Any% Mission Order (Alternative - WR Route)

This route was created in order to avoid the phone call interrupting the Wrench in the Works mission start. Do note that you can still get that call unexpectedly or at a different spot if you are slow between missions.

Some Mission Speedrun Strats

Load Remover/Autosplitter (Livesplit)

Make sure you use the load remover if you are running this game on PC. More information can be found here here: https://www.speedrun.com/wd2/thread/4x3j5 or https://github.com/zoton2/LiveSplit.Scripts/blob/master/LiveSplit.WatchDogs2-README.md

Difficulty

Any difficulty can be used on runs, but the recommended difficulty for any% is easy since it allows us to go as fast as possible.

Skipping Cutscenes

Most cutscenes in this game can be skipped with the Esc button (on PC).

Mission Objectives Module HUD

For some reason, this HUD (displayed in the upper left of the screen) delays the completion of a mission. Turning this HUD off will save several minutes in the run. Warning: Turning this off will prevent the mission objectives from being displayed.

Rewards Module HUD

This HUD delays phone calls from coming in. Turning this off will save waiting time for phone calls.

Nudle Maps App

This will be the most used phone app in the game. Using this app, you can teleport to kiosks, hackerspaces, shops, or races (sailboat, motorbike, kart, and etc.). The shortcut button should always be used to access this app ("m" on the keyboard).

Car on Demand App

You can unlock this app while going to the hackerspace for the first time. This is the most useful app in the game (aside from Nudle Maps) because it guarantees you a fast vehicle to drive to the next mission/objective (unless you used it within the last minute). Unlike the first game, this game allows you to use the app during a mission.

After unlocking the app, you immediately have access to the Zusume R, a sports car with great acceleration and decent top speed. The Sayonara can also be bought at the start of the run and will probably be the vehicle of choice for most of the run. The Dangerzone is unlocked after Limp Nudle and can be used for a couple of missions. The Dangerzone is just a special version of the Baumsteiger, a performance car. However, you need to drive the Dangerzone carefully because it can be destroyed in one high speed collision.

Always use the shortcut button to access the app quickly (default keyboard button is "o"). Make sure you also set up the app so that cars can be ordered through the recent orders tab. To exit the app quickly after ordering the car, you can use the phone button.

DLC

Almost all DLC in the game are not allowed to be used in any% runs. Only those that are normally free (Ultra textures pack) are allowed.

Hotkeys/Button Shortcuts

You should use these as much as possible if you are playing on PC because you can save a lot of time on menus.

Default buttons:

  • Y - Detonate all IEDs/Electro Shock Devices that you placed or threw
  • U - Driver SF app
  • I - Research (skills) app
  • O - Car on Demand app
  • J - Dedsec app
  • M - Nudle Map app
  • MMB (Middle Mouse Button) - Enter/exit phone. Doesn’t always work: for example, if you’re in the Research app.

If you have a mouse with extra buttons, you can also put quick-hack and Esc on it to make things easier for you.

Distracting Enemies (to run past them with no pursuit)

This is done using the Create Distraction skill (obtained at the start of the run) or with the Massive Communication Disrupt. With Create Distraction, you want to quick-hack them.

For most missions where you want to run past enemies with no pursuit, you can distract them with the skill. Use Create Distraction to target individual enemies or Mass Comm Disrupt to distract everyone within a certain radius in the area.

In-Person Conversations/Dialogue

Most dialogue can be skipped by pressing Esc. However, in-person dialogue (non-cutscene) has a few differences. Pressing Esc individually seems to only skip one line of dialogue and you will need to tap Esc to skip everything. A better method for skipping in-person dialogue is to simply hold Esc. This will skip all lines of dialogue instantly.

Some in-person dialogue requires that you be in the correct position for the dialogue to begin. If Marcus is not in the correct position, the game will move him into position before the dialogue will begin. However, if you moved Marcus into the correct position perfectly, the dialogue will start instantly. This can be seen during hideout introduction, R&R, etc.

Starting Missions Instantly (Talking to NPCs)

Some missions require that you be in the correct position for the mission to start when you talk to the NPC (Hack and Run, Get Smart Car, Newly Dawned, Missing Persons, ICU, Trouble at Home, Second Wind, Nine Lives, Spinal Tap, etc.) . If you try to start the mission by talking to the NPC and Marcus isn't in the correct position, the game will move him there before starting the mission.

