Fast cooking with the classic graphics

The content of this guide only applies when you play using the classic graphics. If you're playing the original game using the CD version, you can follow this guide as well. If you're playing with the new graphics, check the [new graphics guide](https://www.speedrun.com/tsomise/guides/jrv7d). Also note this guide **does not cover what happens when you get credit early**. When getting credit early, the position of the items in the inventory is slightly different, and you'll have to do some adjustments.

## The basics

Without a doubt, the trickiest moment in part two is putting all the ingredients inside the cooking pot. You have to use 8 items with the pot plus another one with the hot fire. The keys here are to minimize mouse movement and reduce the amount of inventory scrolling as much as possible. With the route described in this guide, you won't have to scroll the inventory at all while cooking.

There are some key principles to keep in mind here (shout-outs to frozenspade, LeoLitz, zergu12, and probably others, for finding out and/or making guides about how to apply these principles to this part):

1. You can press "U" on the keyboard to select the "Use" verb, which is faster than clicking on "Use".
2. You can use an item with the cooking pot **or** you can use the cooking pot with an item; which one you click on first doesn't matter and both will result in successfully putting the item in the pot.
3. You can "buffer" a second action while Guybrush is on his way to perform the first one (more on that later).
4. When you get a new item, the inventory automatically scrolls to the bottom.
5. Some items disappear from your inventory after you use them.

## Main route

After skipping the initial cutscene, start by going to the kitchen, opening the cupboard and opening the cereal. You don't have to pick up the cereal before opening it; just type "O" (to open) and click on the cereal after opening the cupboard.

Now go and get the Jolly Roger, then open the cabinet, and open and look at the chest. Right after looking at the chest, press the "period" key once to skip one line of dialog. After Guybrush has picked up the cinnamon sticks, pick up the feather pen and the ink. Finally, get the gunpowder and the fine wine (in this order). After picking up the fine wine, and on the way to the kitchen, scroll the inventory to the top while Guybrush is walking.

When you enter the kitchen, click on the pot so Guybrush starts walking to it and, while Guybrush is walking, press "U", click on the cooking pot, and then on the chicken. Now move the cursor back to the cooking pot and, after Guybrush uses the chicken, press "U" again, click on the cooking pot, and then click on the breath mints.

There's a faster way to use the chicken and the breath mints, buffering an action as mentioned above. It's a bit tricky, though, but I'd recommend you to go for it and, if you miss, simply proceed as explained in the previous paragraph. Start as before, clicking on the pot after entering the kitchen. While Guybrush is walking, quickly press "U", click on the cooking pot, and then on the chicken. Now quicky press "U", move the cursor back to the cooking pot, click on it, and move the cursor back to the chicken. **Do not click on the chicken again**. If you're fast enough, you'll do all this before Guybrush has reached the cooking pot. After Guybrush uses the chicken, it'll disappear from the inventory and your cursor will be on the breath mints. Click on them; since you had already selected "Use cooking pot with" while Guybrush was walking, you'll complete the action.

While Guybrush is putting the breath mints in the cooking pot, move the cursor to the item on the left of the breath mints (the map). This is something you should do every time Guybrush is using an item: use that time to move the cursor to the next place you have to click on.

After Guybrush has finished, press "U", click on the map, and click on the red hot fire. You'll see how the inventory automatically scrolls to the bottom because you got the flaming mass; ignore the flaming mass for now. Instead, press "U", click on the cooking pot, and then click on the ink. Now press "U", click on the gunpowder, and click on the cooking pot. The gunpowder will disappear from you inventory, and the rest of the items you need will become visible!

Now for the home stretch. Press "U", click on the cooking pot, and click on the cereal. Then press "U", click on the Jolly Roger, and click on the cooking pot. Press "U", click on the cooking pot once more and then click on the cinnamon sticks. Finally, press "U", click on the fine wine, click on the cooking pot one last time, and hold Backspace to skip the cutscene. ## Other possible routes

There are many other ways to do this part. You need to open the cereal in order to get the prize to open the cabinet, but you can visit the rest of the rooms in any order. Movement-wise, I haven't noticed any time differences between the routes, but there could be differences of a frame here and there.

