PAL isn't banned on Dreamcast because it runs at 60hz so it can directly compete with NTSC-U.

50hz PAL (GCN, PS, N64) is 17% slower than NTSC but it seems the Devs never changed the IGT to account for the lower FPS, so yes on the surface PAL is "faster" on IGT compared with NTSC but only because it's broken. You aren't going to see a surge in runners importing PAL consoles to get a lower IGT when it comes at the cost of a 17% slower game and so much more real time lost for 1 attempt. 50hz PAL has and always will be dead.

Theres old threads about it from my years ago. Very good Japanese version WR's were beaten by very bad PAL runs on Gamecube and PlayStation (console and Emu btw)

For example Poppos Leon A PS2 run was beaten by 1 minute on a PAL run that picked up the shotgun and had very poor routing. Basically a new runner posting practically their first ever run beat a WR that stood for 7 years, a run regarded as the best console record to ever be submitted until it was very recently beaten for real.

Also on gamecube the WR was beaten by 3 minutes, cant remember the exact time but it was sub 59 (IGT) Leon A on PAL.

There were other runs but those are the 2 that stood out the most, it was discussed at length right here on the forums and in discord at the time it was a problem, ultimately it was decided that since there were only 5 runs throughout the entire leaderboard on PAL all of which were old runs it was best to remove them rather than separate by regions to cater for a dead platform, something that i personally still stand by today.

Emu isn't allowed for N64 or Dreamcast

As the rules state the PC category is for Sourcenext only, there's multiple reasons as to why we have this rule.

Firstly compatibility issues, the PC ports of the classic RE's were never the best even way back when they were released, almost all early versions of the game have crash bugs in the lab specifically for Claire A and both B scenarios while entering the monitor cutscene, on all versions only Leon A was the only scenario without any issues, it's still possible to complete the other scenarios if a save file was made.

Secondly is the In game timer, it works differently across some versions, some pause the IGT on black screens, for example entering and exiting the inventory, before or after a door transition. There was also a version that counted credits towards the IGT.

Before we had the Rebirth patch I spent countless hours researching and playing different versions of the game to try and find a version that could co-exist with Sourcenext because of all the compatibility problems we had with it but no luck. I tried every PC version I could get my hands on listed here https://www.crimson-ceremony.net/lostreleases/regame/re2.php And none of them matched up to the point they could co-exist on the same leader board.

FYI the best release of the game aside from Sourcenext is "Sold out extreme software" version, it's an Eu version with very little problems the IGT is just slightly different to Sourcenext and obviously it's English text so much slower.

You'll still have to time it when you skip the FMV to have the IGT start at 0

It's a game related problem that can't be fixed

I don't see any lag, it just seems like your livesplit is real time. Check above what nabson posted to fix it

like i asked you yesterday, can you show us a video of what your problem is? it will be a lot easier to help you.

Because it just sounds like you're using the wrong timing method.

Unknown
EnglandStevenMayte2 years ago

That's because they're using an Autosplitter so it counts in game time on livesplit instead of real time, you can get the downloads for it in the resource page here speedrun.com/re2/resources

Do you have a video of your problem? Also Game time and RTA will never be the same because the game timer is tied to frame rate so it counts differently to RTA

Locked.

@Subsonix please don't make more of these threads.

EnglandStevenMayte2 years ago

Really? Locked.

EnglandStevenMayte2 years ago

Locking this now, the original topic was discussed and since then it's just completely derailed

yeah this sort of thing has been known about since the early 2000's, it can be done with most playstation games. A few games explictly state in the rules that you can't do this sort of thing like FF9 and a few other FF games, most don't bother because it's seen as one of those common sense rules.

we'll add it to the rules just for the sake of future clarifcation.

You can also refer to point #5 under "General Gameplay Rules" for the site which states

"Manipulating the game hardware in such a way to affect the console's reading of the game medium is disallowed. A common example of this is "Crooked Cartridge" on the Nintendo 64."

This can be found here https://www.speedrun.com/knowledgebase/site-rules

it's hardware manipulation, Quick croc is a strat within the bounds of the game that requires precise timing to speed up the crocs grab animation. It takes practice to pull off and is a legitimate strat.

Quick Croc cannot be compared with opening your disc tray and closing it again to trick the console into skipping an FMV/credits, thats straight up manipulation which saves a huge chunk of time by tampering with the console just before the run ends.

Also just want to point out that this leaderboard isn't "controlled by one german" as @Subsonix wrote in your stream, Moderators communicate and the decision to reject Subsonix run wasn't something that nabson acted on alone, it was a joint decision. infact i've just rejected it again because it was resubmitted.

In the end, the only real major difference is text speed.

EnglandStevenMayte2 years ago

Yeah, we're looking to maybe add that to the boards

EnglandStevenMayte2 years ago

We're actually in the process of looking at adding the Battle game PC mod to the level leaderboard since it's a direct copy of the Sega Saturn battle game

EnglandStevenMayte2 years ago

The Saturn Emus aren't very well optimized and personally I don't see a need to add another Emu when PS Emu exists

EnglandStevenMayte2 years ago

Perfectly fine to submit the run, it's a very brief pause and doesn't affect anything, congrats on PB

EnglandStevenMayte2 years ago

we can add any game you guys want over here https://www.speedrun.com/refangames without requesting it through SRC so just let one of the fan games series mods know whats wanted and we'll create the board and pass off the mod powers!
