150cc Weathertenko Tutorial

# How to do a weathertenko in 150cc using the new setup with pause buffer

I highly recommend using the [OverKart 64 ROM](https://www.mediafire.com/file/rttkfvfolz5nlyk/OverKart4+DLC+Pak.zip/file) with the practice mode to learn and practice weathertenko, its super easy to use the savestates so its ideal to work on the skip.

## 1. Get mushrooms

Pretty obvious. Just go get the item box further up the track, trigger on 5 or 6th place for better chance to get them and go back to the finish line.

## 2. Position yourself

The position is pretty precise to setup, you need to be on the exact position for the trick to work, otherwise it will fail even tho you got the following steps right.

Once you get mushrooms, go just a little bit further the finish line. Aim for the dark brown line on the mountain to the right just like the image bellow

Get close to the line, align the kart perfectly close to the mountain so the right wheel doesn't clip inside of it.

After that, position your kart just barely over the tiny **light brown patch** (green rectangle) on the ground just like the image. To help you find it, you can look for the **tiny black patch** (red circle) right next to the end of the line.

## 3. Aim at the mountain

After setting up yourself, you just have to turn to face the mountain on the left side of the track. Use Jump to turn instead of A+B turn, otherwise it will ruin your position.

Once you are facing the mountain, aim for that **black patch** (green circle), it is quite easy to recognize because it's the biggest black patch in that area of the texture and try to get your kart aligned to it

## 4. Pause buffer and switch input

Now here is hardest part: you have to pause on the **frame right before hitting the wall**.

Simply press Z to use a mushroom without holding A or any other input. Pause at the right frame and then **HOLD straight LEFT and R**. Unpause while still holding left and R and if you did everything correctly, weathertenko should be guarantee.

You have to get a feel for it. Overall, Weathertenko with the setup is easy in a way but still hard to execute consistently. It is definitively easier than no setup at all and not recommended for begginers.

## Practice codes (GameShark codes)

[Here](https://pastebin.com/wkidXU4Y) is a list of all the useful codes recommended for practice. You can use them on emulator, EverDrive and GameShark.

⚠️ Please note that these cheat codes are quite **unstable** on every platform and can cause crashes/glitches if they are all enable at the same time in most cases.

Here is how to install practice codes on emulator: In this case, i will use **Rosalie's Mupen GUI v0.5.x+**. Launch the game and go to System -> Cheats... -> Add and then put the codes of your choice.

Make sure your ROM and all your codes are from the **same game region and version**.

Don't forget to check the controller binds on the practice codes list, they are at the bottom of each codes.

If you want to use them on console, I recommend the **Restart Race** and the **Race Warp** codes. These two codes are short enough to be on an EverDrive or a GameShark, they are the most stables and useful ones. Here is an example of what it should look like on a EverDrive:

Then in game, press C-Down to restart the race. Hold D-pad Up/Right/Down/Left then press C-Down to warp to the track of your choice like the gif bellow:

## OverKart 64 v4

The modding community made a romhack called **OverKart 64**. This romhack includes a practice mode.

⚠️ Please note that OverKart 64 is build on the **NTSC** (US) and the **PAL** (EU) version of the game. It will not be possible to practice specific skips on this romhack. (Check out [abney's 150cc Skips Guide](https://beckabney.com/mk64/basicskips.html) to see japanese exclusive skips). The practice mode is **only available on the version 4.**

The practice mode includes savestates ! I highly recommend using this romhack to practice your driving skills on non-shortcut tracks and skips that are possible on the US version of the game. For example: KD red shells & star skip, WS jumps, YV shrooms etc...

Here is the list of the controller binds, make sure to enable the practice rom on the menu:

- D-pad left: Save
- D-pad right: Load
- D-pad up: Restart Race
- C-Left (hold): Fly

You can also practice the track of your choice by making your own cup. You can select individual tracks in the order of your choice so if you wanna practice Kalimari Desert only for example, you can put it on top of the list of any cups.

## Conclusion

Both practice codes and ROM are great. I recommend having them setup/installed so you can practice whatever you need/want easily. You can pretty much practice everything, you will just have to figure out which method is adequate depending of what you want to do.

Tips

• Hold start while mashing A to speed up points screen between tracks		
• Triple tap A for fast acceleration if you get slowed down
• Use mushrooms to cut across grass and sand areas where you can		
• Use mushrooms while drifting		
• Set Counter Factor to 1 if using Project 64 in Options > Settings > Rom Settings
