Modern Speed Tech Explained

Video is an example run of Fireball Beach Sprint in Best Lap Challenge Mode, including a handcam and commentary in the form of closed captioning.

This guide explains how to do all of the DTW zoomer tricks, and how all 1 (one) of the cool kids (me) are getting 18:xx times.

Speed Storage:

  • Every character's top speed is higher on Race Mode on Hard difficulty, compared to Best Lap Challenge Mode.
  • By selecting a race on Hard through the main menu, completing that race, then using the quick menu to go to Best Lap Challenge, the higher top speed carries over into BLC Mode.
  • This glitch easily saves 2-3 minutes over not doing it, and is an incredibly free way to cut a 23:xx time down to a 21 or even 20:xx time.

Speed Bash:

  • This trick does not work on the Nintendo Switch release of this game (except on v1.0.0).
  • A side bash can be performed by moving the right stick to the left/right on the ground.
  • By quickly moving the right stick between down-left and up-left (or down-right and up-right, though this is trickier), your character will proceed to do multiple sidebashes in quick succession, moving sideways at ridiculous speeds. This is called a speedbash.

Lateflip:

  • By moving the right stick in any direction while in the air, you can perform an air trick. (Up = frontflip; Down = backflip; Right = 180; Left = sideflip)
  • By performing a frontflip (or backflip) just before landing, the game is tricked into thinking you sucessfully performed an air trick and gives you the turbo bonus from the trick.
  • By jumping and chaining a 180 + lateflip together, you can get one full section of turbo, effectively on demand.
  • You should always try to end every sequence of air tricks with a lateflip, unless the terrain is such that a lateflip would cause your car to crash.

Optimal Air Tricks:

  • Certain sequences of air tricks give more turbo than others. From what I've found, these are the most optimal sequences of air tricks for varying airtimes: ----- Small Air (e.g. after jumping, <2 seconds): 180, (180 if possible), lateflip. ----- Medium Air (e.g. going off a small ramp, 2-4 seconds): 180, sideflip, (180 if possible), lateflip. ----- Big Air (e.g. going off a large ramp, 5+ seconds): 180, sideflip, front/backflip, (sideflip if possible), 180, (front/backflip if possible) lateflip.
