Avoiding Manannan on the pirate ship

Since Any% speedruns skip turning Manannan into a cat, they must avoid getting zapped by him on the pirate ship. There are several things that make this possible: 1) Manannan won't appear if you're carrying the box; 2) Manannan will take some time to appear if you switch screens; 3) he won't appear at all in the small outdoor area at the stern of the ship, to the left of the captain's cabin. 

If you waited for Manannan to leave on a journey, an additional rule applies: once you board the ship, Manannan won't appear until the seconds on the game clock show "04 (after the first "04 on the ship he can appear at any time). This makes it easy to dodge Manannan just by boarding the ship at a good time; for example, if you board the ship with the game clock at 0:10:05 you have a whopping 59 seconds to get the box, drop it in place, jump up, climb the ladder, open the chest, get back your stolen possessions and head into the safety of the stern without needing to worry about Manannan at all. Even in less favorable circumstances, though, it is possible to reliably avoid Manannan; this is accomplished as follows:

1) Zip to the eastern part of the hold (a screen switch) at Fastest speed, and then get the box as quickly as possible. (From your starting point in the hold, one possible series of zips is 926724 GET BOX.) Manannan will not bother you while you're carrying the box, so you have some time for a deep breath.
2) Zip back to the western part of the hold (84), take the aforementioned deep breath and prepare your next command (DROP BOX) without hitting Enter yet. (Waiting in the eastern part of the hold is an entirely valid alternative; but waiting in the west may help with getting oriented, since that is where the action will happen.)
3) Be ready for quick action. Switch screens twice (64) as quickly as possible to buy some time, then immediately follow with 
26 DROP BOX [] JUMP F3 [] F3 [] JUMP LADDER [] F10 (this switches to Fast speed - you cannot climb the ladder in Fastest), then 8 to climb up the ladder. If the captain is in his cabin, climb back down and up until the cabin is empty.
4) Save here, in case of a bad ladder exit. Carefully leave the ladder, then switch back to Fastest and make a dash for the stern. Ignore the chest for now. One possible way to zip to safety is 49271.
5) Take another deep breath, prepare your next command (OPEN CHEST) and be ready for quick action again.
6) 6272 OPEN CHEST [] GET ALL [] 79271. You can now wait out the rest of the 14-minute journey without worrying about either the pirates or Manannan.

Configuring DosBOX for max cycles and various options

[IMPORTANT]
If you have the GOG or Steam distribution of the games, then that will be where your copy of King's Quest 3 is located. Refer to the post in the "Forum" tab of this page for an explanation as to why we do NOT use them for speedrunning.

Downloading DosBox:
Download DosBox Enhanced Community Edition => https://dosboxece.yesterplay.net/
Scroll down and download the "DOSBox ECE rxxxx.7z" (x is the current version number) file
Unzip to a location of your choosing. Launch DOSBox.exe once and close it.

Configuring DoxBox:
Navigate to C:\users\<username>\appdata\DosBox (username is your Windows username) and open dosbox-ece.conf with a program like notepad++.

From top to bottom of the configuration file make these following changes (use CTRL+F to find them):

Under [SDL]
fullscreen = false (change to true if you want to play in fullscreen)
fullresolution = desktop (if you are playing in fullscreen and want the game to fit your desktop's resolution)
windowresolution = x (X is something that can fit on your monitor and is smaller than it's resolution)

Note: as mentioned above the files for the GOG and Steam distributions of the game will be located in their respective folders. You may need to search around for them, but most commonly GOG will be at: C:\GOG Games\ and Steam will be under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common and in the King's Quest Collection folder. As said: please look for these files yourself as I do not own these two distributions and cannot verify their exact default installation locations).

Launch DosBox ECE and type kq1 to launch King's Quest III

Doge% new route

This route assumes the game is run in DOSBox at high cycles (or natively on a fast PC), allowing zipping at Fastest speed. Prepare the first command, "open door" (or "open closet"), and the ideal menu position (selecting Fastest speed) before restarting the game.

Commands are given in uppercase for clarity, but need not be typed in uppercase. Fastest speed should be selected by pressing Esc followed by Enter.

