After being suggested to start one for revenge of shinobi, I decided to make a discord for the entire series aside from PS2 Shinobi and Nightshade since they have one already. Here's the link:

The timing rules aren't specified in either the rules tab or its provided link. We should probably get that looked after.

If you're going to test mods with a cheated run, you do it like the guy who made this video. That's the classy/respectful way to do it.

When one has a concern about how a leaderboard is ran or concerns about a specific run, you have to speak up, you have to bring it to the attention of the game's community AND its leadership right from the start.

Pulling a stunt like what LoanSharkJoe did is not the answer and no matter what excuses he will say to justify his actions, he still failed to communicate with the community on these issues he quite clearly had over how the leaderboard was ran prior to when the video was made.

I of course am saying all this under the assumption that he actually cares about the integrity of the leaderboard.

Regardless, he needs to go to great lengths to build back trust with this community after the actions he's committed (and let's be honest here, it's probably going to take more than that now with his most recent jab at another member in the community). Otherwise, it's time for him and his followers to move on

Alright someone else who knows you better than I do was able to confirm that you use windows so that should be that. Time to find the run again and verify it for real. I'm closing this thread.

British Columbia, CanadaShadax6 years ago

I can not fulfill that request as I have not been around long enough to know of any past cheating on the game itself past 2 years ago. That is a question best left for one of the other mods to answer if they know the answer. Regardless even if there is no such incident on record, I don't think that should be reason enough to consider having the rule removed.

Also being that I wasn't the one who injected the rule I can only assume it was put into place after the case involving McBobX in the NES Little Mermaid community.

Which makes sense being that both Little Mermaid and AitMK were made by Capcom, both feature Disney properties, both are NES games, both leaderboards' primary super mod is the same person (Dugongue), and apparently (according to the new Discord link) both are being tied together as one whole community.

Do rest assured that the verification process is not singling out emu runners. One of the console submissions for instance was played on an HD modded NES for instance. He too had to be confronted with some questions on the submission before I could properly verify. And I also don't verify console runs recorded via a webcam pointing at the TV. So the pendulum swings both ways. Remember you're talking to a console runner here who no longer submits runs for a game unless I can provide both the livestreamed run AND the local recording of the exact same run. Yes...the standards for my own submissions are even higher than yours.

Sure cheaters will always try to cheat and I do understand where you are coming from but a change to the rule will require the community's voice on the matter regardless and that includes Dugongue. You are free to join the discord (right under the guides tab on the left side) and make your case there so that we as a community can talk this over and maybe come to a decision.

Anyways, after some investigating the main site of nestopia ( http://nestopia.sourceforge.net/ ) the conclusion I'm coming to here is you're using version 1.40 (the latest version and a version that hasn't been updated since 2008) or you run your emulator on a MAC or Linux.

British Columbia, CanadaShadax6 years ago

To answer your question. Concerns about emulator runs have been brought up recently in other communities. Here is one such example:

https://www.speedrun.com/littlemermaidnes/thread/4h5ds

As you can see, the belief is that emulator runs should be held to a higher standard due to how much easier it is to get away with cheating as opposed to console (especially with the knowledge we have today).

By at least giving us the basic information (name of emulator and version) we as mods can at least determine that the runner did/didn't have the tools to potentially create a fake run. Sure I could just verify the run and ignore the rule for your submission, but if someone accuses you of cheating in that run, there is little I or the other mods can do to help your situation without the necessary information. This is another reason why I support the current ruling for emulator runs.

It's an annoying rule for all emulator runners I'm sure and I'm almost positive you won't be the last person to complain about it, but it is the best compromise we can come up with to ensure integrity is maintained to the leaderboard.

I do hear Nestopia is a perfectly legal emulator though so that should suffice. As for the lack of version I'm going to ask some runners who also use Nestopia if they have the same issue you do. For now, your run will remain TBD. I may require another mod's approval on this depending on what I'm told so sit tight.