Here's another example that also results in no inventory scrolling: open the cereal, open the cabinet, pick up the cinnamon sticks, pick up the ink, pick up the Jolly Roger, and then pick up the gunpowder and the fine wine. When putting the ingredients in the pot, start as usual using the chicken and the breath mints and then burning the map. Then use the ink, the Jolly Roger, the cereal, the cinnamon sticks, the gunpowder, and finally the fine wine.

One more example: do the same as in the previous example, but pick up the wine before picking up the gunpowder. Then, after using the chicken and the breath mints and then burning the map, use the ink, the wine, the Jolly Roger, the cereal, the cinnamon sticks and finally the gunpowder.

All these routes are slightly different and as far as I know there isn't a route that is significantly faster, so use the one that works best for you. The key point that makes it possible to avoid scrolling the inventory is that, in this version, when you open the cereal, the prize will be added to the inventory **before** the cereal. So, if you start by getting the cereal, the prize will not get in the way while putting all the ingredients in the cooking pot.

Fast cooking with the new graphics

5. When the item appearing the last on your inventory disappears, the inventory automatically scrolls to the top.
6. If you position the cursor on an item before closing the inventory, this item will be automatically selected when you open the inventory again. Check the [inventory tips guide](https://www.speedrun.com/tsomise/guides/9qc7e) for more details.

The last two points are exclusive to the Special Edition when playing with the new graphics. Also note that, when playing with classic graphics (or when playing the original game), the inventory scrolls to the bottom when you get a new item. That's not the case here.

This means that the last item we need to pick up before cooking should be an item that disappears from the inventory after using it. There are two options: the gunpowder and the Jolly Roger.

## Gunpowder last

After skipping the initial cutscene, start by going to the kitchen, opening the cupboard and opening the cereal. You don't have to pick up the cereal before opening it; just type "O" (to open) and click on the cereal after opening the cupboard.

Now go and get the Jolly Roger, then open the cabinet, and open the chest. While Guybrush is saying "Filled, no doubt, with gold and jewels", pick up the feather pen and the ink. Then look at the chest so Guybrush picks up the cinnamon sticks.

Now go and get the fine wine. The movement here is a bit tricky; if you directly click on the chest, Guybrush won't take the shortest path. So, instead, after entering the hatch, click next to the water on the right wall, and then click on the chest. After opening and looking at the chest, press "backspace" to skip the dialog, and then get the gunpowder.

After picking up the gunpowder, and on the way to the kitchen, scroll the inventory to the bottom while Guybrush is walking and put the cursor on the cereal so it gets selected.

When you enter the kitchen, click on the pot so Guybrush starts walking to it and, while Guybrush is walking, press "U", click on the cooking pot, then open the inventory and press Enter to use the cereal.

Now, if you're fast enough, you can buffer a second action. Quickly press "U", click on the cooking pot, open the inventory and press the right arrow key so the Jolly Roger becomes the selected item. **Wait until Guybrush uses the cereal** and then press Enter to use the Jolly Roger; since you had already selected "Use cooking pot with" while Guybrush was walking, you'll complete the action.

After Guybrush has used the Jolly Roger, press "U" again, click on the cooking pot and open the inventory. During the animation that opens the inventory, move the cursor to where the fine wine will be in order to click on it as soon as possible. Now, during the animation that closes the inventory, move the cursor back to the pot. Repeat the process to use the cinnamon sticks, the ink and the gunpowder. Since the gunpowder was the item on the last position of your inventory, the inventory will automatically scroll to the top.

Now for the home stretch. Open the inventory, press "U", click on the map, and click on the red hot fire. Now press "U", click on the cooking pot, open the inventory, press Enter to use the chicken and immediately press "U" and open the inventory again. If you're fast enough, you'll do it before Guybrush has used the chicken. After Guybrush uses the chicken, press Enter to choose the breath mints, click on the pot one last time, and hold Backspace to skip the cutscene. After skipping the cutscene, pick up the rope and the gunpowder (in this order) and proceed as explained in the [speedrun guide to the original game](https://www.speedrun.com/tsomi/guides/pnydx).

## Jolly Roger last

There are many other ways to do this part. You need to open the cereal in order to get the prize to open the cabinet, but you can visit the rest of the rooms in any order.

