Yeah, I only learned about it when researching the speedrun lol. I was honestly hoping it would be faster than resting over and over, but it's a few seconds slower.

Yeah, materials are pretty fast to get. It's only a few seconds slower to do a simple exploration instead of resting for the day.

Is it just to get any of the 100 endings asap from a pre-existing save? Or is it for specific endings?

The best part of meme runs is that there's minimal competition lol. I don't run melt% because I'm good at the game, I do it cause nobody else would dare challenge me, not even Ciuava (that isn't a challenge Ciuava please let me have that one category please please please!)