I got the perfect game to submit here but being that it is only one and a half to two hours long I have to wait until Oct 1 to submit.

So I've decided to remove NMG/Glitchless altogether and all of its nuiances of rules and simply just make the SNES and Genesis versions there own categories of Any% and 100% as they have enough differences from each other to warrant the change IMO.

As of now, all difficulties of the Genesis version will share the same leaderboard for the time being though this may be subject to change.

I've also removed the co-op category altogether as well. If 2 runners wish to submit a co-op run of this game that properly completes, please contact me either on twitter or this thread so I can add the category.

Also tested out Free Shot w/ Flame/Chaser and got this result:

For Lightsaber users, switching Laser to Force for Force/Flame combo should suffice as long as you follow it up by positioning yourself correctly to properly manipulate his pattern. Admittedly, it's a bit of a gamble as I'm sure at times he may decide to punch you before the gems come to him.

bigblue's expert run has a really good spot to stand right from the start and it manipulates Golden Silver's pattern for the most part. Perhaps if he was a few frames further left he could've even prevented getting grabbed in that fight.

With Fixed Shot + Flame/Chaser and bigblue's setup, Golden Silver gets destroyed on Easy as I demonstrate here:

Damn! Nice find!

Once I figure out how to do that I should see about the other difficulties and see if that trick works there too.

"So I have been watching the various speedruns people have been doing and I feel like this game can be done in under 30 mins. I'll be trying a few things that may help speed up certain parts but just with my practice I have gotten under the current record for easy mode through 2 stages."

Around the time I got that 31:02 run, DukeNukemFTW actually tweeted to me about the hopeful possibility of me pushing sub-30. So the idea of it being possible was always there, the main issue is the motivation for me to just get the grind on and do it as i know alot of potentiaI time can be shaved off throughout the 31:02.

Still have yet to have a low 4 minute segment of Dice Palace on all my attempts on easy (4:33.75 for a Dice Palace gold split is BAD) and between Pink, Orange and Green stages I can still be a combined almost 12 seconds faster based off my sum of best. Stage 5 in the record run is actually pretty bad as well (16 seconds left off the table there) and I miss the quick kill strat on the final Green fight as well. Lots of exploitable weaknesses there.

Once I've achieved a Mega Turrican run I'm happy with (sub-15 at least), I will attempt to challenge the 31:02 again and push for that coveted sub-30 finally.

"Also why do you all use fire+follow? I find Laser+follow to be a better combination as you can start getting hits quicker on certain bosses."

Flame/Chaser gives me the flexibility to handle bosses both close and afar without the worry of the weapon itself betraying me.

I'm open to the idea of a different weapon combo with better potential but I will have to chime in on my personal experiences here with Laser/Chaser and my biggest issue with it is Control. Flame/Chaser not only does crazy damage but you have full control of it allowing you to do pretty close to optimal damage even from far distances which comes in handy against fights that are difficult to handle in close range without losing time which became a problem for me to overcome with the Lightsaber.

The thing is that, much like other combinations of Chaser (aside from Flame), you have have the issue of your weapon targeting non-threatening enemies chasing behind you over enemies coming at you just because they don't appear on screen fast enough. This is lethal especially when dealing with enemies that can grab you. It's also frustrating when it wonders off to kill some unimportant enemies when a phantom that needs to be killed shows up.

Damage is also an issue especially with regards to the phantoms that you're required to kill to advance the level as their I-frames are triggered based on number of hits with the weapon as opposed to the amount of damage you do to them which screws over weapons that don't do the full weapon damage as JimSR mentions. Thankfully Phantom quick kills are a thing in the level where you have to save Yellow (Stage 5).

Finally, there's the throwing glitch which currently to my knowledge only works with Flame/Chaser. This however still needs to be tested further with other weapon combinations yet which is something I can work towards whenever I feel ready to make a return to this game.

