Okay, so i wanted to post this for a while. Basically what i do in the video is instead of the risky bump at the end of the level, which often ends in falling or losing a rule, i forward bumped into the first block before second double bros. No matter how slow that bump is, it always saves a rule. It also gives you another advantage of being able to see where the second double bros are, which can decrease the chances of death there. The only way this can fail saving the rule is if you jump too low on the flagpole (as shown on the last attempt), then you are 3 frames short from saving the rule. This bump always works, no matter how slow i did it in 20 attempts all 20 worked and i still had an additional frame. This is of course only for people that dont go for fpg in 8-3.

Infact not really hard if you memorize the levels. I never ever press left in world 8 (except 8-4) Also, this wouldnt be a nightmare for mods since you can clearly tell when left is pressed and i cant think of pretty much any way someone can hide pressing left. So, a single view on the run is enough to see if left was pressed or not. There isnt any way you can hide the fact that you pressed left because even if you press it midair you slow down. Also, if mod sees something wasnt right he can just check the input display to make sure, maximum of 20 min verification which is not a lot for a category that wouldnt be runned by more than max 10 people.

So the category would be (NO L PRESSES) You cant press the left button anywhere in the run. This would be interesting since this takes a bit of skill. So basically i can not think of any% being a possibility because even if you could clip in 4-2 warp zone (which you cant do probably) You could still go only to world 7 at best without l-r because the screen didnt scroll enough. So basically the only category i can think of is 1 warp. You do either 1-2 pipe clip or minus world glitch facing forward (its possible i did it) and enter world 5 in the middle pipe. The difficulty of this becomes that 8-4 walljump for example is REQUIRED. The next problem is that fpg is out of question, because of course you cant press left so not really that doable. Infact, not even 1-2 pipe clip is possible since left button is required for it to work. The only way to get to world 5 without pressing left and beating other stages is by doing facing forward minus world glitch. Without pressing left, a very huge number of glitches in the game are becoming impossible. Fpg is impossible, full fpg is possible in 8-2 though. The other problem is that beating the game without left needs extreme perfection and isnt that easy, however would be interesting to see someone pull it off. By far forward minus world glitch isnt that hard but the problem is you have to do it FIRST TRY to get it to work, which will lead to tons of resets, other than that its self explanatory and not really THAT hard. If you know the levels you can probably do it without that much problem. Even though the game was not supposed to be scrolled to the left side, now i realize how much stuff does that button actually do, and how important it is. Without the left button, nobody could EVER pull off even a sub 10, not even close so yea, i think that you should try playing SMB without using left button and see how fast can you beat the game. GL. Also if mods ever consider adding new categories here you have an idea. Also all runs should include input display because of course the left button can not be pressed at any point.

In my opinion, there should be 2 subcategories in any% and warpless. 60FPS (main) and 50FPS. The physics difference between these versions shall make them seperated because timestamps at the end of the levels for example are mostly different, and also the timer needs to be running at a slighty different framerate - i was using iol fceux timer on a standard pal version and clocked in 4:49 but it actually ended up in 5:50. In the end, fast acceleration, different timestamps, different physics should seperate 50FPS and 60FPS as two different categories. The reason it could not been called ntsc and pal is because of switch, nes classic and so on. 60FPS shall remain the main category, 50 fps as the secondary one. Just my opinion though. EDIT: Also not to say FRAMERULES are also different between these versions which make the NTSC auto timer start too late on PAL.

Mavpole is faster than sockpole, it has no setup at all so you dont need to slow down in fact just make a faith jump and hope your subpixels are right

Insane tas but there is still a time save that is possible- in 8-2 one of the pipes loads the warp to the 8-2 coin room and there you have to do a walljump however if done perfectly you can save about 3 framerules at best. Still tas isnt far from perfection, almost everything was executed perfectly. Good job! I was about to ask blazit to do a tas but you made one that is good enough. It included pretty much everything. Sub 4 sadly isnt possible. But maybe one day

First video proof run of ANY% ateopt completion. Theres still some categories left, ill tag this as WR until someone uploads another run that beats mine. Run was decent, got the 8-2 clip pretty quickly but 8-4 made me lost about 1.5 minutes. My worst ever 8-4. First death caused by a fireball that i didnt knew would hit me because i though the framerule would be similar to normal any%, couldnt be more wrong. Also what i saw was, no matter what rule you get you always get the same hammer bros patterns in 8-3, so just memorize them and you are good to go. Also in 8-4 the first pipe acts differently after you die, after you die it warps you to beggining instead of the first section? weird Heres the link : Do better.

Actually a better category name for that would be 93% since 30 out of all 32 levels are played. Also, There can be 4 categories of this cheat adding minus world and 93% - 93%, Minus World, 1 Warp and any%. Also i though about mixing STAGEO with this cheat but that would be close to impossible though. If you wanna make a leaderboard for all of these, then go on.

