Oh, sorry, I didn't understand your question. Yeah, I think the orni is a bit faster in the floppy version of Dune. Not sure if the cycles have an influence though.
I suppose you fly the orni to find new sietches or villages. You need to have an NPC with you for them to spot the sietch on the ground. And if I remember well, if you click the up arrow too much, the NPC may fail to spot the sietch.
Also remember that most of the time, you can only find a new location if an NPC in a nearby sietch tells you about it (like: "There's a sietch eastwards").
In any case, you never need to click the up arrow at any point in the game. It's just to go a little bit faster. The left and right arrow are sometimes useful to fly over the correct location.
Good luck. Have fun and keep us updated :)
Never tried to find a solution after the bug occured. I always started over. Sorry :/
Hello! Welcome to the very small tribe of Dune speerunners :) I see. Very interesting :) What you're experiencing is in fact the "Gurney Halleck" bug. (I wrote a guide about the game's bugs here : https://www.speedrun.com/dune1992/guide/kyybu ). Explanation: there is a number in the game's memory that indicates your progression in the scenario. Most of the game events set this number to a fixed value, but leaving Gurney in a sietch to train Fremen for the first time increments it. In some cases, it can be incremented beyond the value of the next game event. The event then occurs right away. In your case, the event "leaving Harah home". I never exeprienced this particular occurence of the bug. Very interesting, thank you for this detailed report :) Be careful though, as in precise conditions this bug makes Chani disapear from the game, making you unable to finish it.
For the second bug, it has been a long time since I played the game, but I guess you're missing an event, probably in the palace. Maybe there is a pending message in the communication room, or you forgot to talk to a character in the palace. (or perhaps you need to launch a first attack against the Harkonnen, but that seems unlikely).
Interesting. Thanks for explaining this way of reproducing the bug :)
Also, all the "real time" runs currently online are made on the floppy disk version. The Amiga version may not run at the same pace.
It's great to see a new runner on this game :) Don't hesitate to submit your run, even if you're not fully satisfied with it.
Hi, well, I can't tell for sure if it's a bug or a feature. I guess it's more likely to be a bug. :/ I hope you still enjoy playing the game from time to time :)
That's wierd. Are the Fremen still sick? In the game's scenario, Chani gets kidnapped by the Harkonnen AFTER she heals all the Fremen. If the Fremen are cured (you get a telepathic message), go to the sietch and ask them where Chani is.
Hello, I can't be sure for the Amiga version, because I always play the PC floppy disc version (the one with most bugs). Prospere went to the point where Chani got kidnapped by the Harkonnen. Were you at the same point when you tried that strategy? Or maybe the plants didn't grow enough? Maybe try to wait a bit more? Then again, I can't be sure for the Amiga version, perhaps it just doesn't work.
Given all the information we have now on game technical requirements and DosBox performance, we can now decide that it is reasonable to limit the Dosbox emulation speed at 10000 cycles max. Unfortunately, that cancels your last run.
I'm very interested with your tests in a real hardware. I remember playing Dune on a Pentium I back in the days, and I remember it a little bit slower than 10000 cycles. But hey, it was a long long time ago. Let me know when you have some results.
Oh, my! You're totally right! I got confused by the 12am hour (I never know if it's noon or midnight). I'm so sorry, I decided not to substract the starting time for simplicity reasons, and now it's me who make calculation mistakes. I feel a bit stupid.
Well, sorry for the delay, but you're now officially world champion of Dune speedrunning, category segmented in-game time! :)
For clarification: in-game time is measured by saving outside the Harkonnen palace just before the end of the game. Do NOT substract the starting time. That's for consistency reasons. I retimed Kujgot and Slowham runs (amazing times btw).
My technical problem is not for emulating the game, it's for emulating and streaming at the same time. It's OBS that takes the majority of my computer resources. For more than a year, you ran at 10000 cycles and I didn't know. When I followed suit, and beated your time, you one-sidedly decided to change your settings to 30000. And now, if I understand well, you want to change again. Please understand it's not possible to change all the time. Your source on tasvideos.org also states "Use the largest possible value that you think makes the game run more fluently, but not larger." That's to avoid distorsion. According to this source https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Dune floppy disk game requirements are a 286 processor. That's 6MHz to 20MHz, so it corresponds to 6000 cycles to 20000 cycles in DOSBox. Thus it mustn't be played faster. I say we should keep 10000 cycles max for consistency with the other categories, and because the majority of the runs were made with these settings. In any case your last run at 30000 cycles is above reasonable limits and should be cancelled.
I tried to play at 30000 cycles, but it's a bit too much for my computer, it lags sometimes. I'm a bit frustrated to be disqualified at Dune speedruning just for technical reasons. Moreover, at 30000 cycles the game is way faster than it was in the 90s. It feels different, and that bothers me. We may speedrun games but we shouldn't change the way the game behaves.
I found the cause of the bug eventually. It happens if you meet Liet Kynes before leaving Gurney Hallek in a sietch to train Fremen.
A strange bug happened in my last 3 runs, Chani just disappeard from the game! So I couldn't finish the game or cure the sick Fremen (who happened to be my main troups, of course). I don't get how this bug happens. Does someone have a clue for this?
Created some categories. I also added some rules. You can check if everything is okay with you :)
I agree completely, we should make categories. Apparently we've been named moderators for Dune (I suspect it's because we're the only speedrunners on it :D ) so I don't know if we are supposed to do that ourselves. ??
