Sorry I thought this thread was for leaderboard moderation discussion.

Like the title says. We know people will be eager for their day 1 WRs/PBs but we feel this is the best approach. The release of Curse of the Moon was a disaster as far as leaderboard creation goes. We want to circumvent that this time by giving the game, and the inevitable speedrun, some time to grow.

Many people will be busy through the week of June 23rd through July 1st, the moderators included. The goal is to have the leaderboard go live on the 2nd of July, with us mods working behind the scenes to understand how the leaderboard should be established. Things like IGT vs RTA were a huge point contention with Curse of the Moon, as were glitchless and glitched categories. Two weeks will give the game time to cool off a bit, and let real strategies emerge, instead of let's plays being passed off as WR.

tl;dr go play the game, worry about the leaderboard later

PS. The date of July 2nd makes the assumption that the game will of course, be released on time.

@Daravae You rejected @afnannen136 request for mod because the game has no demand for 2 years, yet there's clearly some demand now. What sense does that make? Maybe I'm not getting something? You've basically told him: "Nah nobody else runs the game, also your runs aren't going to be verified now".

I've been getting into game development myself and right up front I'd say that trying to target a niche audience probably isn't the best idea for a game overall. I understand the appeal, certainly, but what speedrunners want from a game varies greatly.

In-game timers are cool and all, and if they're done correctly, sure, people would probably use that to track time...but they'll also use splits. Thing is, most runners like to split. They don't like to wait through end credits to see if they PB'd or not. Timers are great for IL runs for sure, as it eliminates the use of splits (see Celeste, ge007, etc). My only issue with a visible in-game timer always running, is for the casual player it immediately instills a sense of urgency to beat the levels as fast as possible, which, if you put a lot of effort into your game's environments, art, etc. The person playing the game might not take the time to appreciate such things, just a thought.

It seems you have a good idea of how you want your game to play. Fast paced, fluid, but you seem to be approaching it from a "this is what a speedrunner wants" perspective, which like I stated before, varies from runner to runner. There's no doubt in my mind that someone would want a game like that, but maybe some people want something more tuned back, where they could possibly find their own exploits to speed things up.

Lastly would be no RNG. I get it. Speedrunners hate RNG, so they say. The casual doesn't, in fact they love it, even if they say otherwise. It can add an element of surprise to your game that makes things exciting. I think a good compromise would be making very minor things random. For some speedrunners, just finding ways to manipulate the "randomness" is part of conquering the game. Take that away and it could leave things feeling a bit cold and sterile.

That's just my take. I love the idea and love speedrunning, but catering your game to speedfolk seems like it should come 2nd or even 3rd, with number 1 being "how do I make the best game I can?"

Edit: just realized you've worked on actual well-known projects. Hopefully it didn't come off too "this is how you should do it"

It's certainly not a world record then ;) Hope it works out for you though, I'm going to go professionally make a bomb ass burger, good luck on your facebook referral program.

Honestly, post some runs already. Maybe that FF2 run of yours. It's a world record after all.

As long as you have video evidence, the mod can frame count the run. No timer needed. If they don't know how, or don't want to, get a new mod.

Simply put, if the leaderboard requires a timer (a specific one at that) in your video, then the rules need to be changed.

The first thing that comes to mind is "what's in it for you?" How much of a cut do you take? The fake as hell solo comment on that vid is cute, but I'll ignore it.

Bounties are a very odd thing in speedrunning. They're typically set by other runners, not by viewers. The goal of whatever your site is seems to be to "crowdfund" money to throw at a challenge. Fair enough, but the number of people actually funding it couldn't ever possibly get that high. If it did, and someone beats a challenge, well, is the payout guaranteed? Once again, what's your cut?

There's a much more troublesome issue that occurs with this sort of thing, also. Especially if the money pool actually got large...

What's to stop someone from cheating? People already do it without a financial guarantee (though some do in fact profit) it's never certain. By creating an incentive, what's to stop some nobody from creating an impossible-to-disprove run and taking off with the money?

Ultimately I'd say if you want to support a runner financially on their quest for WR, do it to them directly instead.
