When I click "reject run" and then navigate away from the page or cancel the rejection, I get a HTTP 500 error. I feel like that should be a 300 error -- you can redirect back to the run you were viewing or back to Runs awaiting verification.
Edit November 2021: Thank you for taking care of this issue!
Interesting idea! A different way to think about it -- how about gathering a ton of cheating videos and starting an archive for it in a Discord? You could then invite mods in to analyze those vids and create a comprehensive list of cheating methods and rating of difficulty to spot cheating in each example. This could end up being a really nice google doc or tutorial video for mods. Sounds like something EZScape would be into, as well.
I guess new mods could be tested on it, but that doesn't sound feasible yet. I'm not sure how many new mods would actively want to test themselves.
"Search for games, users, etc..." suggests that the search bar can search for thing under "etc...", but it can't yet. A new user might assume it could possibly search for series, genres, forum posts, or more.
How about changing it to "Search for series, games, users, and marathons" so we know exactly what the functionality is? Easy fix ^ ^
Applications for joining the team didn't exist a year ago and site development was much slower. I'm glad that @Volvagia has stepped up and I really wish more programmers would join in. Instead of arguing about the lack of programming, how about we come up with a way to incentivize more programmers to join the team? I think a single post by Pac asking for volunteers and outlining experience needed would go a long way. Anyone else have ideas?
I've submitted 30 ideas to this thread. I just counted them up individually (including the idea for personal forum searching lol). After nearly 2 years of doing this, the only idea implemented was fixing a timestamp issue for runs on YouTube. So yeah, it would be nice to have more programmers on the team. Regardless, thanks to everyone who has put in some time to coding this website -- we appreciate your work.
If you scroll back far enough, you'll find the developers do have a sheet with all the ideas that's never been shared publicly, probably because we would annoy them about feature requests all the time. If we do build out our programming team, it would be nice to have something similar to Discord Dream Land so users can decide which features matter: https://tinyurl.com/yd3cefo6
@EmeraldAly Scroll down to "Games added per week" on https://www.speedrun.com/statistics -- they get a lot of requests.
@Treya I've suggested this before: https://www.speedrun.com/The_Site/thread/g79jt/57#7kko1
@Timmiluvs true, that was a stretch. But I was mostly considering IGT for detecting cheating.
@6oliath, thanks for the open-minded response, you pretty much hit the target on everything. Cheers for considering everything I said :D As for the unwise verification shortcut, I think many outside users might see it that way. But mobile and web gamers know just how easy it is to play with or add in a timer, so it's best to teach people the right way the first time. And teaching takes time -- it's not much of a shortcut if you consider the time I put in to ensure players know/can use the resources I've found for them.
@MelonSlice if anything goes wrong, hit the blue tab on the right and give freerice.com some feedback :D
The new interface is here! http://beta.freerice.com
Currently our Discord community is figuring out all the differences between the two versions :)
Hey @Naxed, I'm a mobile and web game moderator that founded the Mobile Speedrunning Discord (nearing on 200 members!). On every game I moderate, you will see something close to this in my rules:
Requirements: "To be verified, your runs should include video with audio, as well as a timer in one corner for accuracy. See the forum for software to record and time your run, as runs recorded with an external video camera will not be verified."
Before anyone throws shade at me (because it always happens) -- video, audio, and timers are all free and very easy to work with on mobile on web. I help every new user learn how to do it correctly the first time and take individual considerations into account. I often encourage users to join my Discord so I can communicate with them directly and work with them until they understand the tools enough to submit a run correctly.
Rule standardization prevents cheating, for multiple reasons:
- All runs are under the same standard, so they are judged fairly under the same criteria.
- Video recordings provide baseline proof and are the greatest deterrent of cheating. I never allow screenshot proof.
- Audio recordings help to detect splicing (joining parts of different videos).
- Timers can be used to detect cheating, but they are more for ensuring accurate timing.
- The external camera ban ensures quality and motivates users to learn how to use easy, free software to record.
If you have any follow-up questions, ask me on the Mobile Speedrunning Discord! https://discord.gg/bpY8zeB
It's a bit disappointing to click on a run that says "Video available" and has the video camera icon next to it, only to see a .jpg.
"Picture available" with a digital camera icon next to it might be more suitable. Coding wise, you could parse for common file extensions and decide if it's a picture or video.
If it's neither a picture or video, it's a link. "Link available" with a link icon would be great for that situation.
I record using Fraps and time with LiveSplit.

If you have a different way of recording and timing, please share!
NOTE: I'm here to help make it easy for you to run this game. If anything is unclear or you need more suggestions on how to get things working, please ask!
It would be nice for mods to be able to duplicate leaderboards or create templates out of them.
I mod https://www.speedrun.com/Jack_Frost, a Nitrome game, and just got mod status on Square Meal, another Nitrome game.
They will have almost the exact same categories, settings, and rules. The only difference will be individual level count. Square Meal has 50 levels and Jack Frost has 40. Still, it would be great to have those 40 levels preloaded by templatizing or duplicating the Jack Frost leaderboard.
Actually, this category used to exist on the leaderboard and was removed because it isn't competitive :)
K we should be careful with the split @MOUTHWEST If I have time this week, I'll do it -- but we'll need to resubmit all the runs currently on the leaderboard with the subcategories
Hey Rubiks! I didn't realize you had some failed runs in there, my bad. I guess I was in a bit of a rush this morning hehe. If you want to submit a run that starts at a certain timestamp, you can add ?t=XmXs to the end of the youtube link to set it at the right position.
Example: (this uses ?t=7s)
I'll change it on your current submission. Thank ya! Also @MOUTHWEST, how do you feel about opening another category for touchscreen?
Check out Cat Bird! It's on mobile, very easy to learn :) www.speedrun.com/cb#Any
Please add a line to the rules as @Sasam has requested. It's courteous to our new and experienced members.
It might also be nice to set up auto-rejection for games that have been previously rejected or are currently pending review. That would be easier on site staff and would keep users waiting less.
Edit April 2020: Thanks for adding game notability to the rules!