A trick to get the correct position is talk to the NPC normally (before the mission phone call shows up) and Marcus will be in the spot to trigger the mission instantly. However, you will not always have the opportunity to do this trick because the mission phone calls tend to happen before you get the chance. In most cases, you have to make your best guess for the correct positioning to trigger the mission start.

For missions that can be started by talking to Dedsec informants (Mindfuck, Sabotage, Shipwreck, Root Canal, A Real Dog Fight, They're on a Boat!, etc.), you just have to be in range of them to interact. Pressing the interact button within this range should start the mission instantly as long as you have the camera in the correct direction.

Spawning Vehicles in Preferred Spots at the Start of Missions

Vehicles will spawn in different spots around the mission area depending on where your vehicle is when starting the mission.

  • For example, before Sunday Schooled, we dump the bike to the right of the stairs so that it spawns closer:
  • Before starting Wrench in the Works, the bike/vehicle can be parked/dumped in a specific spot so that it spawns close to the hacking puzzle.
  • Before starting A Tempting !nvitation, the vehicle can be parked in a specific spot so that it spawns closer to the bench.

In general, if your vehicle spawns far away or despawns, you may have put it in the incorrect spot.

Optimal Money Bags Obtained (For Buying Sayonara, Sniper Rifle and Quadcopter)

Note: This is with $30000 from UPlay Rewards.

  • 1 during Swimming Upstream/Home Sweet Haum (no time loss because waiting for percentage counter) (4700-4900)
  • 2 after Limp Nudle in Silicon Valley (18000-19900 each)
  • 1 before Sabotage (on top of the pawn shop) (18000-19900)
  • 2 after Hacker War (Bunker Bust) in Marin (18000-19900)

Optional (Convenient) Money Bags

  • 1 outside of building during Intro/tutorial intro (4700-4900)
  • 1 during False Profits/Missing Persons (right of laser key data) (~4700)
  • 1 near end of Alphabet Soup/Limp Nudle (4700-4900)
  • 1 during Sabotage/Hacker War inside restaurant (This can be obtained if you didn't get 2 after Limp Nudle)(18000-19900)
  • 1 during W4tched (Peeping Toms) at the docks that used to be obtained in runs (18000-19900)
  • 1 during W4tched (Peeping Toms) near other money bag that used to be obtained in runs (this can be obtained with no time loss, but you have to be extremely quick) (18000-19900)
  • 1 during A Brutal Discovery/Eye for an Eye 2 (can't really get this one if you do the quadcopter strat) (4700-5000)
  • 1 during Root Canal/Eye for an Eye (loses a few seconds in any% because you can't use the fastest Huerta quick-kill strat, but it may be more viable in 100% or other categories) (18000-19900)

Skillset 1 - Any% (Optimal)

Note: This requires that you obtain three (3) research points during wait in between Hacker War and W4tched. Three (3) Research Points are obtained from Uplay Rewards. You also don't obtain the car unlock skill for this skillset. As always, use the shortcut button to access the research app ("i" is default on keyboard).

  • Create Distraction (2 RP) and Botnet Upgrade (2 RP) during skills intro
  • Electro shock devices (2 RP), Vehicle Directional Hack (2 RP), and Engine override (4 RP) after finishing Cyberdriver/Before 1st False Profits mission
  • Environmental RC (2 RP), Improved Profiler (4 RP), and Mass Comm Disrupt (6 RP) after R&R (while waiting for Limp Nudle call)
  • Botnet (4 RP) during Limp Nudle drive with bus (recharges botnet)
  • Botnet (4 RP), Botnet (6 RP), and Explosive Device (4 RP) before Sabotage
  • Botnet (6 RP), Taunt (4 RP), and Speed boost (6 RP) for remote RC during Peeping Toms wait.
  • Enhanced Spring (6 RP), Proximity Scanner (4 RP), and Expert RC Engineering (6 RP) at the end of All-Seeing Eye
  • Remote Gadgets (8 RP) during Shanghaied wait (doesn't lose time because call timing still progresses in menus.

Speed Boost is obtained during the Peeping Toms wait. Enhanced Spring, Expert RC Engineering, and Remote Gadgets are obtained during Waiting Game.

