PS since WhiteHat decided to slander the runner in question, let me tell you the timeline of how this happened:
Runner: Please add a PAL board,I have a PAL cart.
Me: PAL A or PAL B?
Runner: (looks it up, sees that his cart looks different from PAL B )
Runner: Never mind, I have an NTSC cart.
Runner: (sends picture)
Me: (sees that picture is PAL A, UK/Italy, even with a bilingual English/Italian sticker on the back and two Seals of Quality)
Me: That's PAL A. I'll add it.
WhiteHat, you don't even run the game.
KyhYang, who does it benefit to merge PAL times with NTSC when they're not comparable? If we had a way to calculate a comparable time, and speedrun.com had a way to post a time conversion column, then I could see doing it. But we don't, and the site doesn't even support that.
We could solve this by using in-game time, but I don't think anyone wants that. Why do you want the PAL times compared with NTSC when they're absolutely, provably not comparable? Who does that benefit?
It's easy to get an NTSC setup if you live in parts of the world that used the NTSC television standard. In parts of the world that used PAL or SECAM it's not so easy, and gets very expensive. If you're running NTSC then the PAL board doesn't affect you a bit, so what's the big deal?
Shouldn't everyone get to run the versions they grew up with?
Also, put up your timing rules. Put up all the rules. Someone should be able to find out how to time their own runs by reading your game's page.
FYI for readers, this discussion has blown up on the LoZ discord, in the #routing and #tloz-discussion channels. I can't transcribe everything said there, over here.
Proposal: We make no up+a into a variable. Collapsing the categories but keeping the distinction. This is something that could be applied to any or every category. We'd probably not want to do it for any% but we could.
No Up+A speed runs of this game are a long-standing tradition, for historical reasons.
However Lackattack24 has proposed that we retain that No Up+A distinction only for the base Any% and Second Quest categories. I agree with the proposal, but I wanted to give notice, and give people a chance to give feedback first.
So please speak up if you oppose this merger.
Thanks,
You shouldn't feel the need to continuously verify runs, no. Letting a run sit all day, to be verified when you have time later in the day, or early the next day, is perfectly reasonable.
You should also scale verification to the importance and the time needed. If you have 3 hour runs submitted daily, then you should set up your verification process not to take 3 hours for every middle of the board submission, or you're going to burn out fast. Moderator burn out is a disaster for the game's community.
It runs at a different speed! So it's not really fair to PAL runners to have them compete with NTSC.
Thanks. Sounds like I picked the right points then.
I request that we add an 'ACE' variable for any%, to allow filtering ACEs from ordinary 'glitched' runs.
When does timing start and stop, frame-wise?
I just 'timed' a run I just made starting from when the name select screen starts to disappear to start, to when Link disappears from the stairs exiting from the boss fight to end. But I don't know if that's how y'all are usually doing it since it's not in the rules. :)
Yup! Probably runs slightly slow but that's just a disadvantage for you. File it under the NES version as platform NES Classic.
I also oppose a board for that, but it shouldn't discourage folks from running it on their own.
Live timing is manual and strictly for show. Whenever the timing is in doubt it's actually timed using the video.
That's a lot of work when we already have forums, Oxknifer.
Also, people who really want comments on their runs can put them on Youtube.
I think using the forums to discuss runs seems like a much better solution for this, than expecting to comment on a specific run directly.
