Fuel Sources - sorted by importance for speedrunning

#Introduction

There are a few ways to collect Fuel during your run. Some are faster, some are slower. This means every time you try to find Fuel you have to gauge if the time loss is worth the amount of Fuel you will collect, especially if it could be 0.

Whenever you don't immediately jump to the next system but collect Fuel instead you essentially waste precious time, so this means an important trick is to collect Fuel while your jump is still charging up. Everything you do in the few seconds between the point you entered the system and the point you can leave it again doesn't use additional time, so use those seconds to fly to Service Stations, shoot down any ships closeby etc.

There are 8 ways to gain Fuel in this game.

#Service Stations

These are your main source of Fuel. Even if you only have like 300 credits, you can buy some Fuel there. On top of that, you can shoot the yellow-glowing containers around the station for some additional Fuel! Make sure to check the hidden Fuel tanks that are sandwhiched between other parts of the station as well. Only shoot glowing tanks though to not make G&B hostile too soon, and don't forget that shooting G&B tanks will make G&B hostile immediately.

#Enemy ships

These will often drop Fuel - sometimes it's 2 Fuel, sometimes it's 16 Fuel. If you see some Okkar, G&B or Outlaws immediately after you enter a system, try to kill them and see if they have Fuel. Sometimes you can do that before your next jump is even ready, which means you used your downtime in the best possible way - to collect Fuel.

#G&B Fuel tanks

Even regular stations sometimes have 1-3 Fuel tanks. They glow yellow as well, but there are rarely more than a few per station. Fly in, shoot them from close to collect the Fuel faster, get out.

#Outlaw Fuel tanks

Sometimes Outlaw stations have Fuel containers on them. Just like all the other containers they don't give much Fuel, but combined with enemy ships closeby you can sometimes get some nice amounts of Fuel there. Make sure to check Outlaw stations with jump suppressors for Fuel tanks while you're there. Don't forget the loot containers either, but more on that later.

#G&B Fuel freighters

Sadly they usually only contain like 5-20 Fuel, but because they move so slow and are so easy to plunder with the AW, you will get some Fuel for almost zero effort here.

#Freighter Wrecks

Often accompanied by mine fields, the glowing freighter boxes sometimes contain Fuel. If a wreck is close, it may be worth the trip. Don't take any long detours to them though.

#Loot Containers

These small little boxes that drift around the system can contain Fuel as well, but that's rare. Stay away from single containers as they're hard to hit from a mile away and are generally not worth the effort. But if you happen to run into a container near a jump suppressor or on a service station, make sure to check them for Fuel. Shooting G&B containers will make it impossible to buy Fuel anymore though, so make sure to do that first.

#Abandoned Fuel tanks

Some bigger asteroids have metallic frames in and around them - if you get lucky, you might find a Fuel tank here and there. As these are pretty rare and usually in dark places that are hard to spot, you don't want to spend too much time hunting them down.

#Final thoughts

The most important rule in collecting Fuel is simple.

Don't be shy to shoot G&B stuff.

Fuel up, Adams & Evas!