At the Delaware data center during Hack Teh World, you have about 15 seconds to get skills without losing any time after you complete the hack and have control of the drone (because the counter still goes up when you're in the menu).

Skillset 2 - Any% (Used in 2:33:00 Run)

No car unlock skill is obtained here also.

  • Create Distraction (2 RP) and Electro shock devices (2 RP) during skills intro
  • Botnet (2 RP), Vehicle Directional Hack (2 RP), and Engine override (4 RP) after finishing Cyberdriver/Before 1st False Profits mission
  • Environmental RC (2 RP), Improved Profiler (4 RP), and Mass Comm Disrupt (6 RP), Explosive Device (4 RP), and two Botnet upgrades (4 RP, 4 RP) during Alphabet Soup (Limp Nudle) bus drive
  • Taunt (4 RP), Speed boost (6 RP), and Enhanced Spring (6 RP) for remote RC during end of All-Seeing Eye/Hack Teh World (No time wasted to get these as mentioned before)

Skillset 3 - Any% (What I Used in 2020)

Note: This requires that you obtain a research point during wait in between Walk in the Park and Cyberdriver. 3 Research Points are obtained from Uplay Rewards. No car unlock skill is obtained here also.

  • Create Distraction (2 RP) and Electro shock devices (2 RP) during skills intro
  • Botnet (2 RP), Vehicle Directional Hack (2 RP), Engine override (4 RP), and Explosive Device (4 RP) after finishing Cyberdriver/Before 1st False Profits mission
  • Auto Takedown (2 RP), Robot Exploit (4 RP), Security Laser shutdown (6 RP), Botnet (4 RP), and Environmental RC (2 RP) during Alphabet Soup (Limp Nudle) bus drive
  • Botnet (4 RP), Improved Profiler (4 RP) and Mass Comm Disrupt (6 RP) during Bunker Bust drive
  • Taunt (4 RP) and Speed boost (6 RP) for remote RC during end of All-Seeing Eye/Hack Teh World (No time wasted to get these as mentioned before)

Reload Checkpoint/Restart Mission

  • Reload checkpoint during Cyberdriver 1/Hack and Run to teleport out of hideout after mission start.

  • Reload autosave during Limp Nudle each time for the first two times that you pick up people with the bus (to recharge botnet for Engine Boost). Only do this if you actually need botnet.

  • Reload checkpoint during Eye for an Eye mission (A Real Dog Fight) before you assassinate Pablo the Skinner to skip the cutscene.

  • This is with the old strats. Reload checkpoint at end of Shanghaied/Chinatown shuffle to escape area. The door that you came in (if you use the shooting strat to enter the building) will normally be closed, so doing this is the best way to escape.

  • Reload checkpoint (blow yourself up with IEDs or use the phone) before getting on ship during Shanghaied boat mission (They're on a Boat!) when the save icon pops up.

  • Reload checkpoint for first autosave inside building during Man vs Machine.

  • Reload checkpoint for second autosave inside building during Man vs Machine if you are doing the quadcopter strat.

  • Reload checkpoint (kill yourself with ESDs/IEDs or use the phone) for autosave after finishing hacking puzzle during Man vs Machine and before door to spiderdrone opens. This only saves a couple of seconds of IGT at most, but it doesn't save real time.

  • Reload checkpoint for autosave after hacking air gap computer in Motherload. This skips a few seconds of waiting time.

  • Reload checkpoint (kill yourself with ESDs/IEDs or use the phone) when the save icon on the last elevator ride during Motherload pops up. This saves IGT, but it doesn't save real time.

  • Restart mission at beginning of Home Sweet Haum/Swimming Upstream to teleport across street and spawn vehicles.

  • This is if you are not using the Sayonara. Restart mission/reload checkpoint at beginning of W4tched/Dellums Towers to teleport across street.

Places where Reload Checkpoint Could be Faster (But Blocked by Phone Calls)

  • Start of Heist Sweet Heist.
  • After Limp Nudle cutscene where you help Horatio.
  • Drop the Baby (after collecting all parts).

Missions with Cutscene Fades Where You Can Move

Some missions have cutscene fades where you can move.

