@sam1370 thank you for clarifying. Sometimes I’m prone to getting touchy. I’m sorry and especially if I overreacted. @mruns05 all is good. Thank @roopert83 I disagree, and respect how you worded your disagreement. @Darpey . I’m taking a guess, Mario, as I understand can start on a variety of framerules. Perhaps Luigi must start on a specific frame rule which could be optimal for the glitch. Anyone know if, gameplay-wise Does Luigi start on the same framerule (I.e. same bowser pattern with identical subsequent gameplay), independent of when Mario dies? I’m not tech savvy enough to check myself.

Finally, my original post shows an old video. This would only be a gold medal / WR if

  1. There was a category
  2. Mods accepted YouTube’s December 31 2009 publishing date and
  3. The furnishing of a verifiably dated and videoed run could, by way of backdating a more newly dated (and verifiable) videoed run, retroactively award a former WR / gold-medal speed run.

I realize now that that might be asking too much. My apologies.

@sam1370 No, this was not meant to troll. I came to the speedrun.com's forum asking for help with an idea that I felt would improve the meaning behind the way speedrun.com's Super Mario Bros. category relates to Super Mario Bros. I am putting forth an idea that I believe merits consideration. If you have a criticism about my idea I suggest you voice it. Speedrun.com is a collaborative community. By resorting to name-calling ("troll," even though you used it as a gerund it's still name-calling or at least and ad-homonim(sp?) attack) . you both upset me, and violate the spirit of a collaborative community of which I consider my self a member. In the meantime, speaking of calling out names, even though I'm not Korupt, I think my original post, should read "When the player takes . control over Luigi," where it currently reads "JWILD" (the first instance). I now propose that timing start when the player gains control of Luigi and ends when the Princess says "Thank you Luigi! Your quest is over." Sorry for the mistake. I hopes this post has helped. Sincerely, JWILD

To all those who say that Luigi quest is the same as Mario Any% with a palette swap, I suggest you read my post. Princess Toadstool (aka Princess Peach) thanks Luigi, not Mario upon completion of what I have been calling the Luigi Quest. I for one, think that the Princess' gratefulness is important.

Please strike "World Record" and replace with "Gold Medal."

Can we include Luigi in the Speedrun.com Super Mario Bros. category in some way? I ask party because, I claim video to show The Luigi Quest World Record. Timing starts when JWILD gains control of Luigi and ends when Princess Toadstool says "Thank you Luigi. Your quest is over." Sincerely, JWILD

Yeah. I need guidance though. How does racing work?

I see, by the moderator and KPC's attempt at trolling, that my run was not viewed favorably. I politely ask that they withdraw my run if and only if they create a "survivor, glitchless, deathless, all collectables," run. This game means a lot to me and would respect it if my wishes were met.

The Bioshock collection: Bioshock glitchless xbox and the Bioshock collection: bioshock all collectables runs by KPC sitting atop the leaderboard attempt to troll the leaderboard.

Sorry, I changed my mind. I had originally asked to have it removed. Now I wish for it to remain. I let the fate of the run be up to the moderators. I took a 50 minute break in the middle and feel that that pause time should account for the discrepancy between emulator timing.

Anyone else want to add an itemless category maybe with individual levels? I'd love to see even just a Champion's Road itemless category (maybe by character?), and understand the idea of avoiding the creation of unnecessary categories. There seems to be a fair amount of people with videos relevant to this would-be category on youtube. I'm sorry if this has been covered already (I see that individual levels has).

Add 982. The WR is ~4 hrs; a decent run about 8 or 7hrs. So add that at the end of a, let's say, 26 hour 602 star run and we're at a ~34 hour run. This is doable from a sleep/time perspective, especially since there's a good amount of time to save in both times....the 26 hours and in the 8 hours. Add it.

I'm thinking of making a google doc guide to predicting certain 8-3 Hammer Bro behavior. It'd be nice to know what they do in which framerule, and for those of us who don't know what framerule we are on for whatever reason (inconsistency/too-lazy-to-do-live-splits) it might be helpful to put one up based on the firing patterns of cannons (for instance when the 1st cannon shoots left then right and then 2nd and 3rd cannons remain silent Mario can safely choose to go the TOP route at the second set of Hammer Bros.).

