Once you got a capture card, the video game image is sent to your computer. Then you use a broadcast software like OBS to do the streaming from the computer. The broadcast software allows your to stream multiple windows and overlay them, etc. So while you play Xbox, you'll seen your normal game screen, and then on your computer is the timer and game window (and whatever else you put there), but people watching your video will see it however you set it up.

Don't use any capture cards as of now, so couldn't recommend one to you.

@margaretelliott look up on "streaming games with OBS" on youtube.

I don't know the game; what is the likelihood two players would have the exact same score?

discussione: Introductions

I'm a new streamer, so I rarely have a viewer; but just don't think about it. Just think about getting those sweet, sweet WR's.

To accept a new game, or a new run? New game usually takes 1-2 weeks.

Nevermind. It's because the default is "console," you know, in case anyone is actually running MSDOS on a computer instead of with an emulator.

Hey. So, I'm making a list of games I anticipate speedrunning and so forth. One came I am really looking forward to doing is the Jill of the Jungle. When I visit the speedrun.com page for it though, it's a mess.

For clarification:

"Jill of the Jungle is a trilogy of platform computer games released in 1992 by Epic MegaGames. It was intended to rival computer games from other shareware companies such as id Software and Apogee Software. The three episodes in the trilogy are:

Jill of the Jungle Jill Goes Underground Jill Saves the Prince

Though each game was initially released separately, the three were combined into Jill of the Jungle: The Complete Trilogy a year later."

http://www.speedrun.com/jill_of_the_jungle_/full_game

http://www.speedrun.com/jill_of_the_jungle

http://www.speedrun.com/user/DukeNukemFTW

However, in speedrun.com, there's a series called Jill for the Jungle... and under it, just one game. Jill of the Jungle. Within the game, it appears all three games are basically listed within the first game instead of the series. The game is also not marked "The Complete Triology" so it's sort of confusing.

In any case, seeing all of this, I was going to DM the mod and ask if I can clean it up a little bit.. but I noticed something weird.

On the game page, it says all the runs are empty. But on the series page it shows runs for all categories for the game done by the mod, and on the mod profile, it shows the runs as being listed, but again, they are not there on the game page?

I'm just wondering why the runs aren't showing up correctly?

My guess is the cleanest and easiest way to do so is to run the desired twitch stream through VLC player (which is superior quality anyway) and then use window capture on the VLC player.

Ah, on that point, I got WSplit and LiveSplit confused. LiveSplit was what I was referring to when talking about saving and loading layouts and stuff (not really a function in WSplit). @FilmsyGreenberg IMO so far, LiveSplit is far more effective at looking cool; though it does take a good deal of playing around to get exactly what you want.

I remember speedrunning on PC games back in the day, never picked up on it. Much more difficult to get into when I was a kid and we had MSDOS and hoped no one kicked off online because they needed to use the phone.

Came across AGDQ a couple years ago. Could easily kill time by watching that, over most movies and TV series. Had a good friend working on a book about it, and so started talking to him about it more and more often.

I like the meta-game of it. It's a game of games, in a way; and it completely recontextualizes so many games I've played in my life, and give it a vastly different perspective. I don't code games, but looking at some of the older replies, I can relate to being interested in testing the limits of a game engine. Thus, when I got a chance to get a computer necessary to do it, I went ahead and took the opportunity, and began working on games that I played as a kid.

discussione: Speedrunning

Don't mention it. Might want to set your split hot key to something different. I had my on right arrow for a long time because the primary game I play didn't use it at all, and it was in a good spot. When I switched over to play MSDOS games stuff, I had to switch it, and then break the habit of hitting right arrow all the time. Just a head's up if you intend on playing PC games. Of course, none of that matters of games without keyboard usage.

I'm not home right now, but I know in WSplit there is a option somewhere in preferences that essentially allows the hotkey, in your case the spacebar, to press through to WSplit, regardless what window may be on top of it at the moment. When I get home I'll look for it.

I make my own layouts because I use chromakey and need stuff to be particular colors to work. I don't see any reason anyone couldn't load any pre-made layout in WSplit; just not sure where you'd find that.

