Generally speaking, if a run doesn't specifically allow the timer to be paused during the run for some reason (like loading screens), you can't pause the timer until the run is finished. As ShikenNuggets said, very few games will allow the runner to stop and take a break with the timer paused, so unless it specifically states as much in the category rules, you should assume it's not allowed.

Also just to mention - specific questions about category/timing rules for GTA 5 should be asked in the forum for that game. The moderators for that game are the ones who decide the rules, so they're the only people who can give you an "official" answer.

Meet Velocity Voyage: https://www.speedrun.com/Velocity_Voyage

I'm recommending it for two reasons:

  • I made the game, and I'm pretty proud of it; and
  • It has been very well received by the people who have ran it so far - its gotten pretty competitive. And I'd love to see the current WRs challenged some more
Newfoundland, CanadaGoober1 year ago

The answer to this question would depend entirely on the rules in place for the categories you're considering running, and no one will be able to answer except the moderators for those games.

For games I moderate (which do not include either Geometry Dash or Minecraft, for the record), I typically don't require a visible timer. The exception would be runs in WR contention for games where LRT (load removed time) is used for scoring (like Red Faction on PC, as an example). The reason for that is that while technically calculating LRT without using LiveSplit is possible, it's extremely onerous and prone to error.

I'd encourage you to reach out to the moderators of those games to confirm their requirements for submissions - they are the ones that would be approving (or denying) your submission, and they're the only people who can give you an accurate answer as to how they would handle it.

There's a VERY small spot where you can click through the phone and grab the key, it's a little tricky but if you watch closely you can see me trying to find the spot before I get the key.

If you're interested in chatting about strats, I'd encourage you to drop by the Discord by the way :) Discord link is at the top of the game page.

I distinctly remember Site Staff saying something along the lines of they don't want to give communities and individuals advantages for paying for supporter over someone who isn't paying.

I understand this and generally would agree - doing something like only having board features available for boosted games (ala Discord Nitro) would be something I'd definitely not be in favor of. I see what I've suggested differently though, in that all it would be doing is increasing visibility. It's a way to "signal boost" a game that is perhaps lesser-known, and not at the expense of any other game. It would truly give users the ability to give their favorite games a "boost," which is a much more attractive prospect, I think, than in effect granting a game's players a more limited and temporary version of the features offered by free browser extensions.

I see this approach as assisting with two distinctly separate and otherwise unrelated goals:

  1. Empower users to directly support their favorite games in a way that could greatly benefit those games and their respective speedrun communities (which is very much aligned with the site's vision and stated purpose); and
  2. Make Supporter subscriptions more enticing.

Both goals are entirely valid and reasonable, in my view at least.

Tying a one time payment that permanently disables monetization to a service with ongoing maintenance/server costs does not make for a sustainable business.

Entirely agree here - a one-time payment wouldn't be suitable for something like this. Giving people the ability to bulk purchase monthly Supporter subscriptions via lump sum (like the existing option to purchase them annually), sure, but a one-time payment for a permanent status wouldn't make sense as a support mechanism for a service where reoccurring operational costs would account for virtually all expenses.

So, to be frank - when I was considering subscribing to Supporter, I debated it for quite a while. I ultimately decided to do it because I really want to support the staff and the development of the site, but to be honest the benefits of Supporter didn't entice me much. The animated name is pretty neat and I appreciate having this forum to communicate with you folks, but apart from that, I really only subscribed because I wanted to support you. This brings me to the point of this post - how can Supporter be more enticing without paywalling useful features (which is a practice I certainly wouldn't support)? I think at least part of the answer lies in boosts.

The ability to boost games exists, which is fantastic. As far as I can tell though, boosting a game functionally does nothing except remove ads for some of that game's users for a month. This presents a few issues in my view:

  1. Most people are probably using an ad blocker anyway (and if not, they probably should be). When the single benefit provided by boosts can be obtained in a more complete way (ie. applies when you're not yet logged in) by a free browser extension, I think the value proposition is pretty low.
  2. The concept of "boosting" a game translating to "some people don't see ads" doesn't really... work, linguistically (in my opinion, anyway). "Boosting" inherently conveys the game itself (ie. it's board) is benefitting in some way.
  3. Runners and moderators for games care about those games and their boards (and subsequently, their runs) being more visible, and they care about that WAY more than they care about whether a few people see ads or not.

So, here are my two ideas on how to solve those issues and make Supporter subscriptions more enticing:

  • On the main Games list page, shift the "Popular new games" panel on the right side down, and put "Most boosted games" above it. Reduce both panels to top 5 (rather than top 8) so both "Most boosted games" and "Popular new games" are visible on most standard monitor resolutions. "Games from X (Year)" and "Games on X (Platform)" could be below "Popular new games". I did a quick mockup of what this would look like, click here to see that: [Click]
  • Similar to the "Supporter" badge for users, add a "Boosted" badge for games, which appears before that game's name on its dedicated board page, and everywhere else it's referred to (on the main Games list page, etc.) Similarly to the user badge, this could by default be the boost skateboard icon, but the game's moderators could customize it with an icon specific to that game if they chose to.

(You could also keep the current ad suppressing boost functionality in addition if you wanted, no harm in that.)

Anywho, just food for thought :) I think this could be a very easy way to both make "Supporter" more enticing and empower community members more directly to "boost" their favorite games, in the most literal sense of the term (ie. increase their visibility).

That's super cool! Great work, thanks for sharing! :)

If you're interested in chatting about Zortch speedrunning further, I'd definitely encourage you to join our Discord - that's where discussion about running the game takes place, and we'd be able to help eachother with routing and hunting for strategies. Here's an invite to the Discord: https://discord.gg/KeuAPnQ

We also support a ton of other games on the same Discord, so you might also find others that are of interest to you :)

Hey folks, just wanted to send a shout out to the staff and admins of the site - you've been doing absolutely fantastic work since the acquisition, especially with the site overhaul. I know it was an enormous undertaking, and I'm keenly aware that major changes like that are never simple and never without unforeseen hurdles. Your efficient and effective handling of it all has been and continues to be commendable, great job!

Not to malign the previous staff/ownership in any way, but the improvements, growth, and overall evolution of the site since the acquisition have been incredible to witness. It's clear the site we all love so much is in very good and capable hands.

I figured I'd sign up for supporter to show my appreciation for the staff and admins that make this place such a great spot to be. Thank you for everything you do!

Anyway, I didn't really have anything else to say, just wanted to say thanks. You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Hey there :)

Yes it is. Admittedly, things are a little confusing for this game since the most current itch.io release (v0.0421) is not labeled as a demo. It's simply labeled as the latest build of the game, but appears to contain identical content to what was released as a demo on Steam.

Assuming a more feature-complete version of the game is eventually released on Steam (and/or itch.io) which contains a longer campaign (which I am expecting eventually), my plan is to at that point rename the current "Any%" category to "Any% Demo" and create a new "Any%" category for the full release. As is, I've seen no reason the itch.io "latest release" and Steam "demo" shouldn't be scored against each other, since they contain what appears to be the same content - the difference between versions however is tracked via the "Game Version" annotation.

I will make a note in the category rules to hopefully clarify this for anyone who may have the same question.

Thanks!

Slight change of plan - deprecating old categories wasn't really necessary, but note that the remake is required for new runs.

Additionally, new runs must begin with clicking "Clear Level Data".