  1. Does such a guide exist?
  2. Am I correct that the patterns of cannon fire predict Hammer Bro behavior (assuming Mario doesn't slow down)?
  3. Would this be useful? Any other input is welcome. Cheers, JWILD

I just wanted to make this available to anyone attempting the Bullet Bill glitch. It's the method that works best for me. It's just one alternative method (among many) to getting the Bullet Bill glitch on 8-2.

Cheers,

update... A quick and easy way to find out whether you made certain frame rules (without splits). I am now 99% certain the frame rule (on flag levels) is applied in the time between mario entering the castle and the "Mario x 3" screen coming up. For instance if Mario enters the castle in 1-1 with a fast 369 and 8.4 seconds lapse between his entering and the "Mario x 3" screen, then Mario has made the fastest frame rule. If something like 8.7 seconds or 8.8 seconds (8.75 really) lapse then Mario has missed the fastest frame rule.

In short I agree with i_o_l As previously stated, at the sub 5:00 level and and especially at 4:57.xx level, we have to protect the integrity of the game and do so with caution. SMB1 is not just any game. The only way to protect the integrity of the top of the leaderboard without streaming attempts is to have the individual submit an attempt along with gigs upon gigs and hours upon hours of failed attempts to TRY to verify authenticity. I think reviewing such large amount of video footage is too burdensome to be realistic. If I have a vote, it's streams necessary for sub 5 runs.

Does anyone know where the framerule gets applied? Like, suppose you have 2 runs on 1-1, the first of which is a frame perfect 370 and the second of which is, say 6 or so frames behind and misses the frame rule (not sure if that's true but it feels about right). In theory there must be some point before the "Mario x 3" screen where the game actually "waits" for the remaining frames (approx 12-16 frames). It would have to be before that screen because otherwise splitting at that screen wouldn't be a good way to detect frame rule misses (and since Darbian and others split at that screen I imagine that's a good screen to do it). I have a feeling the game waitsi when the flag goes up, but I'm unsure... Any help appreciated. cheers, JWILD p.s. If I don't get any answers I'll post a follow up after checking frame-by-frame in imovie. Just wanted to see if anyone had a quick answer.

SMB1 1. I'm torn about the decision regarding converting virtual console times: on the one hand allowing virtual console time corrections would encourage people who normally wouldn't run, to run (and that's a good thing!). On the other hand it takes away some authenticity of the videos (and that's a bad thing). I have an toaster-loader NES and Nestopia (with acceptable lag) so it doesn't affect me, but we do NEED a decision on this.

It also brings up another question. Seeing as how emulators are allowed and how WiiVC is allowed, what about emulating Wii VC ? I prefer Dolphin over Nestopia for running SMB1 and if I get a PB on Dolphin's emulated Wii VC, I would be very upset if it didn't count. I suppose, for now, I will emulate using Nestopia and a ROM (my NES capture hardware is at my other residence until I go back there in 2 weeks).

General:

  1. yes AND no Any emulation that doesn't emulate at the correct framerate should be converted, accept after a certain cutoff. I propose that any sub 5:00 time need be RUN on an NES or an emulator that runs at the correct frame rate (btw does Nestopia do this?). Times between 5:20.xx and 5:00.xx get converted (if and only if they can be converted accurately and precisely). Times of 5:21.00 and slower should not get converted. I hope this makes sense. I think this is the ideal solution...maybe it would be hard to enforce/monitor/correct.

It may seem harsh that I think sub 5's need to be run on an NES or an accurate emulator, but I think part of the beauty of speedrunning is seeing a video (someone elses or one's own) that runs the game quickly in real time. Some of that is lost if the real-time of the video is 5:00 and the converted time is 4:58 or whatever. Allowing Wii VC for certain cutoffs lets people who haven't played the game and want to try it start running, but if you want a WR or something you better run at the correct frame rate! IMHO

  1. Cutoff points: YES I think there should be standards of proof for anything faster than 5:21.00 . I agree with i_o_l and nickj109 .