As far as the automatic stop and start functions in some games; I have no idea how it works. My presumption is that it's coded stuff using screenshots to determining loading screens or something; but how to make them or where to get those things is beyond me. I'm curious to it though so I hope someone else answers your question more accurately than I could.

The easiest solution to this would be to basically use the Windows Mixer to mute out software you don't want noise to get picked up on.

When I was diagnosing audio problems, I'd test setting by recording video and rewatching it, not streaming it online and trying to watch that stream online while streaming online. Ideally, OBS would be able to have a mixer for individual tracks from separate pieces of software, but it doesn't.

However, that wouldn't really allow you to watch your own stream to listen to how the mix sounds live anyways either. If the sounds of a window are open during stream, and you are listening to the stream to test it, you are going to hear the original sound plus it duplicated on the stream. If the sounds of a window are muted during stream, and you are listening to the stream to test it, you wouldn't be testing anything because you've muted the object you are listening for.

AMD Anthlon II X3 445, 3.10 GHz 8 GB RAM Nvidia GEForce GTX 760 (2GB) 256Gb SSD

Refurbished computer $475

And with 1MBS upload speed, I'm surprised I can successfully stream and record 30 FPS, 360p, while running timer, webcam, chat in popout window, and a few OBS plugins. It's barebones; but it works for my main purpose, submitting runs and getting to stream if I want. I play a really old game though on PC, and sometimes can have problems with the graphics card interacting with 20 year old stuff. I haven't tried the NES or N64 emulator yet, but I can't imagine it not working (that would be disappointing).

At the end of the day, it kinda depends on what game you are playing, the quality of the recordings/streams you are wanting, and the number of additional software elements you want running. That's going to determine the sort of baseline equipment you need.

There doesn't currently appear to be that option, though some games internally already do a calculation.

Sounds a cool idea; but it opens a lot of questions. How many variables should be accounted for or allowed? What sort of relationships between variables should be allowed? Determining a weighting system seems like it would be difficult to find and agree upon. For instance, many might have a problem if their speedrun is technically faster that others but has less points. How many "seconds" is a "point" worth? Who decides?

It seems that these sort of things appear to get addressed mostly via categorical restraints. For instance, in your game example, Any% would cover times concerning runs with any number of points, but an additional category premised on the notion of getting at least 1000 points and also getting the best time would be the closet obvious way to simulate something like this.

Of course, that's not really what you are asking for. Ultimately I don't know if such an option could easily be added or if the ultramods would even want to. But it seems, just on first impression, like something that can get really complicated fast.

EDIT. couple typos.

I got added as a mod because I'm the only one who runs a certain game series. As such, I am required to more or less compile all the information, make the rules and categories (which is actually relatively time consuming depending one what all the game requires), and if necessary (in my case it is) likely be the first person responsible for verifying any other runs on the game someone may submit in the future.

Additionally, since I'm the only mod, I would be pretty much responsible for designating other mods for verifying runs, updating or making categories, if anyone were ever want to do so. Since my name is the only Mod for the game, I'd expect I'd be the first to see any submission, and also that people will be DMing me about stuff and I may be required to address concerns and issues runners may be having with a game series.

I'm sure the highly populated games are even more complicated. So ideally, no, I'd rather not have to Mod a game; but as stated above, someone has to do it, especially if no one is doing for a game people are actively submitting runs for.

I'm downloading to save to play when I have the time to later, but I definitely think it looks pretty cool. Not sure I'd run it, but I'll definitely play.

Thanks for the LiveSplit recommendation. LiveSplit really does have the best customization and functionality. I had to play with the colors a little bit to get all good, but the chormokey works well on the pure black background. If anyone else is going for a transluscent timer on their feed, I'd highly recommend LiveSplit if it isn't already being used. Thanks again, Timm, for the recommendation.

I was just curious how long it generally takes to add a new game or game series. I submitted one almost a week ago, but I haven't heard back. Was just wondering if that is pretty standard for previously unlisted games.
