RNG is really the biggest peeve I have with speedrunning (especially games where you can't really manipulate the RNG to your favor).

Welcome to the community, RetroGamer!! I wish you the best of luck on your runs!

What that does is gives you the option to include your personal splits that you did for that run (a good example would be watching speedruns on Twitch. The splits are the time that it takes to complete a certain section/part of that particular game. The splits all add together to give you your full time (or you can just time it starting from the beginning, and stopping at the end. Splits are chiefly there to (a) compare your best time in a certain area of a game to times submitted by other people for that section, or (b) to try to get you to attempt to beat that time, so you can get a sweet new record in that particular area). One good example is "New Super Mario Bros Wii". We split after every level, so while we have the overall time at the end, we also have the time that it took for us to beat each individual level.

Submitting your splits is optional, but if you don't submit with video proof, it is preferred in a lot of communities that you at least have splits (you can download LiveSplit, which can help you get the individual splits all set up).

I hope that helped explain your question. :)

Welcome to the community, Piliener! I wish you the best of luck on your runs!!

As JayJane said, having a spreadsheet and/or notes definitely help, and having a walkthrough nearby definitely helps. Another thing I highly recommend is watching the WR of that category. It's currently held by DriftingSkies, but I can't seem to find the run online, so searching for it online might help. Another thing to do is ask for advice from the other runners in the forums. :)

I find that in many of the runs (including the WR), you start after you select the file (like the rules said), but AFTER you've met E. Gadd, and not at the very beginning of the game. Is there a reason for this? And am I supposed to start after I meet E. Gadd? (Sorry. I just was confused by this).

Ah, I was also wondering that, cause I was contemplating on submitting Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (along with one possible other) http://www.speedrun.com/dr2 (ignore my horrible time on the leaderboard, haha. I've beaten the game almost an hour faster, but I wasn't recording/streaming, and the one time that I did...I kind of sucked. xD)

Welcome to the community, JanYanSan!! I wish you the best of luck on your runs!! :)

One good way to learn the "ins and outs of speedrunning" as you put it, is to look at runs and guides for the game(s) that you're wanting to speedrun (which, in your case, is "Pokemon Yellow"). You can check out the "Pokemon Yellow" leaderboard here: http://www.speedrun.com/pkmnyellow I also highly recommend watching the world record run for that game, since it uses some of the most updated strats, which can help you get through the game even faster. The current world record for Any% Glitchless (which is probably the category that's ran the most) is currently held by Gunnermaniac3, and you can watch their run here: And lastly, I highly recommend looking through the guides and forums of the game. The guides, well, guide you through the game, and help show you the best strats on how to save those precious seconds. (Here's the link to the guides: http://www.speedrun.com/pkmnyellow/guides), and you can look in the forums for other tips that other runners have posted, as well as ask questions that the other runners can help you with (here's the link to the forum: http://www.speedrun.com/pkmnyellow/forum).

Once again, I wish you the best of luck!! :)

Sounds good. I will very likely end up submitting a run, then. Thank you for answering my questions! :)

All right. I have one other question (if you don't mind). Is there a time limit on how long each individual run should be? (as in, do you not want a run to go over X amount of hours)

Will this run be taking place online, or do we all have to meet up? It wasn't mentioned in the other forums.

Yes, I believe that Dolphin is allowed for "Mario Kart Wii". (It's not an ISO, so it's allowed unless the rule was changed)