  • Intro after cutscene where Marcus knocks two guards out
  • False Profits 4/Missing Persons after opening cutscene
  • False Profits 4/Missing Persons after rescuing Jimmy
  • False Profits 5/Blasphemer after opening cutscene
  • Looking Glass 2/Invite to Mayhem when escaping from police cutscene starts
  • Watched 1/Peeping Toms after opening cutscene
  • A Tempting Invitation/Power to Sheeple 3 after opening cutscene
  • Corrupt Congressman/Power to Sheeple 4 after opening cutscene (can get in car during fade)
  • Robot Wars 2 (after cutscene)
  • Motherload after Wrench section beginning cutscene

Breaking Car Windows/Removing Car Doors

You can break car windows and knock doors off in one hit by using a handgun or stun gun up close (literally by smashing them, not shooting). Shooting a car window with 2 bullets (from a handgun) also works to break them. An optimal run might use this to skip the car unlock skill and save time on menuing, but knocking car doors off isn't easy. The angle at which you aim and the height of the vehicle affects what Marcus will do. This does not appear to work on convertibles or cars with their windows already broken.

Roll Canceling/Jumping Over Railings

You can prevent Marcus from rolling on the ground (when dropping down from a higher elevation or jumping over a railing) if you let go of sprint when dropping down.

  • When jumping over a railing, you want to hop over it at an angle (about 45 degrees) and hold W, A, and D (forward, left, and right) in order for Marcus to not stumble.

Hacking Aim Assist (In-Game Setting)

Adjusting this setting up makes it so that you don't have to point your cursor directly at something to hack it. Recommended setting is at 80% or higher. This also allows for some strats to work.

Quitting Into Main Menu Strat

It's just quitting into the main menu and then mashing space to get quickly back into the game (Continue should be selected by default when you get into the main menu). This saves game time and prevents media broadcasts from delaying phone calls from coming in. There are 3 places where I recommend the use of the quit to main menu:

  1. After obtaining key data (after Walk in the Park) and before Cyberdriver start if the mission hasn't already popped up
  2. After completing Looking Glass and getting the sniper rifle from 3d printer (waiting for Limp Nudle start phone call)
  3. After completing Hack Teh World (waiting for Shanghaied start phone call)

Car Entry Bug

There is an annoying bug in the game where Marcus can refuse to enter a vehicle despite pressing the button. This can be fixed by shooting your gun or breaking the car window/door (be careful of police or other enemies noticing).

Dedsec App Teleport

The Dedsec app can be used to teleport to missions that you have already done. Replaying missions will put you at the beginning of the mission, and you can quit the mission to exit. This is not very useful for any% because you can fast travel everywhere already, but it may be useful for other categories. I use this trick to teleport to Robot Wars in my run, but it is about the same as fast travelling normally.

Use the shortcut button if you want to access the Dedsec app. It's "J" for the default button on the keyboard.

Manipulating NPCs to Open Doors By Shooting

NPCs in this game can open doors that you cannot. By shooting your gun outside of a building that you want to get into, you can manipulate the people inside or even outside to open a door nearby. They will often open the door to go outside to investigate or because they're scared.

  • False Profits/Sunday Schooled
  • False Profits/Blasphemer (guard nearby will go inside temple to take cover)
  • Haum Sweet Haum/Heist Sweet Heist (guards inside the area can open the front gate)
  • Shanghaied/Chinatown Shuffle (old strat)

Making Police Escapes Easier by Killing Sniper

The main reason why some police chases are difficult is because of the helicopter. You can make it back off by shooting and killing the sniper in the helicopter.

  • Cyberdriver/Get Smart Car
  • Looking Glass/!Nvite to Mayhem

Mission Vehicle "Storage"

If you finish a mission while in a vehicle, the same vehicle will be teleported to the start of the next mission if you fast travel to that mission directly and start it.

For example, the vehicle that you are driving at the end of Peeping Toms/1st W4tched mission is teleported to the front of the shop after finishing Café Culture if you fast travel there while driving the vehicle. This also applies to other missions, but it doesn't happen often because you don't normally fast travel directly to a mission start while in a vehicle.

Avoiding Engaging in Combat with Enemies

Enemies will normally engage in combat with you if their detection meter fills all the way up. However, this can be avoided if you stay still (don't move) or hack their comms when their detection meter fills up (this can lead to them searching the area instead). They will attempt to hold you or arrest you if you stay still, but moving will make them engage you in combat (if they're not distracted). Knocking them out or killing them when the detection meter fills up can also work.