The next sequence depends on which of three random positions you get dropped in. 
If you appear in the western part of the screen, follow with 2936868 OPEN DOOR. If you appear in the middle, follow with 2926868 OPEN DOOR. If you appear in the east, follow with 634245 OPEN DOOR. The eastern RNG is preferable; not only does it save one keystroke, it also avoids an RNG encounter with the bears.

Finish by preparing "PET DOG", then 417 and press Enter at least twice. (Note that the storekeeper will greet you shortly after you enter the shop. With perfect timing you can pet the dog before being greeted; but if you are slow or unlucky with the framerule, you'll have to dispel the greeting with the first Enter before finishing the run with the second Enter.)

In case of bad bear RNG, dismiss the bear message, hit the previous direction again, and then continue the expected sequence; e.g. 293[Enter]36868 OPEN DOOR 417 PET DOG.

Doge% old route

This route assumes the game is run in DOSBox at high cycles (or natively on a fast PC), allowing zipping at Fastest speed.  Prepare the first command, "find on closet", and the ideal menu position (selecting Fastest speed) before restarting the game. 

There are five locations where Gwydion can be killed by bad RNG (plus several opportunities for really unfortunate cat placement to ruin the run). Due to the short length of the run, avoiding saves and simply hoping for the best is recommended.

Commands are given in uppercase for clarity, but need not be typed in uppercase. Fastest speed should be selected by pressing Esc followed by Enter.

Original Any% wait skip route

This route assumes the game is run in DOSBox at high cycles (or on a fast PC), allowing zipping at Fastest speed. It skips the expected five-minute wait at the beginning of the game and also skips turning Manannan into a cat, instead relying on the fact that after each screen transition it will take 8 seconds for Manannan to appear and zap Gwydion into oblivion. At several points (such as the shop and in Manannan's laboratory) the route cuts this safety margin very thin, and may therefore need to be slightly modified if your typing speed is slower than expected. (There are several safe spaces where Manannan will never appear; these include the screen with the chickens, the screen with the bears, the screen with the bandits' tree, the outdoor area at the stern of the pirate ship, and all of Daventry.)

At some point very early in the run, you should locate the cat, temporarily switch to Fast with F10, GET CAT and GET FUR. Successfully picking up the cat may require several attempts. Because the cat's appearances are entirely random, the route is somewhat opportunistic: if you notice the cat, go for it.

It skips the expected five-minute wait at the beginning of the game and also skips turning Manannan into a cat, instead relying on the fact that after each screen transition it will take 8 seconds for Manannan to appear and zap Gwydion into oblivion. (There are several safe spaces where Manannan will never appear; these include the screen with the chickens, the screen with the bears, the screen with the bandits' tree, the outdoor area at the stern of the pirate ship, and all of Daventry.)

At several points, F1 is used to bring up the help menu and re-enable the command line. This allows teleportationless invisibility skip, and is also used to prepare commands.

Safety save points are indicated before major RNG spots, especially potential random deaths. All of these are skippable if you wish to YOLO the run. Additional safety saves may be added before spellcasting if you fear a typo or missed command.

At some point very early in the run, you should locate the cat, temporarily switch to Fast with F10, GET CAT and F3 FUR. Successfully picking up the cat may require several attempts. Because the cat's appearances are entirely random, the route is somewhat opportunistic: if you notice the cat, go for it.

Before the run, you should create a save named "%v184". This savename will be used for all saves during the run.

For DOSBox users, setting the configuration to core=dynamic and machine=tandy is recommended for maximum performance.

*[there are three main strategies you can use to deal with the snowman. 
The recommended strategy is to prepare "EAGLE BEGONE ME ADD" before the "Land ho!" message, safety-save after pressing 9, repeatedly hit Enter, and restore if you died to the snowman. This is fast, and has a ~75% chance of working.
The extreme YOLO strategy is to prepare "EAT PATTY" before the "Land ho!" message, hit 9, hit 3, and pray. This is even faster if it works, but has a much higher probability of death.
The safe (but slow) strategy is to prepare "EAT PATTY" before the "Land ho!" message, hit 9, hit F10, fly towards the snowman, hit 3 after confusing it, and switch back to Fastest.]*
