How do you say a word without it becoming an emote?

I made a guide with the word \football and it came out as football. How do I circumvent this without using a slash?

discord also had that problem where if u typed ":D" it would become a weird look smile but this is even worse because literal words get turned to emotes lol. They should just add a setting that disables text emotes or something like discord has.

@MeesterTweester Just copy either of the all lowercase footballs above you in the thread. Or the football in this post.

You can include a zero width space somewhere in the word to prevent it being displayed, I think: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-width_space

If you're saying words and they're becoming emotes, it sounds like a real problem. I'd say the source of the matter is that you spend too much time online and these emote things have infected your brain. Stay off the internet a while to detox that out, perhaps read some fine literature to restore your previous use of the English language.

Well, either that, or you've broken the 4th wall and finally realized we live inside an MMO.
