You never know when some random YouTube guy is going to stole the runs on a non-speedrunning related channel to gain cheap views. This applies to every single game of course.

Since the fastest way to run this game is with this emulator (PSP and PS3 could be in the same category IMHO) I recommend to all the runners to show their ePSXe audio/video configuration for this game, so we can all compete in the same level!

Thank you.

When Capcom releases new shiny updated ports of RE2 and 3 on digital platforms then you'll have all the right to push new people into running ONLY on PC, until then, let people play the games on whatever the fuck they want, since they're running the SAME game and there are more differences across US/JPN versions than between actual platforms. If they ever want to switch to a faster platform for HIGH-LEVEL COMPETITION, they'll do it eventually.

If you keep bringing the same "BUT THIS OLD BAREBONES PC PORT IS FASTER AND YOU SHOULD PLAY THAT HUEHUEHUE" in every single thread people will hate (or keep hating) this community.

Call it low-entry barrier or whatever, but if there's a LOT of people asking for X category because they believe it would make sense, then they deserve to be listened to and talk about the topic at hand, not PC stuff.

The doorskip in RE2 plays like a fun minigame when you get used to it.

Spainzenix9 years ago

As far as I know PSVita and PSTV share the same kind of PS1 emulator. The PSP one is maybe slightly faster but overall there's no noticeable differences since the majority competes on PSP or PC emu.

Spainzenix9 years ago

If you can prove with specific settings/configuration for Dolphin that it is stable enough to run RE2 then I don't see why it should be a problem. Cutscene skip is a huge deal and I think it's worth looking into it.

I would encourage people to just get used to the drop-down menu to classify by platforms. If the vast majority runs on one platform I don't think an "RE-style" layout could work for the SH series.

With that being said, I think the "Free WR" appeal could attract newcomers to the scene (people who happens to own the HD Collection or the old PS2 games and doesn't want to deal with PC stuff for the moment), but at the same time cause unnecessary segmentation of the competiton.

On a serious note, if you feel people is really going to bring out the AMD/Intel to justify poor skill performances, just let it go already.

We just can't defend all the time these old Japanese PC ports that work good for some people and weird for others. If they don't like how it runs they'll go to emu or console plain and simple.

I didn't know AMD and Intel released Resident Evil 3 specific processors.

The problem with NG is that you need to do the boring forced tutorial section with Leon/Helena every time you start the game without a save. To avoid this but still having a clean save to do a New Game run we need the gamesave that we get just after finishing the mandatory tutorial.

PC

  • Make sure you have Steam Cloud activated on RE6 to keep your normal file safe (the one you use for casual runs, NG+ runs, etc), then turn Steam into offline mode.
  • Now go to "Program Files/Steam/userdata/(youraccountfolder)/221040/remote" and then delete the "savedata" inside the folder.
  • Now if you start the game on Steam with the offline mode enabled you'll start the game from scratch. Do the forced tutorial and go to the main menu to make sure you have your new save file.
  • Exit the game and go to the same folder where you deleted the savedata before, then backup the new "savedata" file.
  • Every time you finish a run or have to reset, go to said Steam folder and replace the savedata with the clean NG file you have as a backup.

WARNING: Be sure to delete the local savedata before going back to Steam online mode, so you keep the NG+ file intact.

PS3 / PS4

  • Create a new user account (or use one already created that it does not have RE6 files), start the game and do the mandatory tutorial.
  • Right after finishing the tutorial, go to the main menu of RE6 to make sure the game is saved and exit the game.
  • Copy the gamesave to another user account that you know it doesn't have any RE6 data on it (that account will keep the gamesave, don't use it to load that save so you keep it clean for your main account for NG runs).
  • When you finish your NG run or you have to reset, exit the game, delete the savedata from the account you're using to play your NG run and get the copy of the clean save from the other account.

As I said I could fix the game fps issues BUT... as soon as I open OBS the game goes back to run like shit ;_;

I stream at 720p / 3k bitrate, that and OBS being CPU heavy is probably leaving RE3 with nothing seeing how these old games are not optimized at all for multiple cores / high memory. On the other hand RE2 seems to run 99% of the time as it should (sometimes it runs in "PAL mode"). Curious enough I never had fps issues with RE3 Sourcenext (2006 release).

This case reminds me of Final Fantasy VII on PC, the slower your PC is the better the game is going to perform, but that is timed by RTA so it's a whole different matter.

Spainzenix10 years ago

Well I was going to ask the same as Robercigg, that RGB emulation thing was destroying the fps so ty Furry. Now the game runs perfect and I can finally uninstall the shitty Sourcenext.

Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit CPU: AMD FX 8320 3.50 GHz 8GB RAM GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 2GB

I barely run RE3 mainly because I still use the scrub Sourcenext version (I know right?) and I'm clueless about making Mediakite work as intended on my PC. There's a step-by-step installation guide somewhere?

Multiple full-game leaderboards will make these boards look perfect. I hope they introduce that soon.

Spainzenix10 years ago

My theory is that the PS version, no matter the platform you play, is flawed. Probably left unpolished to cater the original release date. The fastest loading times seen on PSP and some emus proofs that there's just something off with the game when you're playing on an actual disc (or emulating disc loadings like PS3 does).

Spainzenix10 years ago

Not an active runner of RE3 but after seeing Wolf taking a PS1/PS2 record with the infamous PSN version, it's indeed clear that makes sense to merge it, but not for the same reasons as RE2 of course.

Spainzenix10 years ago

Running PSN/PS3, while being official and affordable for everyone with said hardware, has always been a comfort zone category for PS1 games, and I understand the decision to merge it with the rest of PS1 disc versions for the sake of competition. Even if it's "official" and "legit" to play a PSN version on PS3, I rather stick to emu or PC versions, which are obviously free and accessible for everyone.

Personally I would LOVE to play the JPN PS1 version on PS2 (as a matter of fact I have the original JPN Bio1 sitting on the shelf, acting more like a collector's item rather than a speedgame as of now), but I want to know what exactly I need to softmod my PAL PS2 in order to play the Japanese releases (which are ridiculously cheap, but no the console itself sadly).

About N64 and DC, I would keep them because after all it's an official console release. Same reason Sega Saturn category exists on RE1.

Spainzenix10 years ago

This game is quite inactive but still I wanted to arrange the leaderboards to be clearer.

Coop runs take priority on the board since it's where the real competition lives and makes the game extremely faster over solo.

Now New Game+ is every run you start with your common save file (upgraded skills or infinite ammo). Not using infinite ammo in this game is NOT reason enough to call it NG because the upgraded skills are overpowered and having some of the best skills maxed out it's pretty much a NG+ element.

If you want to do a "No Skill" run the best way to do that is running No Hope difficulty since there are no skill sets there to begin with.

If you want to run New Game, delete the save files or use another account if you use a console to run the game (if you know the RE5 way to do this, it might be the same procedure). I'm not 100% sure if you're forced to repeat the tutorial with Leon/Helena but the ideal would be to keep the save right after that tutorial just for the run, so you have the choice to choose any campaign with clean inventory/skills.

Hope you like the changes and we eventually see more people running this. After all, NG+ is the fastest/most convenient way to play this.

If you have tips or concerns about these changes this is the place to discuss it. Thank you.

7k vs 9k PS2s debate regarding loading times using FDS happens a lot in some other communites where running the disc PS1 version is the only way to go or really popular. I won't be surprised if this has something to do with an specific PS2 model.

Spainzenix10 years ago

Other than some graphical/sound glitches on certain areas, PSXfin 1.13 emulates RE2/3 really welll gameplay-wise, and it's a simple, non modular emu like PSXjin.
