Hey I want to start some speedrunning. I am looking for a category where no heirlooms, buff potions, toys or stuff like that is allowed. What do I have to choose? New Game, Any Expansion? or what?
hmm 10-50, or 1-60, 1-50
i want to be allowed to only use what i get from the run. drops, quests loot. and only buffs that the class can put on themself
1-10 no heirlooms is something like that. You are allowed to use toys in that, but they don't affect the run in any way
They are expensive though. I am looking for a category basically new game and no nothing, just loot that you get from the run. no preparation required.
Without a clear cut "ironman" mode, there's no great way to keep things to a self-buffed run. This would mean if, at any point in a run you receive a buff that helps in any way, it becomes null and void. Imagine you have a route that takes you through Goldshire, and some random dude is just buffing everybody for fun. Your run, no matter how strict you were following the rules up to that point, it becomes invalid. There's no meaningful way to enforce self-buffs either, because what happens when a character has a limited time xp boost item like from Christmas events? Are they allowed to use that item if it is mailed to them? If we say no, then what about the Draenor xp potions? Theoretically that would be ok, but do you allow other people to scout supply drops for you and have you world hop so you can afford a large amount of xp potions? It's a very tricky area to nail down hard rules on.
My suggestion is if you want to speedrun a self-buff category, go for it! Make a video, get some other people interested, and if there's enough support for that kind of run, there's no reason it can't be added. There is a 1-20 no heirlooms category I haven't seen get a lot of love, and I personally haven't been playing wow for about 2 years, but I assume you can find a good, clear cut end goal that fits within a time span you want to run. 1-20 used to be "Time stops when the player is able to ride a normal speed mount", and 1-10 was based on unlocking the talent tree. So find a category that already fits your idea for a run, add on your extra restriction, and if it's a fun and enjoyable run, it'll take off. If not, you still were able to have your fun, and you'll have a unique video to host on youtube.
Hi all,
I am happy to report that the archive project is just about complete! You are now able to see runs that used to live on on the following leaderboards
