This is like Hoverless in Sunshine. Cut out one mechanic that was put into the game intentionally to let you break platforming sections and explore more freely, but that is never the intended solution except for one Koopa freerunning. It is true that this would be hard to verify
Iirc the route was extremely similar to Any%, and that killed the activity of the category - runners might choose categories differently now though, so if it's active enough it wouldn't surprise me too much if it was readded
One issue that e.g. Coinless (which BeardBear ran) doesn't have is that you never really know if you've accidentally jumped (or if talking to an NPC counted as a jump), and you can't check until the end of the run to reload a save file
- Think of a good way for both runners and verifiers to verify that you didn't miss any
- Run it
- Think of a shorter name
You could do this with the tutorial balloons, as that would remove the multiplayer aspect
This reminds me of the "World" Record speedrun, except you need a jukebox and a specific disk and don't need an anvil. I could see it happening
I'm excited for a 1.16+ subcategory, and for consistency I think we should then also add Pre-1.7 for all 4 woods
That's the one. It is linked on the "Leaderboard histories" sheet
Especially now that the IL board is focussing on Stage RTA, I could see the Bowser levels being the full stage with red coins and the fight, ending on key/grandstar grab
You could end either on Spewart or on Rango, depending on whether you do Wooded or Lake first. I'm not sure which would be faster, though you're likely right with Lake first
Now if you were desperate for categories between Darker Side and 100%, you could run and submit All Hats as a 540 moon category. Probably without duplicate moons, and the category would care more about coins and purples than Darker Side does, while also beating both the Dark and the Darker Side. In contrast to All Outfits, this category would not include any repetitive coin grinding. I had that idea back in 2017 iirc
Collecting 560 moons doesn't seem to be a requirement for the skeleton outfit, only for the metal suit... but if you did need 560 moons, then the category would likely not coin grind for duplicate moons, resulting in 560 unique moons collected...
One question to ask is what makes this category more interesting a category of just 9999 coins (which has been run by Stravos before and is good practice for a massive and harder-to-grasp 100% timesave). Bone% would beat the game and get some extra coins from hint arts here and there, but mostly be pretty similar to Any% after exiting the Dino room
Like in AMNPG, moons locked behind skips would not be required. For AMNPG that's the Snow and Seaside painting moons, for this category it would be the moons inside the Inverted Pyramid; Luncheon Spewart could also be allowed (though not required) since there's no skipless route that avoids him
You can check your pending runs via the hourglass next to the search function. If you have submitted a run that hasn't been verified yet, it should appear there. If it appears there, it definitely didn't get lost.
@OddPandemonium Banning skips would not make the run easier, as the tunnel in Lake, the cave in Moon, and the Klepto fight are quite a bit harder to master than the respective skips. This is moreso to add more variety in categories
Travis ran it and I was a fan of it at first... however it seems to get stale with the amount of downtime involved and the potential inconsistency of load times
We will have to provide a clear definition of what a skip is. Here's my suggestion:
- Accessing areas, moons, or loading zones that are behind an event that is clearly on the intended path to that area
- Events include moons, cutscenes, loading zones, bosses, paintings, pipes, stationary captures such as zippers and chain chomps, switches, and levers
Examples:
- Skipping the Zipper to the tunnel in Lake (which leads to the main area of Lake)
- Skipping the chain chomp and the pipe to the "Atop a High Cliff" moon in Cascade
- Skipping the loading zone to the Moon cave (which leads to the cathedral area of Moon)
- Skipping the frog capture cutscene in Cap
- Using nut clip to skip the lever at the tunnel in Wooded
You ARE allowed to end cutscenes early by pressing "Skip", but you're not allowed to bypass them entirely if you access things behind them
There are barely any timesaves from glitches in the Any% speedrun. The 1.3 update (which made the game faster than the more glitchable 1.0 version) removed Sphynx Clip, First Moon Skip, and Turnip Clip from the game. Currently, glitches are probably saving around 30 seconds in the whole run, which doesn't warrant its own category (this is assuming that Moon Cave Skip is not considered a glitch). You could grind all the way to subhour without ever using glitches.
However, there is a speedrun category of World Peace that bans all sequence breaks in the kingdoms' story, and thus effectively provides a run without major glitches. It is called "All Story Moons". You can run All Story Moons competitively without ever using glitches.
An idea, since you brought up the Moon Cave, could be "All Bosses No Postgame", where you have to beat all explicit bossfights and also kill Klepto. It would also come closer to "Glitchless" than World Peace does. Maybe if several runs of that are performed, it could become a consideration
Which takes a lot longer than looking up Saria's guide. Please add a guide equal or better to the one that was removed.
Also note that unlike All Signs, the star-centered category extensions are mostly combinations of different stars, so any normal guides for those stars (70 star guides, 120 star guides, the Usamune spreadsheet) still apply. This leaves hardly more than the route for the specific 31, 50, 90, 45, 15, all red coin, and 16 star no LBLJ guides. Categories where a star route will not be a sufficient guide include:
- All Signs
- All Coins
- All Blue Coins
- 1000 Coins
- 500 Coins no main stages
- 100 unique lives
- 16/70 star Blindfolded
- Mario cam 16/70/120 star
- Nonstop 16/70/120/90/45 star
- 50 cap star
- 70 star CCC
