What is Results Screen Storage?
Results Screen Storage, or RSS for short, is an extension of Pause Menu Storage (PMS for short) that lets you store the results screen. In regards for full game runs (both for NG+, NG, and ILs), this abuses the timing rules for the start of the run (and ending for ILs in a sense).
What does this do for a run?
If you complete a level and activate PMS right before it ends, you can have the pause menu and results screen overlap each other. During this time, if you press "Restart Level" on the pause menu, the level restarts, however from the results screen being up, the script to progress to the next level is still activated, which after skipping the opening FMV(s) of a level progresses you to the next level after it, effectively skipping the level.
For example, for a NG+ full game run, you complete the first level (It's All Greek to Me), and once the level restart happens, the LiveSplit timer itself will start on the opening FMVs, marking the beginning of a run. Then of course Greek gets skipped and you progress onto the next level.
Isn't this pre-run setup? Can't you just ban all of that?
Yes, but multiple things are defined as pre-run setup. The entirety of NG+ in this game is just pre-run setup. Obviously, if this was done in a NG (new game/file) run, it would get rejected immediately due to progress being made in game before the run officially starts. This is the simplest way of handling it, which is banning this specific technique.
The main thing of why these specifically apply to NG+ and IL runs are that they are all runs that absolutely require pre-run setup. If there was a way to do this within the level rather than from the start of the run, then it would be discussed on what to do regarding it.
Aren't there other things that can be defined as RSS?
Rewards/Results Screen Skip is another thing that is able to be defined as "RSS", but this is also banned for NG+ and ILs. There are three methods of doing this.
- Depending on the level, if you complete the last primary objective, you are able to warp away to the next level in Mission Select. ILs end timing on when the rewards/results screen shows up, while NG+ has it as a requirement because otherwise you could just not finish the level.
- If you pause the game right after skipping the ending FMV of a level, you are able to warp away to the next level in Mission Select.
- If you activate PMS, once the rewards/results screen shows up, if you unpause, the game progresses onwards.
The last two mean absolutely nothing for ILs, unless you really wanna extend out the ending of your run with the second one. NG+ just needs to see everything through to the end, because restrictions need to be put into place if the whole run can just warp to levels at any point. On the plus side, this tech is completely allowed for NG runs.
Does this affect Challenge Mode?
Both of these do not affect Challenge Mode, as the game does a proper restart when pressing "Restart Level", which triggers a loading screen. Once the level has finished loading, nothing persists over. If you try to unpause during the results screen, the game also does not progress either, so all you do is just run around with the screen up. This applies to both the win and fail screens.
The leaderboards have been updated to clarify stuff in the rules regarding both old and new techniques that affect pretty much every Story Mode related category.
The rulings now clarify that "Results Screen Storage" and "Rewards/Results Screen Skips" are banned depending on the category. To learn m