Now that being said though, I want to make it clear, that if it works for you and you see the potential in Laser/Chaser to push sub-30, then go for it. It is always a good thing to challenge the status quo by trying something different. That's how new strats and routes are found.

"I use Fire/Laser (Lightsaber) rather than Laser/Chaser because Laser/Chaser doesn't do full damage (I think there are 3 weapon combinations that do full damage) but Fire/Chaser lets you skip a train (first train appearance) cycle on Green's level and Lightsaber doesn't, I don't know if you're able to do that with Laser/Chaser."

Assuming I actually know what part you're talking about here, you actually can achieve the same train cycle skip with Laser/Flame. You just have to switch out laser and kill the 3rd guy that wonders off screen with flame solely as the range is just far enough to do so. When I get back to doing full attempts on Easy again you'll see me take advantage of that to full effect. Laser/Chaser might be able pull this off as well assuming no enemies are on screen.

"SO I have been trying to see if there is a way to manipulate the Die for the board game room and I think I have figured out something about the die. The more times you throw it in the air the higher the chance of getting the number that it first lands on. I threw the die 3 times before getting my roll number 50 times and got the same number on the die 50% of the time. Then I threw the die into the air 8 times and found that my odds of getting the same number as when the die landed increased to 66%. I will need to run a few more trials. I want to get to 100 samples of 3 and 8 throws. But if things stay consistent then there may be a way to manipulate the die so it will give you the same number every time. I'll get back with my findings in a few days once I run it a few more times."

A way to manipulate the dice would be a god send especially for newer runners that might be intimidated by the horrid luck factor that is involved with Dice Palace.

Currently, the ideal Dice Palace is 7 rolls with 3 of them landing on the "Happy Item" spaces. My 33:39 normal mode run managed to achieve this despite some horrible execution errors in that level.

In that run, Dice Palace went like this:

Turn 1: Roll 2 to land on Happy Item Turn 2: Roll 2 to land on Rush N' Go Turn 3: Roll 3 to land on Destroy! Turn 4: Roll 3 to land on Happy Item Turn 5: Roll 3 to land on Curry and Rice Turn 6: Roll 3 to land on Happy Item Turn 7: Roll 2 to land on Boss

If the goal is to manipulate for consecutive rolls of "3" all the way to the Boss space the time to begin that manipulation is Turn 3 as doing it on Turn 2 potentially leads to landing on "The Way Back" space.

I still see top runners opting to save the frames and let fate decide the outcome of this level but the run hasn't gotten to that point of optimization just yet so I feel looking into this is very much worth it.

I know you posted this months ago but if you're still looking into it be sure to let us know if you find something big there. Best of luck to you.

@knight Ok it should handle it then. I'll have to update the drivers first before I attempt this. Probably not going to be mentally ready to try until tomorrow or the day after but we'll see.

Locking the thread is probably in order at this point unless somebody has something important to tell me.

@MarkSoupial TBH I'm not even sure anymore. Maybe the laptop is good enough. I just hope this silly ghosting effect doesn't keep being an issue like it has been thus far

@MarkSoupial

Laptop = Windows 7 PC = Windows XP

Hence why I said I will try with the laptop

@MarkSoupial Ok I'll try it with the laptop I normally use to record runs (My PC is still in Windows XP). Never have streamed before but I'll give it a shot.

hilo: The Site
British Columbia, CanadaShadax8 years ago

@knight That would require a new PC as the current one is not strong enough for streaming (which is very resource intensive) and a much better router and better internet speed. So with that not being an option until months down the road due to financial reasons, I will prioritize the guides before I push forward with more runs in the future.

Yup it's the capture card.

https://twitter.com/d4gr0n85/status/838535829509169152

Both these videos are paused on the same frame of the intro.

The smaller video on the right recorded the intro at mobile settings of my capture card. This automatically kills the attempt to capture the game feed at 60 frames a second preventing the ghosting you mentioned about.

The bigger video on the right is recorded with standard settings and contains exactly what you consider to be suspect. This is also the settings used for the run in question.