Here's another example that also results in no inventory scrolling: pick up the gunpowder and the fine wine, open the cereal, open the cabinet and the chest, pick up the feather pen and the ink, pick up the cinnamon sticks, and pick up the Jolly Roger. The trickiest part of this route is the movement to get the Jolly Roger after leaving the captain's room; Guybrush won't use the fastest path unless you hold his hand, and clicking at the right spots is very tricky in the Special Edition.

When putting the ingredients in the pot, first use the gunpowder and the fine wine, buffering the second action in order to do so as quickly as possible. Then use the cereal, the ink, the cinnamon sticks and the Jolly Roger. Finally, use the map with the red hot fire and then use the chicken and the breath mints.

It isn't clear which route is faster and both routes have some tricky parts. Personally, I slightly prefer the gunpowder last route because I haven't mastered going from the captain's room to get the Jolly Roger and then going from there to the hatch. Also, at least with credit on-time, you don't move the mouse as much while cooking in the gunpowder last route. But you might find that the Jolly Roger last route works better for you!

Fastest answers with the new graphics

In the original game, there are many places where you can choose between multiple answers and, since you can skip the dialog, it doesn't matter which option you choose.

With the new graphics in the special edition, though, you can't skip the dialog, so which answer you choose matters because of how long it takes Guybrush to say it and because, depending on your answer, you might be able to skip the rest of the conversation by holding backspace.

But, first, let's talk about a couple of things that make the list of answers unique when using the new graphics.

Just like in the original game, you can use numbers to select the answer. However, when you press a number you're not technically choosing the answer based on the order you see on the screen; you're choosing the answer based on the order of the answers when playing with classic graphics. Most of the time, the results will be identical since the answers will appear in the same order with both classic graphics and new graphics. There are a couple of exceptions, though:

- When talking to the Fettucini brothers, the option "Of course I have a helmet" is shown first, but you have to press 2 to choose it.
- In your first two insult fights, the option "My name is Guybrush Threepwood. Prepare to die!" is shown third, but you have to press 2 to choose it
- From your third insult fight onwards, the option "My name is Guybrush Threepwood. Prepare to die!" is shown fourth, but you have to press 3 to choose it
- In the conversation with Bob, the option "I've got to go after them!" is shown second, but you have to press 1 to choose it

However, there's one advantage when using the new graphics: you can use the Enter key to choose the currently selected option, and you can use the arrow keys to select a different option. This is useful when talking to the head and when talking to Elaine at the end, since in these cases you can't use numbers to choose answers.

Note that, for the most part, pressing Enter is equivalent to pressing 1, since the first option is selected by default but, as mentioned earlier, the conversation with Bob is an exception.

Considering all that, here's a list of the fastest answers (note: this list doesn't include the long conversation with the cannibals, since I'm not sure about that one):

- After using the cannon, answer "Where's my helmet?" (option 2).
- When Fester asks about the idol, answer "It belongs in a museum!" (option 3).
- When you go to fight the Sword Master, say "I beg your pardon, I must talk to you" (option 1).
- When you first visit Stan, answer "Let me see the best ship you've got" (option 1).
- When talking to the lookout after LeChuck takes Elaine, answer "Where did they go?" (option 2).
- When the storekeeper asks you about your job, answer "To be honest, sir, I'm between jobs" (option 5).
- After buying the ship, say "Have you come to be on my crew?" to Otis (option 3).
- When Carla asks you whether they're getting paid, answer "Glad you could make it, Carla" (option 2).
- At the beginning of the last part, say "Want to see a neat trick?" (option 3) to the ghost.
- When entering the church, say "Elaine!" (option 3).
- When talking to LeChuck, say "Please don't kill me" (option 2), then "How did you manage to escape?" (option 1) when Elaine shows up, and finally "Take THIS, you vaporous voodoo vermin!" (option 4) after Elaine leaves.
- When talking to Elaine at the end, answer "Sure" (option 1, although numbers don't work here) and then "It's not the size of the ship..." (option 2, although numbers don't work here either).

Last but not least, during the conversation with Stan, it looks like [the solution by MilkToast](https://www.speedrun.com/tsomi/forums/d2exu) (walking away twice and then offering 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, and 5000 once more) **saves about 30 seconds** compared to the solution of rejecting 6 extras and walking away once.

