We don't use IGT here because in this mod, you can skip the Time Bonus by holding the A button. That means the score count doesn't add timeloss, so we can use pure RTA instead.

I don't have much knowledge about cyber security to make an assumption, but would it be fine if SMS was used just for commenting rights and DM rights, as it is the only form of social interaction on the website, but not for direct account access? I know, it would be an extra hassle, would be an extra step for moderators to comment on stuff ( While I honestly think it's not a big deal, but i'm not a moderator to have an opnion on that) and the phone numbers are a sensitive info nowdays with everything connecting to our phones, but it is one of the only ways I can think of efficiently stopping one person who isn't educated on how to fake a SIM and get SMS using that, and since in order to use a SIM service you need to provide your Social Security Number (at least that's how it is in my country), even buying multiple SIM chips wouldn't do the trick.

Yes, SMS isn't safe at all for account protection, but I've seen stuff like Discord and (I think) twitch have limitations for certain servers or channels, where in some of them the moderator can add a 2FA requirement where the person needs to register their phone number and input a code from SMS, which allows them to talk in the server. I believe this is separete from the regular Discord 2FA for account access, which is why I suggested SMS. The main issue I see is not trusting the website with your number, which is fair and I probably wouldn't either.

Again please correct me if I'm poorly informed, It just saddens me we are witnessing a severe case of... you know what. And we can't do nothing to protect the victim(s). Of course they are the ones who need to seek help, but it would be so nice if there was a solution to prevent this situation to happen again in the future to anyone.

You have a fair point Reverse. I've thought of the issues surrounding IP bans myself and understand why it's doesn't entirely fix the issue with ban evading and multi accounts, and creates the possibility of innocent people being affected. However it's a shame this website doesn't have any sort of measure to guarantee someone can't create multiple accounts manually to spam the forums, which is why I suggested IP bans since it seems like the most basic measure the staff could take, even if not the best one. But as you said it does create some possibly issues and its not ideal. A better method is necessary, I agree.

Edit: Just to add to what I said above, I apologize if suggesting/supporting IP bans was an ignorant opnion from my part, as the scale of the consequences IP Bans could bring didn't immediately cross my mind when thinking about it.

I've seen several people suggest some sort of limitation for forum posts, like a 1 week delay for comments, or at least 1 or more runs for it (Though this would make trolls and spammer bots attack boards which would be another problem). Perhaps locking someone's commenting rights behind a verification method like a cellphone number SMS message would be good since I suppose you can't easily get multiple phone numbers? I don't know how easy it is to fake that or how safe the method is, however.

@Merl_ Agreed. I sent a suggestion to implement IP bans through support hub earlier today as well and I hope the staff considers it. Even if IP bans are possible to evade they provide an extra wall for ban evading and is a basic feature every website needs to have IMO.

IMO Moderators should have the ability to disable run comments in the entire board. Because now older runs with runners who don't use SRC anymore/Never even used it (like historical runs) have risk of getting spammed too. Is this possible now? I don't see a clear mention on the changelog unless I'm missing something.

Also, can images still get embed on comments? That's a huge risk right there, as several accounts have been posting harmful images, even NSFW content.

It honestly depends on the game and the quality of those features, but in general I would say no. For example, Sonic Mania has leaderboard support, but no way to playback someone elses time demo (Only the runner themselves can), so that community relies on video proof on an external leaderboard instead of the in-game one.

But even if those score tracking tools are accurate and verifiable with video proof (EX: Trackmania? ), I think a good and active community can always take place. Most players will want to share and discuss strats, interact with other people who engage in the same hobby, etc. So personally I don't think it makes much of a difference.

For me the worst part is that, as someone mentioned on twitter early on, the game's streams advertisement has been going on for a while today, the same day where the UKSG Autumn marathon is being streamed live on Twitch. It's pretty lame that instead of sharing an actual marathon of games that have actual active communities and speedruns around ( not saying that Severed Steel can't have those, but the game released today!! ) and which is also raising money for charity, they are sharing a day one released game as a way to promote it as a speedgame, before people even know what the game is all about!

Read the mod's comment on this thread.

This is a pretty weird situation in my opnion. The hasn't been any announcement about this partnership before ( As far as I know! ) and multiple streams are being showcased on the frontpage, some of which weren't even speedruns, just people casually playing the game. What is going on?

It's better if you ask this in the Doom community forums. Usually for games that require/ask for demos you would upload them to an external website and just link them in your submission.

But the Doom community will be able to assist you in more detail.

As far as I know no such tool for playing back demos on a web browser exist for the Doom games. Even SDA which is (to my knowledge) the authority on Doom demos and speedruns doesn't have something like that. That would probably be really hard to do because a demo file is just, as the name implies, a demo for the game itself to playback. I suppose the browser itself would have to play Doom and then playback the demo which I imagine isn't that easy.

If such a tool exists it would be pretty dope though, but I don't think SRC will or can implement this.

Many games don't have a decent IL support as well. Most games that have popular IL categories are those with in-game timers or time attack modes included in them, but if a stage in the game doesn't have a timer it's an extra hassle to keep track of times since they need to be RTA and IGT is way more convenient.

Also, please don't do this.

Not only this is a waste of money (not trying to dictate what you should do, it's your money... just a suggestion from someone who thinks money is very valuable ), this is very dangerous and in my opnion no one should go around doing this kind of stuff for a ''World record''! Please take care of yourself.

I don't know what you exactly mean, but you are completely wrong. Since the 90's (not even 2010's!) when people were speedrunning Doom and Quake, Luck and Skill was always involved...So is the same today, the difference is that we have more tools to gather information and learn about games, so the learning processs became way quicker and simplier. In any case, runs in 2021 still have luck involved (when a luck factor is present, like in an rpg or games with random enemy/platform patterns, for example).

Also, I don't understand why you said ''nobody cared about LGBTQIA+ until like 2020'' . Not only this has nothing to do with your argument, but it comes off as very disrespectul in my opnion.

Not sure what you mean, but I will assume you are asking about if deaths count to a speedrun.

For most speedruns, dying is fine and it is counted towards your final time, though most of the time it just loses time (but it's okay if you are starting out). There are exceptions of games that don't allow deaths or continues (in case of continues, some arcade titles that require coins for extra continues for example), but what I described is the usual scenario.

Merl, I think he means the japanese version of the NES. The FDS is an disk addon for the Famicom. I assume that's what OP is talking about.

Famicom and Super Famicom aren't added because they are just the japanese counterparts of the NES and SNES, so they are pretty much the same.

If you want to submit times to the Mario Galaxy 2 Board, you need to record your runs as video proof is necessary for that board (and for most boards in this site). You can record using a camera, webcam or a capture card, anything as long as your video is clearly visible. It doesn't need to be amazing quality, just recognizable enough.

With that said, nothing stops you from speedrunning without recording, in fact many people do that and have as much fun. Whoever you won't be able to submit any personal records to the board like this. This is up to you.

If you want tips with Mario Galaxy 2 in specific you are better off asking in that game's respective forum and community. Good luck!
