We also have the highly cinematic 'All Mods are Racist' thread. There's actually an entire Twitter account dedicated to these kinds of posts but it was a brief for-fun project, inactive now, can't remember who was behind it. https://x.com/SpeedrunPosts
Without knowing the specifics of your setup, this is usually something which goes wrong for me when I've accidentally set the timer to compare against game time (or real time if you normally use game time). This has also happened to me before when I loaded the wrong layout which didn't include the load remover and it reset the actual timing widget to game time, without setting the program broadly to compare against game time, so it might be worth checking that.
That would be a great step on trying to understand the issue. I might apply 'Occam's Razor' and try emailing Redefinition Games via their info email on the website, it's been years since any post information so I doubt I'll have much success but it's worth a go. Either of us or someone else can try decomping the game too.
I don't have any problem with it being for fun, but right now it seems you can have a WR in a hugely contested category, with a time of 25 seconds, whilst being 6 seconds (or more than 20%) slower. Surely you'd want to at least find out why this is happening?
@computerdwarf Will there be any changes based on this, or will it be left as it is?
No worries about uploading the time, we're glad people are interested in doing that haha. Just such a shame the IGT coninually proves to be so poor. I do wonder if an improvement on the IGT might be possible with autosplitting, via LiveSplit for instance, but it'd make the leaderboard less accessible to new runners...
I'm afraid I'm returning to this thread to bring up IGT again;
The (now former) WR by @Collencyte has an IGT of 26 seconds, no worries, the RTA from when the player was able to move around looks to be (roughly) 28 seconds, a 2 second disparity.
The new WR in all items by @Dario18j7 has a disparity of about 8 seconds, between the rough RTA and the IGT. This is obviously a huge difference elapsing but I'm not sure what the best course of action is - this is a leaderboard for a fun little, heavy RNG, indie game, but it feels like some of the best times have been achieved dubiously.
To make it clear, I'm not saying anyone has done anything wrong, just about the opposite, these are fully legitimate times within the rules but it's a confusing thing. I can't make a side-by-side right now but if anyone wanted to do so it might help understand the issue.
As far as I can tell, Portal's Least Portals category is still sorted by time taken but if it's discovered that it's possible to use fewer portals to complete the level (and that with fewer portals you cannot match the existing times) then current runs are invalidated. One case where it appears a method was found to use fewer portals also has one run with more portals but it's much slower. I don't know if it's possible to implement a combination of the two (time and variable) which simultaneously change leaderboard standings without making separate subcategories, but you can do the same version of theirs with variable annotations and make it so a faster time obsoletes other runs (or doesn't). Although it should be possible to manage such submissions manually, unless it's an incredibly popular leaderboard.
Grand, thanks, unsure when I'll have the time to think about giving it a run but I will :)
I'd also enjoy seeing a page for TITP 2, more objectives and more involved etc.. I considered playing through the game as a submission speedrun after my (rather slow) Any% for this but then didn't have as much free time and it didn't seem worth it. Btw congrats @tyrob34 on the WR, would've said so months ago had I known ;)
I'm so sorry @Thegroundisshaking for not having noticed this thread at the time - the version on the Google Play store does appear to have been made by HIPPO who also published the HTML version of the game, so I see no reason why it shouldn't be a valid way of playing the 'original' game.
However you obviously have very different peripheral control on mobile, so it should have a separate category for all runs done on the mobile version. That's something we can definitely implement if there's any interest.