Getting the speed glitch

In the original game, there's a visual cue that lets you know when you should skip the intro in order to get the speed glitch. According to the [speedrun guide to the original game](https://www.speedrun.com/tsomi/guides/pnydx):

> At the Lucafilm Games logo, Press ESC when you see the very first "sparkle" on the L, as long as you skipped once sparkles start happening then you will have the glitch.

Other than the visual cue, there's also an audio cue: at the same time the logo starts sparkling, there's a flurry of four notes.

In the Special Edition, we don't have a sparkling logo, but we still get the flurry of four notes! Pressing Backspace to skip the scene at that point will get you the speed glitch.

There's also a visual cue: at the same time you hear that flurry of four notes, the text "Deep In The Caribbean" appears on the screen.

If you're using the new graphics, you'll notice whether the speed glitch worked almost immediately because, if it worked, Guybrush will be able to get closer to the edge of the screen while he's walking to the scumm bar. That doesn't happen with the classic graphics, though, so knowing whether the glitch worked is a bit harder. In any case, you've got plenty of time to press the Backspace key, so once you get it once, you'll be able to get the glitch almost every time.

New graphics inventory tips

If you've played the special edition with the new graphics, you'll know that using the inventory is a lot harder than with the classic graphics interface (not to mention the original game). However, Stan would say that this baby's LOADED with extras!

For instance...

## Did I tell you about the automatic item selection?

Whenever you open the inventory, you'll see one item gets a yellow border. That item will be selected if you press the enter key. You can control which item will be selected by opening the inventory, positioning the cursor on the item (so it gets the yellow border), and then closing the inventory. The next time you open the inventory, the yellow border will still be on that item, as shown in the [item selection video](https://dalek.zone/w/eL9PTLddCtdrru8iYbZaE3).

So, for example, while walking to enter the circus, open the inventory pressing I (or Alt), position the cursor on the pot, and close the inventory pressing I/Alt once again. Now, when you have to give the pot to the Fettucini brothers, you can position the cursor on the place where they will be (do it right after Guybrush enters the circus), press I/Alt, press G (give), press Enter (to select the pot) and click on the brothers. For hitting the right sequence with the keyboard, here's a small tip that is useful for me and might be useful for you. Right before giving the pot to the Fettucini brothers, you get idle time while Guybrush is saying "Of course I have a helmet". During that idle time, I mimic the movements of what I'm about to do. That is, I mimic opening the inventory with my thumb, selecting give (I use my ring finger for that) and then pressing Enter (I use the "F" key for this, so I use my index finger). Then, when the idle time is over, entering this key combination becomes easier because I've just practiced it.

Note that **there's a small delay between the moment you select the item and the moment you can use it** (maybe due to the time it takes the cursor to change from "inventory mode" to "interaction mode"). That means you might need to click with the mouse more than once after selecting the item. But don't click several times if you do this while Guybrush is still walking to the place where he's going to use/give the object, or the second click will cancel the action. In these cases, you usually have plenty of time, so wait a bit before clicking. The only place where this might be an issue is when giving the fish to the troll; in this case, open your inventory right after you start walking to the troll (as seen in the [giving the fish to the troll video](https://dalek.zone/w/rKD9v3CEWshJf7drBFbsHR)), or you will trigger a dialog.

This method isn't significantly faster than using the mouse (maybe a few tenths of a second in some places), but it's more consistent. And, after all, replacing two clicks with 4 consecutive inputs because it might save a couple of frames in a 45-minute run is exactly what speedrunning is about! Besides, if you use the mouse, trying to speed things up by positioning the cursor on the place where the element will appear before opening the inventory is tricky. If you open the inventory without moving the cursor, clicking on the item will do nothing (unless it already had the yellow border). You'll have to move the cursor again (even if it's one pixel) and then click on the item, which makes proper mouse movement even harder. You can check this annoying behavior in the [failing to select an item video](https://dalek.zone/w/hLvs1GCiKoQ1EtY5Prh3ep).

