# Hello! 👋

First of all, thank you for your interest in Splinter Cell Speedrunning! In this guide, you will find a link to my YouTube tutorial series for this game's Any% v1 speedrun!

🖥️ Enabling projector shadows

# Hi there!

This guide will detail how to enable projector shadows on Splinter Cell. This guide is only aimed at PC runners.

## Why projector shadows?

According to PCGamingWiki,

> Relying on a now-obsolete feature of Nvidia GPUs, the default "buffer" shadows are broken on modern hardware."

For the most part, this causes no trouble when playing the game. However, there are some crucial details that buffer shadow mode doesn't display, like the searchlight radius on the ground in levels like Abattoir and Presidential Palace. Such things are of upmost importance to us speedrunners.

### *As an alternative, use the Widescreen Patch by ThirteenAG - it works in conjunction with dgVoodoo 2 to emulate the buffer shadow mode on modern hardware.*

## Enabling projector shadows

### The easy way

The fastest way is to simply add this launch argument:

`-shadowmode=projector`



However, if for some reason this does not work, here's a more detailed guide on how to set the game to "projector shadows".



### 1. Go to your game's directory

### 2. Open "system" folder

### 3. Open & edit "SplinterCell.ini" file

This is usually located right under the .exe file of the game. Feel free to open it in your favorite text editing software.

### 4. Find "ForceShadowMode" and set it to 0.

Scroll down or use CTRL+F to find "ForceShadowMode". By default, this value should be set to 1. Please note, if you're using the Widescreen Patch, it will force it to be on 1, but as mentioned above, this shouldn't concern you when using the patch. However, if you'd still like to force it on 0 **with** Widescreen patch, make sure to set the .ini file to be **read-only**.

Also make note of the comment above the "ForceShadowMode" line, it details what each value means.

### 5. You're all set!

To test if projector shadows have been enabled, the fastest way is to load up Abattoir or Presidential Palace. If you can see the searchlights on the ground, that means you've enabled them successfully. Keep in mind, different shadow render mode can cause different behavior, **but this has not yet been definitively proved**, and the only *anecdotal* occurrence is one guard's body being detected in Defense Ministry.

Black Screen Fix

Here's a video detailing a fix I found a few weeks ago for fixing the resolution changes caused by cutscenes in this game, as well as strange screen issues in Chaos Theory.

How to make the game functional in 1600x1200

Part 1

- download the widescreen fix from https://github.com/ThirteenAG/WidescreenFixesPack/releases/tag/sc
- extract SplinterCell.WidescreenFix
- copy/paste the 4 items inside system folder (scripts, dgvoodoo, msacm32.dll, msvfw32.dll) into your SC installation's system folder (for steam - program files (x86) -> steam -> steamapps -> common -> splinter cell -> system)
- open the scripts folder in your SC installation's system folder, open SplinterCell.WidescreenFix (configuration file)
- change ResX to 1600 and ResY to 1200, HudWideScreenMode = 0
- save changes, go to properties of the configuration file and change to read-only, click ok
- there will be a mod update popup when starting the game for the first time. This has to be done to fix shadows/spotlights. You can tell if shadows are fixed if the first door opening in the first cutscene of training casts light onto the left wall.
- if there is a small delay before videos start playing, changing monitor resolution to 1600x1200 should fix it

Part 2 (only required if the autoupdater failed/crashed, shadows aren't fixed or OBS has trouble picking up the game after mission start videos).

- download dgVoodoo buffer shadows fix from http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2.html
- copy/paste d3d8.dll (can be found in MS folder -> x86), dgvoodoo.conf and dgVoodooCpl into the system folder of your SC installation.
- start dgVoodooCpl
- DirectX tab: set videocard as GeForce4 Ti 4800, disable application controlled fullscreen and dgVoodoo watermark. Apply changes.
- General tab: click on the dot+backward slash button (.\) to select your SC game folder if it's not chosen already, for adapter choose your graphics card. Enable windowed mode and change scaling mode to centered. Apply changes.
- open dgVoodoo.conf with notepad and go to GeneralExt section. On WindowedAttributes line write Borderless, FullscreenSize

Windowed mode removes white flickering when spamming through cutscenes and should remove all issues with OBS. The only problem it causes is game becoming unresponsive if mission start videos aren't left-click skipped within the first 3-4 seconds. Videos can still be skipped from any point with enter. Also the videos before main menu and end credits are unskippable with left click. The workaround for this is to go to videos folder and remove credits.bik, Logos.bik and videointro.bik since they aren't part of the speedrun anyway.

# Screw Windows, join the dark side!

The only thing that was keeping me on Windows was gaming, but Steam Proton allows us to run Windows games with ease on Linux.

# Run Splinter Cell on Linux using Steam Proton

Right click on Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and click properties. Then navigate to the Compatibility menu, and check this option (above). Proton Experimental is working for me as of January 2025.

# How To Make LiveSplit AutoSplitters Work

I followed this guide to get me going:

In short, you will need to run LiveSplit in the same context as Splinter Cell by using protontricks, so you will need to [install that](https://simpler-website.pages.dev/html/2021/1/protontricks/).

Then you will have to create a .json file with all of LiveSplit's DLLs. I will post my current file which is working as of now, but in the future, more DLLs may be added or removed. So if this does not work, follow the video guide above.

Then modify your Splinter Cell launch options to include these DLLs like so:

Now you should be able to launch LiveSplit in the same context as Splinter Cell. Here is a shell script I wrote, but you can just type the command if desired.

Remember to replace the /home/matt/... with the actual path to your LiveSplit installation. Running this shell script should open LiveSplit in the same Proton context as Splinter Cell, allowing the auto-splitter to work.

After creating that shell script, all you have to do is to launch Splinter Cell from Steam, then run the shell script to launch LiveSplit . The auto-splitter should be working if configured!

# Notes:

- It has not been explicitly determined that runs on Steam Proton are valid yet. Your run is subject to verification and may be denied if Proton is found to run the game differently than natively on Windows.
- This speedrun involves tricks that require a high FPS, (over 100fps). The only way I found to get Splinter Cell to run at maximum FPS was to run in fullscreen. I uninstalled the widescreen fix so that I could have some extra real estate on my UltraWide monitor reserved just for LiveSplit, which I configured to stay on top of the game window.
- For whatever reason, the autosplitter stops working when using the "Detailed Timer" widget in your layout.

SC1 v1 Manual Retiming Guide

# Hello friends!

This guide will point you to 2 prepared documents detailing the guidelines of performing manual retiming on your runs. For lower place runs this is absolutely optional, as LiveSplit is pretty accurate when it comes to these things already. However, for top-tier competitive time runs, manual retiming is appreciated from the runners to ensure that their time is as accurate as possible. It's a good practice to have, and ensures you are also in control of your own run times, because you'll be able to always double check your stuff!
