Doesn't fraps record in enormous file sizes?

I think you should be able to cut it down by a lot, just google for it and upload a much smaller file.

I understand you want high resources for fastest run. But since we can set dark age, why not just standard resources either, more interesting with bit longer time to set up eco and possibilities to make a difference.

You can just answer in the first thread you made, but a few points

Wonder race is interesting setting since you win without beating your enemy, makes it suitable for speedrun.

  • use ingame timer This allows pausing etc and doesn't make it a real speedrun, it is fun for challenges etc but defeats speedrun purpose

  • random map Basically makes everyone pick map with best food - yucatan. Not sure how great random map is, but creating a map for a speedrun makes it a strange setting aswell, will end up with resetting for map rng

  • normal visibility Just make it explored, no need for normal visibility you can scout the map and restart to know where resources are anyway.

  • normal resource Standard resources is indeed basic setting

  • map size / amount of players I would say no interaction with other players (or their resources?), prob just tiny map vs bot on easiest.

I was trying some El Cid 5 on HD version, it start like this

The gate never opens, AI barely does anything. I got some bugged version.

Anyone knows how to fix? I don't want to beat this level easily because of this bug.

Edit: Chazzy just did a run on the bugged campaign, guess I'll see whether it is legit. Oke, got contact with developer, missions can be bugged since patch 4.0, atleast this one is. Can prevent by playing 3.9. Or just use this bugged version for IL timing.

To go back to earlier patch:

  1. Go to your games library on Steam, and right click AoE2HD.

  2. Select "Properties" from the dropdown that appears.

  3. Click the tab called "Betas" in the window that pops up.

  4. Select "Archive3.9" from the dropdown of beta programs you can opt into.

  5. Let it download, and then launch AoE2HD once the download is finished. You should then be on 3.9

I can't figure out to record it.

Recording it with OBS and administrator access on everything just shows the game black on the stream.

I mainly want to show improved route (or just approach) for Ninevev to get the last part done much quicker/consistently.

What is this all about?

If you are talking about the speedruns, the game is basically build up with campaigns which consist multiple scenarios. It is not really one continious game in single player.

The game is mainly run at the moment by beating each individual scenario as fast as possible. Many levels are quite tricky and we fail more often than that we get the strat perfectly done, partially because of RNG

Maybe more full campaign/game runs later, but first every level has to be routed and needs a strategy that can be done consistently.

If you want to start running, either pick a level you like and go for it, or watch already recorded runs and find their weaknesses and improve them.

We can also just create a standard map for the race with standard resources, to have it completely fair. But that removes the scouting part of the game. Don't think that really matters.

Would be a nice category.

Just set it to some land map with standard 8 sheep, 2 boar, and deer patch (would say arena is the best)

All the other settings just standard, tiny map with 1 computer enemy and not allowed to steal resources from the enemy and on either normal/explored/visible vision, exclude relics

The map arena is quite equal and fair with resources and distance towards them. Since your lure boar/deer with a scout in this case, that distance doesn't matter.

Age of Empires Series are great for it, it are basically all individual levels anyway without something going through from 1 to the other.

The monk glitch was used by some chinese players on a tournament (probably that 2012 thread) and I tried to get it working myself from the recording.

Saw it on video from ZeroEmpires. . Besides that you got the insta building bug, which basically works if you instantly put workers back to work when they are tasked to walk away after being hit by something. Haven't tried to use it, is probably hard to pull of and unless some levels require a lot of building not that helpful.

Also saw this one . No clue how that works.

I assume they are fixed on HD (atleast should be), though the speedruns are on 1.0c version of original game in which most glitches are in before they were removed with userpatches.

The 1.0c had multiple glitches which were patched out later in the userpatch for competitive play. Some are still in (palisade scouting for example I used in JoA2).

In my opinion it is more fun/challenging to not allow these, though they could easily allow much faster times on certain levels (Easily take a minute of Horns of Hattin).

I noticed many speedruns have limits or seperated settings for glitches, though that is not something we need for this game.

EDIT: nvm, it was on standard. On side note, is it possible to see difficulty on screen while running like with non HD

Ran agincourt on HD, 2nd try beating the record.

Either lucky now to run it better or HD is faster. Maybe the difference between 20fps/60fps that makes these maps about pathing easier?

I'm pretty sure you did it wrong.

I got 4:59 on it when running it on stream quickly, HD might be even faster, feels much smoother, but I might be fooled because graphics are better. Things like going through gates when enemy units run in goes smooth, while it feels clumsy on non HD version.

Edit: I failed hard didn't set the frame for HD, black screen run on stream. Trying again.

In Montezuma 4 the castle shoots at you on hard difficulty. I think you are mistaken by the run barbarossa did on AGDQ? He did his run on standard difficulty, on which indeed the aggro range is lower.

AoK and AoC has some differences, but it as far as I can tell AoC/HD are the same, besides a slightly slower input lag on HD (though shouldn't make difference in runs)

Could you list a few changes of AI/levels that you can't pull of anymore? (or link somewhere you found that)

Standard difficulty allows you to simply walk into an enemy base with villagers without taking aggro, removes most micro in those levels and is just about building that siege workshop/tower.

I guess should have atleast hard difficulty runs as some standard, but if HD AI is that different it can cause some problems.

Why is every difficulty setting allowed in full campaign runs. William Wallace is obviously in standard, but why isn't the rest only Hard mode?

Purely timings based standard is the fastest, but also the least challenging, since with the low aggro range you can basically run past everything.

pussy wood and gridlines are the ones most helpful. I'm currently not using them, but was wondering if it is allowed.

Should be fine without them though.

Just to be sure.

Are visual mods allowed? They don't change the gameplay itself but it can make certain things easier or make it more visually appealing.