You can also position the cursor on the item you need before giving the meat with condiments to the poodles (while walking to the mansion, open the inventory, position the cursor on the meat, and then close the inventory), giving the breath mints to Otis (do it while walking back from the mansion), giving the fish to the troll (do it at the lookout point), using the chicken on the cable (do it at the lookout point), using the shovel with the X (do it while walking through the forest), using the mug with lock (do it while walking to the jailhouse), using the gunpowder with the cooking pot (do it after getting the ink), using the first rope on the strong branch (do it right after using the lens with the sun, before the dam explodes), giving the little idol to the cannibals (do it while exiting the clearing), giving the leaflet to the cannibals (do it while exiting the village after giving them the little idol), using the magnetic compass with the key (do it while walking to the ghost ship, after using the necklace), using the key with the hatch (do it after picking up the jug o'grog), or using the glob of grease with the door (do it after getting the glob of grease). The same principle simplifies using the ghostly feather with the sleeping ghost crew the second time around; no need to move the cursor back to the feather and back to the ghost.

Unless you have three hands, you'll probably need to configure your keyboard to take advantage of this feature. For example, I map my "F" key so it becomes "Enter". Another option would be using a mouse with 5 buttons and configuring one of them so pressing it is equivalent to pressing the Enter key.

But wait, there's more!

## Did I tell you about the automatic NEXT item selection?

When you get rid of an item, the item which followed it in the inventory will be the one that gets selected. This is particularly useful when giving the bananas to the monkey. After giving it the first banana, keep the mouse cursor on the monkey and press I/Alt, then G (to give), then Enter (to select the next banana) and then click on the monkey. But wait, there's more!

## Did I tell you about the auto-scrolling?

When you get rid of the last item in your inventory, there's no "next item", so the item that will be selected will be the first one, meaning the inventory will automatically scroll to the top. This can be annoying in a couple of places.

The first one takes place at the end of Part II. After finishing the recipe, you hopefully don't forget to go back to the hatch to pick up more gunpowder, which means the gunpowder will be your last item. The fastest way to use the cannon is to first use the gunpowder with the cannon nozzle and then use the rope with the cannon. However, since the gunpowder was your last item, after using it the first item in the inventory will be selected and you'll have to scroll down before using the rope. So, instead, pick up the rope after you've finished the recipe and you've taken more gunpowder. This way the gunpowder won't be the last item and you won't have to scroll to use the rope. Moreover, after using the gunpowder, the rope will become the selected item, which is exactly what you need.

The second situation also has to do with ropes. When using the ropes in the crack, the order matters: use the one that appears first on your inventory or you'll have to scroll down the inventory before using the second one.

The good part is that we can use the auto-scroll to our advantage when adding the ingredients to the cooking pot in Part II. As detailed in the [fast cooking with the new graphics guide](https://www.speedrun.com/tsomise/guides/jrv7d), you can pick up the gunpowder (or the Jolly Roger) right before going to the kitchen. Then use the Jolly Roger (or thegunpowder) wine, cereals, ink, cinnamon sticks and then the gunpowder (or the Jolly Roger). The inventory will scroll to the top, where you can easily select the map to get the flaming mass (if you get the flaming mass earlier the gunpowder / Jolly Roger will no longer be the last item) and then add the chicken and the mints. Note that, given your inventory at this point, after using the map, the chicken will automatically become the selected item when opening the inventory (since the chicken was next to the map) and when using the chicken, the breath mints will become the selected item. That means you can use these items while keeping the cursor on the cooking pot.

These techniques will help you lower the time it takes to add the ingredients to the cooking pot in part II to a time similar to the one you get when using the classic interface.

But wait, there's more!

## Did I tell you about the reverse item usage?

Just like in the original game, instead of using an item with the cooking pot, you can use the cooking pot with an item. The advantage of this approach is that the delay between selecting the item and using it is gone: press U (to use), click the pot, press I/Alt, press Enter, and you'll use the item immediately.

But wait, there's more!

## Did I tell you about the arrow-keys navigation?

You can also use the arrow keys to browse through the items. For example, when using the ropes in the crack in Part III. At this point, the last items of the inventory will be, in this order, a rope, the lens, and another rope. After using the first rope, walk to the sturdy stump, and then press U (to use), click on the sturdy stump, press I/Alt, right arrow (to select the second rope), Enter. This technique is harder and slower than using the item that already has the yellow border, so you should try your best to have the item ready before using it. In this case, it is actually possible to open the inventory, press the right arrow to select the second rope and close the inventory immediately after clicking on the sturdy stump to climb down to it. This will make using the second rope easier, as shown in the [selecting the second rope video](https://dalek.zone/w/hywUnSe1qaP1qJBRJofez8), but the time window to open the inventory after clicking on the sturdy stump is very small, so you might miss it.

