I'm not sure, but I don't think that the switch pro controller is fully compatible with pj64.
do you have any XBOX or PS4/5 controllers laying around that you can connect via USB? that's what I used to use before I got a refurbished n64 controller and an adapter, and it worked absolutely fine. same layout(generally, although you do have pressure-sensitive triggers, not button triggers like on the switch, although I think you can mod an Xbox/ps4/5 controller to have the same button style triggers as the nsp), better analogue input honestly, and probably most important of all, more compatibility.
Retroarch adds a performance increase and is considered unfair. mupen64 is for tasing, and mupen64 plus is harder to set up, and even more clunky in my experience compared with project 64.
honestly, the mods probably should look into more emulators like bizhawk, mupen64++, and others. yes, bizhawk is used primarily for LOTADs, but it's actually more accurate than the supported emulators. as for mupen64++, I can't remember if it's android only, but I find that it's the most accurate, assuming your device is powerful enough to run it.
I agree with Kulty. it just has so many issues, even more than the wii u vc, it'll probably be in the same boat as the ports. seperate games on speedrun.com, or maybe it won't even be a speedrun game.
the video glitches, while VERY rare, they happen. the input delay makes it almost impossible to speedrun properly, and it's just not a very good version of the game.
so in all, no. it is 99% likely that it will not be a platform.
well, first off, USB controllers are known to have MANY issues. the joystick will often be uncalibrated with no easy way to recalibrate it without taking it apart, the USB is finicky and known to one day, work fine. the next, give a constant "the last USB device was not recognized" in windows, and just straight up won't even connect in Linux or macOS, the L and R buttons fail, the Z button sometimes will just randomly reverse the way it sits, and there is seemingly no way to hook it back on, things like that.
because of the reasons listed above, they are generally frowned upon. but if you want to take the risk, then just map it like any normal controller in pj64, or if you're on Linux or macOS, just find the keycodes, and put them into the script.
now, what would I suggest? get a refurbished OG n64 controller or a brawler64 and something like the Hyperkin adapter. that will run you 40$ for all of that. DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT GET THE KNOCKOFFS.
They may seem cheep-cheep from the start, but use them for a couple of days, and they start to have similar problems listed above. Especially with Hyperkin stuff. those are made real cheap, and that's the brand (every n64 controller that they have including their USB ones) that had the Z button problem. so beware.
if you have any more questions, let me know :)
@SavirTheSpeedrunner thanks! that's really appreciated!
hmm... I'd say that it would save around 20 sec, but that's if you do it really fast, like WR fast.
it could save a good bit though. have you tried to learn the advanced route that the top 10 use? that's what I'm learning rn, and it should save a hell of a lot more time.
this only started happening, but pj64 is not working properly. the audio is playing, but no video. whenever I open it up in a window capture on OBS though, it shows a white screen with nothing on it. I tried deleting all of the files and re downloading them from the resources page, but unfortunately no dice. I tried changing the video plugin, nothing. can someone tell me how to fix it? I've tried everything I know. I may just get a cheap capture card and run on Linux if I have more problems. I'm tired of trying to get this thing to work.
it should, but I'm not sure. what's your PB without it? there's no way to tell without knowing your PB.
gotcha. alright thanks roopert. I'll just get an OG NES from eBay then.
I do have a question about flash carts though, which one would you recommend for a budget flash cart? one of the everdrives? maybe a different one?
hmm... idk then. I know in sm64, flash carts are not allowed, so that's what I was basing my statement on.
as for the snes through sd2snes, I don't know, I wasn't aware that flash carts were allowed in any game, but I would guess that it would be okay? as long as it doesn't increase performance(aka reduce lag in a noticable way) then it shouldn't be a problem.
I am having endless issues with project 64, and I want to switch to mupen64 plus. is it allowed? I saw on the leaderboards that it's allowed, but I think only on linux.
also, I have a modded wii with mupen64 plus on it. will I be able to use it? the video signal is composite so it will look like it's on console, and atm, this runs the best for me. it's very accurate emulation, kinda accurate lag, and whatnot.
@SavirTheSpeedrunner no. that is a flash cart. flash carts are not allowed for various reasons. most notable, the use of save states.
It still doesn't make much sense though, the retron is a scaled down nes in a cheaper housing. right? that's all it is? why wouldn't it be allowed? the controllers are the same, (I use official ones), and the internals may be cheaper, but it's the same exact thing as an original nes, so why wouldn't it be allowed?
ah, alright thanks. would you mind telling me why? it doesn't make much sense to me.
hi! I come from sm64 speedruns. there are no n64 clones out there yet, so this is kinda unknown to me. if I got a Hyperkin retron1 AV, would I be able to use it in runs, or do I have to get an actual unit?
interesting.. well, we'll see. maybe it'll be a thing.
hm... welp nvm. sorry! they can contact the mods though, right?
you can request to add categories. either contact the mods, or fill out the form in this guide
