contact a runner there (like through a message in their chat when they stream again).

It’s been a common thought whenever this idea comes up that it’s not necessarily a bad idea, it would just introduce more headaches than benefits. There’s other things the site can focus on that would be infinitely more useful than trying to find the best way to introduce a comment system (heck, messaging on the site would serve a comment section’s purpose too). All in all, you’re better off using the site where the video is hosted to communicate with the runner (or one of their social media links).

Idk who the ethereal “they” is. This community promotes accessing the discord, so unless you’ve been previously banned or something I can’t imagine why anyone would direct you away from it.

The graphics plugin applies to emulator. And no, WiiVC doesn’t crash during GIM, that’s why all the top Any% runs are on VC.

And I recommend getting a discord, most communities have servers nowadays.

Okay, so post them or join the discord where you’re more likely to get better help (and the responses will most likely be quicker).

I’d recommend learning the instruction set for MIPS if you want to learn assembler. It was common in game development for many years (I believe up to the PS2) so if you’re interested in disassembling games that might be up your alley.

You can’t use a 1.0 WAD for running the game, it’s not allowed. You need to use a 1.2 WAD (the VC version is 1.2 so you need to use the same version in a WAD).

Seems pretty even to me on what people want (I see 2 for wanting it split, 2 for not, and Lemon who never gave an opinion, only some options). So, I feel like it's up to the mods at this point to decide what they feel the best course of action is based on what was said/shared here.

You can turn off auto verification for mods on Leaderboards already. There’s no mandate on it, it’s a community by community basis. The site doesn’t enforce a lot of things down to the individual communities.
