EnglandI use the NTSC version. The FMVs flashing, if I remember rightly, are a result of running the game with the hardware renderer - luckily that doesn't matter for speedruns. As for the screen going completely black after exiting the "press start" slash screen, I'm honestly not sure how to fix that since I've never had that problem before. I guess if I can think of why that might happen, I could maybe suggest a solution here? In the meantime, hopefully you manage to find a solution.

Here are the settings I'm using:
Config > Video (GS) > Plugin Settings...
"Advanced Settings and Hacks" menu (becomes an option after ticking "Enable HW Hacks"):
Config > Emulation Settings:
(Set "Preset" near the bottom left to its default "Safe" option)

Good thinking, it could potentially work in that area. Also true, life and time zones can be annoying.
Apologies for getting back to this late. Yeah I also found this when I was doing IL attempts of Volcano Climb about a year or two ago, but sadly it's not too useful since there's not much space to do it and you have to correct yourself for the ramp to jump over the lava anyway, which would lose time in itself. Perhaps this could be pulled off elsewhere? Who knows ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I'm thinking of doing runs of them anyway and then submitting those runs if Odd Jobs do end up being added to the level board.
Is there a reason why the Odd Jobs aren't included on the IL board?

Are you playing on Remaster or OG Hotbeek?
For both Any% and All Events, you need to at least get a bronze (come third place or reach a bronze target time) on events in order to progress through the game.
The main thing is making sure you're able to progress.
