Thread: Neutopia II

Just watched your video, pretty cool stuff. I'd love to discover if any of these glitches could be useful for a speedrun!

I'd also love to know if there are any glitches in the first Neutopia, as well. The closest I've seen was something I did accidentally, when I somehow clipped into the temple mother's sprite right after beating a crpyt, but all that did was result in a softlock as I was unable to move after that, so unfortunately not useful, but I guess at least it's something?

Keeping the timing as is works for me, as my proposal for that change was just a minor adjustment. I felt much more strongly about the finishing of the 24th race, so I appreciate you for making this change to the rules.

I agree with this, so I'm down with having the change officially made.

What do you think of changing the end timing as I suggested?

If an official change is to be made requiring that you don't finish last on Track 24, then I would suggest making a corresponding change that time now ends upon seeing the trophy screen after completing Track 24 (as opposed to the Game Over you would see when finishing last).

Not sure this ultimately matters all that much, but I had a random thought: for this category, time ends upon losing control at the end of Track 24... but there's nothing that says you have to not come in last on that race, right? So technically you could just sit there at the starting line and wait for an enraged yellow car to finish and you'd still be good.

I mean, it's more fun to actually race through the course while you're waiting for the yellow car, but it helps to pay close attention to when the yellow dot hits the finish line at the end of the ninth lap to make sure that you're stopping the timer at just the right time.

Thanks for doing the research on this JSR. I'm glad that you have a source that knows how the original BS versions worked.

California, USAvanni_van1 year ago

How would we verify if the feature was in the original?

I suppose a separate category could be created that would allow it, if anyone felt so inclined (personally I don't think that's necessary).

I posted this question in the discord server, but it seems rather sleepy there so I figured I'd ask here too. It occurred to me that in the src rules for this game, nowhere does it state that you are not allowed to do "up+a" (in this case pressing select) to force the continue/retry/save screen. It would certainly save time over doing the death warps, especially for the 100% category. Is this something that should be added into the rules, or would using select be allowed?

It's really funny that you post this today, because just yesterday I approved a run of Neutopia done on the TG-16 Mini. I did notice one slight difference with the mini version, specifically with magic ring usage, but otherwise they appeared to run identically. I'm not a mod for Neutopia II so I can't make a decision for this game, but I would hope that runs done on the Mini version would be accepted, unless something significant is discovered that would make the community reconsider.

I have added a .zip file in the Resources section that includes all of the detailed maps you will need in order to complete the 100% category run. Lots of credit goes to Sveniroth for compiling these maps.

Also, I have updated the link for my video tutorial to direct to my YouTube version of it, as I prefer that to Twitch VODs for this sort of thing, so hopefully that will make it more accessible for you folks, as well.

May I ask why you're not allowing emulator runs? With the TG-16 being such a relatively obscure console, disallowing emulator runs is going to rule out the vast majority of speedrunners. If you're desperately looking for runners of this game, as you put it, I'm not sure that this is the best approach, but nevertheless, I am interested in hearing your reasoning for that decision.

OH DAMN SON YOU JUST GOT TOLD

California, USAvanni_van4 years ago

How long have you been working on these? I watched a couple of them already and I like some of the strats you used, I'll have to give them a try. I'd love to see you make some attempts live on twitch sometime; in fact, it appears that I'm your first follower!

Unfortunately my capture card seems to no longer work with OBS, so I haven't done any attempts at this game for a long time because I won't be able to stream/record them. Hopefully I can get that fixed soon so I can get back to it!

Yeah, if you've never seen the glitches to which TM is referring, then you should definitely check out one of the sub-2 hour videos from the No Credits Warp category. Even if you have absolutely no idea what's going on, it's still well worth it just for the shock and entertainment value.

I discovered today that if you do a soft reset after you get to the "The End" screen, when you start a new game, you take double the damage that you normally would in subsequent playthroughs. I'm considering possibly making this its own category, Any thoughts?
