I guess that kinda makes sense, but it’s also incredibly skewed towards popular games. If you have a run that’s better than 100 people in a game with 400 runs, is that a better score than you having first place in a game with 50 runs? Since any kind of scoring and ranking like this is heavily subjective I’m not sure a system like this makes any sense to have.

You’re better off going to the game page and looking at the most popular games to see who’s got good times in them although you’re gonna see very little cross over between popular games, it doesn’t happen very often.

Requiring a runner to manually remove loads from their submission is asinine, don’t ever require that. Manually removing 60 load screens in this case is just not something you can ask of a runner, especially because it opens up room for significant error if someone isn’t very precise and if the loads aren’t removed the exact same way.

Only ever remove loads if there is any autospliter for your game (which 99% of the time exists for PC games only). For PSP games, check out how some other LBs are set up regarding emulator. If emulator saves a bunch of time in loading, creating sub categories for console and emulator might be a good option.

I would recommend Llanfair for the browser version of LibeSplit called LiveSplitOne as those are the most popular Mac timers. Idk what that program is you downloaded so I have no input on that.

AntarcticaTimmiluvs6 years ago

Hmm? If you’ve set up your segments in LiveSplit or its equivalent, they’ll be blank until you do your first run. They don’t fill in until you complete a run and actually split for each segment.

 1. No video of you performing the glitch makes this incredibly questionable.

 2. Not sure how you’d shave an hour off a 41 minute WR unless you’re talking about 108%.

 3. I really don’t understand why you’re sharing this with us instead of the Crash community through their forums, discord, etc.

This will sound stupid, but something that can lose you like a minute or more on menus is not using the “Start” trick to exit them.

A lot of people, especially newer runners, don’t know that when in a menu you can press “start” to instantly close the pause menu. You’d be surprised how much time that saves over pressing the back button (circle on English, X on JP) to back out of each menu screen one at a time.

Some people know this from casually playing, but I always mention it because I never learned about it until doing runs and seeing other people do it. And I’ve seen a number of new runners over the years not know about it either.

Without actually seeing a run of yours, I don’t think it’s possible to give any advice or help. We won’t know what you do wrong or what you’re doing unoptimally unless we can see it. Otherwise we’re taking shots in the dark and hoping we can hit something. I encourage you to submit your runs or at least upload them somewhere so we can sss them and provide any advice we can. Until then, the best advice is to watch a few high level runs and just do what they do - if you struggle with any strats then we can help in those specific cases. The biggest time losses I tend to see are sloppy movement, slow menus and various boss fights going slow.

As for Simba, it sounds like you’re summoning him late or slowly. As long as Simba is summoned quickly, the heartless should never be close to hitting you. For World Terminus, a safer strat is do release the roar on 3 flashes instead of 2 which will stun the enemies instead of resetting their animations. For final rest, idk what the problem is without seeing it. Just make sure you mash out the summon to get it out quickly. In final rest you can use stop on the last invisible before killing it to buy yourself a little setup time if you’re worried about getting Simba out in time.

As I recommend to everyone, join our discord which is stickied in the main forums and is linked on the side of the games/series. More people can provide insights there as opposed to here.

Wii would be allowed as well, although I think Wii VC is slower for SNES games (I’m not entirely sure). Also, no reason to need to buy a SFC, you can easily region mod a SNES to play SFC games by removing the plastic tabs in the cartridge slot. It’s incredibly simple to do and you can probably find a SNES cheaper than an SFC.
Yeah, backwards compatibility is a feature the console makers included on purpose so it is not emulation.
Not entirely true. Some models of PS3 for example were backwards compatible through software emulation within the system itself. So, technically speaking (and me nitpicking on details), it is emulation, but it’s official emulation similar to the Wii VC. In those cases the point still stands that it’s not listed as “emulator” for LB purposes. That’s reserved to 3rd party software for playing games on a computer - like everyone else has been saying, official emulation and backwards compatibility are just listed as that console itself, not emulator.

I frame count my runs with Avidemux 2.6. I use it to see how many frames long my run was and then I simply divide that count by my capture FPS of 29.97 to get the time of my run in seconds.

Uhh the 2 communities just work together. Sometimes someone finds a glitch and then someone will just attempt to TAS it to see if it can be replicated as well as if a setup can be found. The 2 communities often share people, it’s not like the TAS community for games and the speedrunning community are distinct entities, people move between both frequently. The only distinct things about them is how they do their runs.

Most TASes aren’t done by trial and error on inputs like you described. Sockfolder has a bot that famously tried as many permutations of movement as it could to try and find a setup, but that’s not common in TASing. Most TASes focus on what can be manipulated - a lot of the movement and actions being done on certain frames is being done that way to manipulate something else. Optimal movement comes a little secondary to that as you go frame by frame.

While technically no harm aside from annoyance, it’s just good forum etiquette to not revive dead threads, even for harmless posting. It’s not an explicit rule anywhere (it’s more of an “unwritten” one), so you can keep doing it, but be prepared for annoyed people every time.

Without getting a 3DS capture card (which will cost a few hundred dollars) the only other way to record footage of a 3DS is to point a camera at the console while you play. As long as it’s clear enough and you can hear the game, it should be fine.

Secondary to that is how to setup a stream to Twitch or another service, but that’s better learned from online tutorials as there’s a lot involved with it and describing it here would take quite some time. The general gist is that you need broadcasting software like OBS where you can build your layout. After that you just connect it to your Twitch account so you can stream.

Threads that haven’t had responses in months are considered dead. 2 months, 4 months, whatever. If nobody has responded in that long then the thread is probably dead.

If nobody responded in the first place that’s a little different since that person might still want help or an answer, but if replies were given, then I wouldn’t bother since I doubt the OP would check old threads.

Granted, this one isn’t super old, but the other ones you necro’d in Talk were dead for 9 months so bumping those is pointless.

Certain games have certain allowed emulators, always check the rules and with the game mods before assuming an emulator is good to use for runs.

The discord for this game will also be a great resource for you so I’d recommend joining it if you haven’t already (questions can be answered faster there than here, especially once you start learning)

The answer to your first question is practice. Getting a top time in this game takes a ton of work, there’s a lot of optimizations that can be made. Asking questions when stuck can be good, but generally speaking I’d go after a tutorial or watch some runs and start learning on your own first. After a few runs you’ll know what you really need help with.

The answer to your second question is The Internet. Amazon, EBay, etc, they’re all places you can get a SNES and JP ALTTP. Just make sure to a JP 1.0 cart (ask to see the back of it and look for a punch code with no letters). And made sure to remove the plastic tabs from your SNES’s cartridge slot so the JP cart fits.
