In PJ64 v1.6.x, you can add codes by right-clicking the SM64 ROM you want to play > Edit Cheats > right-click > Add New Cheat... Nonstop can also be played on the Usamune practice ROM, but you must turn off all other options/codes besides the required ones for nonstop (if you plan to submit to the leaderboard).

The correct nonstop codes can be found on the rules tab of the Nonstop leaderboards: https://www.speedrun.com/sm64ce#Nonstop

I'll also post them here for convenience. Note that the codes are different depending on the region of the ROM.

Nonstop: US: 8124DDBC 2400 8124DE1C 2400

JP: 8124DC1C 2400 8124DC74 2400

Skip Intro: US: 8124BBD4 2400 JP: 8124BA34 2400

Soft Reset (A+B+Z+Start): US: D133AFA0 F000 8033B239 0004 D033B26B 0000 8033B239 0001

JP: D1339C30 F000 80339EC9 0004 D0339EFB 0000 80339EC9 0001

Do you have an example? What kind of controllers and sticks are you using? OEM or third party? Are they in good condition or wore down?

I've never heard of a console itself missing inputs. If you have an everdrive, there is a controller test suite that you can use to show the range of the stick and test all the buttons.

I'm assuming @Darkv is asking about input displays. This depends on what platform you are playing on.

If playing on emulator, you can easily setup an input display with third party software. This thread may be helpful: https://www.speedrun.com/sm64/thread/hv4vt

If playing on console, you'd need an external, physical device (such as an arduino) that reads the inputs from the console and sends them to the PC. Then you'd use third party software (NintendoSpy is popular) to display the inputs.

As the reply above says, video platform doesn't matter. What does matter are the VOD requirements listed in the rules:

-Entire run in one segment -Clearly audible game audio -The video link MUST embed on the run page (e.g. no URL shorteners, or sketchy file sharing sites) -Twitch VODs must be highlighted

So basically whatever platform you choose to host your VOD, make sure the VOD is permanent and meets these requirements.

Some category extensions and Stage RTA's allow Usamune, but as Gorilla explained, main categories and most category extensions require official releases of SM64.

Looks like their site is having issues. Here is a link to the AS64 discord: https://discord.gg/HKHzX8te

In the #releases channel, you can still access the AS64 download and the setup tutorial video.

The leaderboard for 16 Star (and all other categories) is not solely played on N64. As the two previous responses pointed out, you can submit your NSO runs as VC (Virtual Console) Switch runs. You can either submit your 16 Star runs to the main 16 Star category or the 16 Star No LBLJ category extension (or even both). If submitting to the main 16 Star category, there are two "Platform" fields, the first of which you'd select "VC" and then select "Switch" in the second field.

It's pretty straightforward, but if it helps, here's a written guide on submitting runs: https://ukikipedia.net/mediawiki/index.php?title=RTA_Guide/Submitting_Runs_to_Speedrun.com&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop

Good luck!

Kinda like lej said, seems unfulfilling but I guess you don't know until you try it. Is there any documentation on all tree locations? It would be nice to see an example run too.

I've heard that the NSO (Nintendo Switch Online) version on the switch suffers from major input latency. If you haven't Speedrun yet, you may not notice the latency at first, but it is most noticable when swimming or during Bowser throws.

There is also the Super Mario 3D All-stars version on the switch, but in that version BLJs are patched meaning 0, 1, and 16 Star runs are not possible.

The easiest and cheapest way to at least start running this game is with the use of an emulator on PC. Here is a link to the resources page of this site which has a link to the download for the appropriate emulator, Project64 v1.6.1: https://www.speedrun.com/sm64/resources

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped make this happen, whether that be sharing your opinions, running the category, or by other means.

https://www.speedrun.com/sm64ce#All_Goombas

I can't take credit for creating this category, obviously I wasn't the one who started this thread, nor was this an original idea (the game is 25+ years old, there's no way this was a new idea). But I am happy it was so well received and that so many showed interest and contributed.

The discord server has served its purpose, but If anyone wants to join to share their progress with the category or discuss ideas, it will remain up: https://discord.gg/7mfaZRCxc7

Happy Goomba hunting, everyone!

But you're going to have a hard time getting a hold of one of those for a while. Your best bet may be ebay.

I'm glad people are enjoying the category!

FYI we've already sent everything off to the Mods and they are working on putting it up on the site. It should be a real CE soon!

@NaturallyAllen I really like your THI routing, might start doing some of that myself. I got you and @jpufry added to the unofficial leaderboard on the Google Doc. It's so cool to see everyone's take on this and all the little variations.

