@LA-Volpe

Great tips. Also, finally, I understand why people can slide in midair! After all these months! I could not for the life of me understand how people do it up until now. Thanks for that lol.

My debugging rule of thumb is that if the bug doesn't hinder casual play, can only be found by abusing the engine, and is beneficial to speedrunners - I'm gonna keep it. So until it's proven that this bug softlocks the game or frustrates people just playing to the end, feel free to abuse it

Ayy nice first run. I gave a few tips and tricks regarding the underlying gameplay systems in the forums if you want to improve upon it :)

great run, nice job landing on the comms tower. sorry about breaking your hands

My hot take is that I think that the route strategy IS complete. It's now up to a perfect performance. By that I mean, UNLESS someone comes up with a brilliant new skip none of us thought about I genuinely think this is probably the most optimal path for glitchless*. Great job

  • In the first bar area (0:34) I usually go for the right wallrun because it's closer to the exit vent but to each their own

Ayy very smooth run Nice job finding and pulling off the skillful paths @ 0:32 and @ 1:14

It's a good run no doubt but I'd like to ask for a re-categorization Phasing through the pipe @ 0:24 and the office glass @ 1:23 are definitely glitches

IsraelDancingEngie2 years ago

So uh Imma need a full explanation about how to pull that glitch off I'm probably not going to patch it out. I'm just interested because what the fuck

I don't know if it's against the speedrun rules, but I wonder if you tried running the game with reduced camera animations on? It's mostly used to disable rolling, which obscures your vision somewhat. Could help with falling into that pesky vent.

As for that little hiccup at 1:20 - the stairway jump is technically a physics glitch and as such has a tendency to mess up. Make sure you're right in the center of the stairway, looking forward.

After a few tries I beat current WB and my own PB. A sub 2:30 run is def possible

So this post is about giving y'all hints about how the movement system works so you can abuse it for your own runs. This is not a complete list (see point #5) and there are probably more exploits I haven't discovered myself.

  1. CLIMBING IS YOUR ENEMY. The game will lock you into a canned animation which will stall your momentum. Vaulting will retain your momentum (added in the v1.0.1 patch), but from my testing it's still slower than just running forward. 1.1 It is possible, with enough training, to reliably jump over waist-high obstructions when running. It's not pixel/frame perfect but it's very close to it. It's hard to describe how to pull it off but it's basically up to intuition and understanding the game's physics.

  2. Conversely, WALLRUNNING IS YOUR FRIEND. Wallrunning has zero friction and grants you a massive speed boost when you first latch unto a wall. It is possible to pull a perfect wallrun reliably every time - if you're familiar with the original Mirror's Edge, it's basically the same mechanic.

  3. SLIDING. Sliding immediately doubles your speed, then over the course of about half a second, reduces it down to zero. By carefully exploiting this system you can effectively spam your way into short speed boosts.

  4. STAIRCASES. Harkening back to Mirror's Edge, spamming jump + forward on staircases will give you a nice speedboost at the cost of limited strafing.

  5. There are explicit hidden paths created for speedrunners in some set-pieces but I'll let you figure them out. I will hint that it is possible, though hard, to land right on top of the fallen comms tower in the final set-piece. It can be done reliably, and is slightly easier in the v1.0.2 patch.

Good luck mates! Hope you have fun.

Just as a little fun fact, I made 1TIM as a very condensed puzzle/shooter with the intention of making it "speedrunable" - it's short, it's fast, get you in get you out.

Due to confused marketing and me getting overexcited about the subject matter rather than explaining what the hell the GAME is about, this didn't really come through. I'm still glad this is happening a few years later, even if it's one person.

As 8 months have gone by, I think this post has lost its relevancy, but I'd still like to pitch in: this sounds like a good idea should STAR_fox add it, though with the 2020 update, I dunno about including the Cut Ending. It has no actual mechanics and you should just be holding TAB the whole time. There aren't any strats there, so maybe the category should be "all original endings"?

The internet is a surpring place, and I never thought anyone would want to speedrun my visual novel first person bullshit thing, it's kinda flattering actually. Thanks a bunch.