Actually sadly no setup for 8-2 since like 3 people played this cheat so far? But once it becomes popular i think a setup could have been found, however that 8-2 clip can be replaced with something like 4-2 wall clip when this cheat becomes popular. For now tho, try completing a run first, no matter how unoptimized it would be. EDIT: Also, a video footage would be nice.

Okay so first of all - All pipes can be used. This causes some errors in levels without warps (such as softlock, dead end and so on) so only use them if you know exactly what youre doing. Second of all - Most objects are replaced with pipes placed in some strange places. This creates new levels. Third of all - 3-3 is impossible. It deletes a important platform and the jump is way too far to make it, so the only two categories possible are 1 warp and any%. Fourth of all - in any% Route - 8-2 has an actually interesting wall clip that is needed to beat the level - its actually easy and needs no setup - Just jump on the "spring", hold left and mash a to clip through the pipe. Its not too hard to be honest and the lakitu dropping stuff on you isnt affecting it at all. fifth of all - Some levels require big mario because clipping is way too difficult without it. (Such as 4-2 pipe in 1 warp that needs to be clipped in) Luckily, all of these clips are very easy and you can do it with a similar setup to minus world big mario, just need to be facing forward and run into it instead of jumping normally. And last of all - This cheat makes some levels easier. For example 4-2 in any% route you can just go into the first pipe and do the wrong warp without doing anything pretty much. In 8-4 theres a pipe that generates behind you. Take it and you can go to the second section in no time. 1-1 is harder, You can take the first pipe in 1-1 and it will take you to the coin room, but there you need to do a walljump hoping your subpixels will be right. My best time i ever gotten on 1-1 was 374 when i got that walljump, however i reccomend not taking it and just playing the level without taking pipes (which ends in 348 at best) because even tho this trick saves 4 seconds its hard to pull it off first try, so i reccomend playing the level in a normal manner. Also, in 4-1, 8-1 and 8-3 you can take the first pipe and it will warp you further saving time. Doesnt work in 8-2, where the pipe just takes you to the start of the level. I hope i covered everything in this pretty long post.

So my idea for a good category in the future would be using the ATEOPT cheat code. The reason its a good code for speedrunning its because it replaces many objects in all levels with pipes, some objects get removed, and also you can enter all pipes (however the risk of softlocking or dead end is pretty high). The only problem with this code is that 3-3 is impossible. I tried but the jump for the moving platform is too far away, and sadly impossible. All other levels are possible though, that means 1 Warp and any% are the categories that can be possible for this cheat code. I reccomend you try to beat the game yourself with this code before responding to this post, thanks.

Yea, i agree the game is still fun, but look : for example new speedruner approaches into the game : tries to break through sub 5 for example : becomes frustrated with the game : at the end, quits. Sm64 is not like this, because they have a whole tas group that analyzes every single aspect of the game, and there is always something to come back to. The game still gets hundreds of views, and why does smb not get such attention? Simple - the game gets boring after a while which is completely understandable, since sm64 has an actual community that is doing these kinds of ABC’s and stuff. If we slowly become a similar community, we can get more people to play the game, and in the end more people will want to stream it, and then the community will keep growing. Smb has potential to beat sm64 for a few facts - less hardware requirements indeed, i do not really think that matters but yeah, the game can be run well on probably every platform (above the NES era) however the same doesnt stand for sm64, even ps2 has worse specs than n64. It cant emulate it. Through years, not a single n64 emulator for ps2 has been made. However how many emulators were made for nes for comparison.. tl;dr : a lot. Even nes emulators for symbian have seen the day (actually later versions of symbian) The next fact - smb works well with almost any controller with two buttons - it doesnt need 40 buttons like n64. Just simply two. In the end i think that making challenges for smb can make this game really popular again, that will also benefit in more speedruners count. So, gl on a button challenges. Everyone says they will do it but no one yet shared their record of minimal A presses. So, go on. Savestates allowed. Eventually infinite time hack too. Less hurry. GL

Alright then, 117 A presses is human theory, with that said go and try to beat it. The whole meaning of this thread was to someone try this challenge. We may create a abc community just like in sm64. So, go and try it out. With challenges like this we can make the game fun and great again. Atleast bit of it.

.5 means i kept the button held after jumping on bowser axe. As pannenkoek explained - a has 3 parts - when the button isnt held, when the button is held, and when the button is let off after holding it. Together they form a complete a press. So holding a button is just .5 of the whole press. That means it isnt 117 a presses, its kust 116.5

Okay so i tried again. Improved alot. Improved every single segment of the game, went for wrong warp in 4-2 however it ended up the same a button clicks as no wrong warp. The final score is 116.5 clicks (117clicks in total). I dont think this is improvable by any possible way, ive spend 1 hour at 8-2 to get that 2xa button bullet bill glitch to work, needed to go back sometimes and that koopa wasnt helping at all. Human theory is 116.5 as of now, however, if clipping into blocks is possible, it may go lower. Sub 100 is not possible at this moment and probably never will be. GL on beating this. Used savestates.
