Making videos more accessible

Hi so I don’t expect it to happen but I will ask so I may someday be able to post speed runs since my mom won’t let me be a YouTuber, PLEASE mods of the site, owner of the site, somebody make it where you don’t need a link to post videos. I use my phone’s camera to take my speedruns, and I can’t post them because there’s nowhere for the cameras videos, only pictures. Plus videos by the phone camera without a site are harder to edit, especially with big fingers like mine, making it more believable then a harshly edited video on YouTube or something. I understand not all videos are edited, that’s not what I’m on about, I just want to post my runs, so please let us post videos from the camera/photos app. Please.

Not gonna happen. Video storage gets insanely expensive very fast, there is no world where speedrun.com could realistically offer this even if they wanted to.

Ok then, but for context this means that the system is making it where people without social media are basically getting told “Oh yeah no you can’t post any runs or helpful content that requires video because you do not have YouTube, Twitch, or anything else a mom wouldn’t let a teen do”. I’m not here to start an argument, I don’t see where videos would cost money, but ok and thank you for at least looking at my post. Thank you.

Really thank you for at least looking into it

You're making it sound like speedrun.com is choosing to make your situation complicated on purpose. It is not. I cannot state this more clearly; they simply cannot do what you are asking for. It'd be great if they could, but this is just how things are and there's nothing that anyone can do about that.

anything else a mom wouldn’t let a teen do

Honestly even if it was an option I don't really see why your mom would be okay with you uploading a video here directly and not uploading an unlisted video to YouTube that's only linked here, it'd basically be the same thing. In any case, you either have to sort this out with her or just wait until you can make your own decisions. That's really all there is to this.

I don’t see where videos would cost money

Everything costs money. The cloud isn't magic, it's just somebody else's computer. Videos would have to be stored on a server somewhere, and it costs money to run that server. YouTube and Twitch can eat the storage cost because they're run by trillion dollar companies that already operate mass data storage for other aspects of their business (though even Twitch severely limits how much you can store now), and in YouTube's case the service itself is profitable. speedrun.com is run by a very small company with a relatively small userbase (YouTube has 50x more users every day than speedrun.com has total), meaning relatively small opportunity for profit from videos, so comparing the data storage cost to the potential benefit for them this whole idea is unfortunately just nonsense.

Mm ok. Thank you for looking at this though. Also if I came across mean I didn’t mean to, so if I did I’m sorry, when I wrote that message I didn’t see how it would come across mean but I do now, so sorry about that.

The server costs required for video storage are very expensive and difficult to

I've seen videos shared on google drive for submissions. You could always consider that as an alternative to upload the video to.

@sYn not really because both Google Drive and YouTube require a Google account.

Unless @MrPokemonFan777 is allowed a Google account, they just can't create a YouTube profile or upload any videos to it.

Also why would having a YouTube profile not be allowed when uploading to a YouTube competitor basically has the same effect as uploading onto YouTube lol. Like YouTube or not, you're still creating videos and having them online.

I think you should be allowed YouTube then.

Or it's the platform itself your mum dislikes and hates Google and Alphabet.💀

@YUMmy_Bacon5 No, I have Google, I just can't have YouTube, and just because I mentioned that I can't have YouTube does NOT mean you can go saying stuff about me and putting words in my mouth. I'm just not allowed on most Social Media, and by coincidence, the only things I see here happen to be what I'm not allowed on. Also DO NOT talk about my mom that way, for one you don't even know her which gives you 0 right to put words in her mouth, and for two, nobody said ANYTHING about disliking Google, I have a Gmail and AOL which I wouldn't have without Google which is literally my family's go-to search engine. Before making assumptions, ask. And also @sYn, thanks for that suggestion, I'll look into that.

@MrPokemonFan777 it's called considering the possibilities, I didn't imply that what I said was correct, everything was theoretical lol. But I apologise. But I'm sure you can see my point though.

If you aren't allowed YouTube, then that's cool.

Ok sorry then but the way you worded that message made it sound like you were talking bad about my mom. So sorry, but next time plz make it more understandable, I understand you may not have thought it sounded mean but it did to me so sorry.

If this is a hobby you really are interested in and want to partake in, maybe you can talk with parents about compromise with only having the videos published as "Unlisted". Only way people would see the videos at that point would be if they found your run on whatever leaderboard you submitted to and watched it through there, but it wouldn't be findable in a general YouTube search.

Oh so like you make videos and if you set them to unlisted they can't appear in anyones recomended next and the only way to watch it would be with the link? (If that's what your saying that would be very helpful actually).

unlisted videos can only be accessed from shared links and they are visible inside public playlists if you add your videos in them

There are several reasons for uploading videos via links, including server space, efficiency of video review, and prevention of abuse. Supporting direct upload of videos requires a lot of storage and bandwidth resources, which is a considerable technical and financial challenge for the platform.