All known issues are listed in there and it'll make it easier to discuss and finalize the rules. Please join if you want to contribute!

Thank you!

Although we are waiting on several additional submissions, we officially have 12 recorded runs. Thank you to everyone who has submitted! Depending on what decisions we make regarding the rules, some runs may become invalid but we will handle that once we get there. The big thing is finalizing the rules. Concerns are posted in the "TBD" section of the google document and can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/192tXZ16aqXZX6S8nWHmsxxEEfp3F8VixeQuOZvqXI3g/edit?usp=sharing

I feel like we are still in a weird spot with the rules. Communicating through a forum thread is proving to not be the best way to coordinate this. I feel like we either need guidance (maybe from a Mod?) or a better way to communicate. Does anyone have connections with a Mod so that we could get some guidance/direction, or would people be interested in a temporary Discord server for better communication? Either way, we'll need Mod input at some point.

@packerzilla very well done! I used to do the same SSL strat with pillarfull (which is obviously very slow haha), but I think you're right, with pless it may be faster. I also like your WF 100 + reds, may start doing that myself. I updated the unofficial leaderboard!

New Mexico, USASaySurprise3 years ago

@Fresh_Bae I've thought about it and I think it just requires a THI redo. I think it's a rare occurrence, but it's not dead so just pray it doesn't happen in a good run.

@TurkeyCookTime Thank you for your input! Where did you get this information? Especially #1. I'll have to do some testing with this.

New Mexico, USASaySurprise3 years ago

So I ran into this tonight, honestly not sure what the think of it. The Goomba was clearly still alive. Not sure what triggered it. I assume this would mean I would have to redo THI or reset haha.

New Mexico, USASaySurprise3 years ago

Now that I am thinking about it, SSL may be controversial. Based on most opinions I've heard, it looks like we will be requiring re-killing all Goombas if Mario dies before killing them all within a stage.

With most current runs, runners are killing the three canopy goombas in SSL, and then collecting the Top of the Pyramid star. Then they re-enter SSL to enter the pyramid to finish off the remaining Goombas. When they re-enter SSL, the three canopy goombas are obviously respawned. Does anyone see this as an issue? Opinions?

A simple fix would be to do Talon, then Pyramid, then re-enter SSL, kill canopy Goombas, then enter pyramid for remaining Goombas. That way all the Goombas are killed in a single SSL entry, and no Goombas are respawned.

@HiiragiTia I just meant, if we are allowing Goomba "deaths", calling the category "Kill all Goombas" seems inconsistent. But again, I personally don't care what the category is called. I don't think cloning will be an issue.

@Falling_Tacos makes some good points. I don't think the point is for it to be satisfying in a visual sense. I feel that the unique movement, and doing such movement in the quickest/most efficient way possible is the intent of most speedruns. I feel like star collections does not serve a significant purpose in this category, other than allowing us to beat the game.

But this is great! This is exactly why we need community input, and I appreciate all of yours! this is how we refine the category and make it happen!

New Mexico, USASaySurprise3 years ago

@HiiragiTia Thank you for your input! I agree with everything you said.

I personally don't care what the category is called, but if we are counting Goomba "deaths", then Mario technically isn't "killing" all Goombas.

I agree we should require re-killing all Goombas if Mario dies without killing all of them within a stage. The job doesn't feel "complete" otherwise and as you said, it would be weird to simply pass by Goombas.

I like your thoughts on using the death barrier as a tool. That solves the Mystery Goomba issue pretty nicely.

Regarding my question about Goombas falling off the stage on their own, you mentioned it should count as long as the player witnesses the fall. I haven't seen any instances where a Goomba falls off stage out of the players field of vision, but following the death barrier rule it seems it would still count even if it is not witnessed by the player (similar to the Mystery Goomba, although I don't think the Mystery Goomba is falling off the stage, rather spawning off stage). This still feels like a grey area because there is no efficient way for a player to tell if a Goomba has actually fallen off the stage on their own in the case that they don't come across a Goomba in a spot they are supposed to be (but I imagine such a case would be very rare, if possible at all, we just don't know yet).

Regarding your question, "Allowing to die after killing all Goombas or do you need to collect a Star?" I'd say dying is allowed. The All Coins CE requires star collection after collecting all coins within a stage because that saves the coin collection count into an actual value to the game file (seen as a high score). As far as I am aware, the game does not store kill counts (specifically Goomba kill counts in this case) regardless of whether or not the player collects a star. For this reason I do not think star collection should be required.

@AirBrush45, @Falling_Tacos I'm glad you guys are crafting an LBLJ route! I knew a faster route would show up soon, and I'm excited to see someone shave a minute or two (or more) off the run!