But wait, there's more!

## Did I tell you about combining some of these techniques together?

The fastest way to use an item is getting it ready (that is, making sure the yellow box will be on that item when you open the inventory) while Guybrush is walking. Sometimes, you'll have plenty of time to do so; for example, you can get the pot ready to use at any point between exiting the scumm bar and talking to the Fettucini brothers. But, sometimes, you won't have much time. In these cases, you should use the arrow keys to get an item ready while Guybrush is walking and you move the mouse to the place where you're going to do the next action.

The first time this happens is when giving the gopher repellent to Otis. Here's what you can do: get the breath mints ready while walking back to the mansion. Then, while Guybrush is walking to Otis' cell, open the inventory, press G (to give), Enter (to select the breath mints), wait a fraction of a second so the cursor changes to "interaction mode" and click on Otis. Immediately after that, open the inventory, press the down arrow key so the gopher repellent gets the yellow box, and close the inventory before the conversation with Otis starts. Now you're ready to go, as you can see in the [giving the gopher repellent to Otis video](https://dalek.zone/w/p6zFfZpZcg2kcrkKwpj9MQ).

You can do a similar thing in order to use the mug with the barrel. Before going to Stan's for the first time, make sure the yellow box is on the bottom-left item of your inventory (it should be one of the T-shirts). Then, while walking to the scumm bar after getting the note from the lookout, open the inventory, press the down arrow key so the note gets the yellow box and at the same time position the mouse cursor on the place where it should be on the next screen. Then, enter the scumm bar, pick up the mugs and, while you walk to the curtain and wait for the screen to scroll to the right, open the inventory, press the right arrow key (to select the mug), close the inventory, and start walking to the kitchen. Since Guybrush walks slightly faster than the screen scroll, you won't lose time for doing so, as shown in the [using the mug video](https://dalek.zone/w/nP3dD1oNGTVMepkXHf3eg1).

After finishing the recipe, pick up the pot, exit the kitchen and, while you're walking to the hatch, open the inventory and scroll down by holding the down arrow key. Then pick up the gunpowder and the rope. Now, while Guybrush is walking, open the inventory, press the down arrow key and then the left arrow key so the gunpowder gets the yellow box and, at the same time, move the cursor to the top right corner of the screen making sure that **the mouse cursor does not enter the inventory window**. Finally, to use the ghostly feather, start by getting the key and, while walking through the room with the sleeping ghost crew, open the inventory and hold your down arrow key until the key gets the yellow box and, at the same time, position the cursor where the ghostly feather will be in the next room. Then, pick up the feather, click on the passage so Guybrush starts walking towards it, open the inventory and press the right arrow key while, at the same time, you move the cursor so it will appear on the ghost's feet when entering the next room. ## Did I tell you about using an item as a reference to position the cursor?

Right after using the lens with the sun, open your inventory and select the rope, positioning the cursor on the bottom right corner of the box containing the rope. ## Did I tell you about the error-free spam-clicking?

We've all done it. Guybrush is walking towards the exit of the current screen, and you position the cursor so you're ready to click as soon as the current screen loads... only you click too early, before Guybrush has reached the exit, and he starts walking the wrong way.

No more! When the inventory is open, clicking outside the inventory does nothing. That means that, while Guybrush is reaching the exit of the current screen, you can open the inventory and start spam-clicking. On the current screen, this will do nothing, so Guybrush won't stop walking. But as soon as the new screen loads, the inventory will be closed and your clicks will count. Overall, with this technique you'll go a bit faster and will make less mistakes.

## The tab key trap

The Tab key does the same thing as the mouse right button, meaning that, after positioning the cursor on an item and using the keyboard to select "Use [item] with", you can press Tab to finish the command. However, if you press Tab between the moment you select the item and the moment you can use it (the delay mentioned earlier), the action will be cancelled, so it's not really worth it.
