Additionally, a better look at what's going on at the pixel pipe. The top 2 images show the exact position Mario should start running from before sliding onto the pipe. If you start running from further left there's a high risk that you will overshoot the correct position on the pipe (keep in mind that Mario has to come to a halt on a specific pixel (shown on the bottom image). You cannot influence the outcome once Mario starts sliding. So the setup is the important part here), starting further right won't give Mario enough speed to reach the right x-position. Note that you can still overshoot the right position occasionally, even from the right start points due to the random character of how accelleration is handled in SML2.

Some basic things to pay attention to

- Runs on original hardware are fine in general. However, runs on Super Gameboy require a time correction according to               				https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Super_Game_Boy_timing .

- Emulator runs need to be played on ~accurate emulators. Please stick to either [BGB](http://bgb.bircd.org) or [Gambatte](http://sourceforge.net/projects/gambatte). 

- SML2 (or any game that doesn't use in-game time) is run as an RTA (real time attack) which means that the timer must not be stopped at any point until you meet the particular category's end requirement.
(Note by mugg: doesn't matter how you manage your timer, really. Just go back later and time it with virtualdub/sony vegas/whatever)

Superjumps

This applies to high jumps. High jumps are performed either by jumping while Mario moves at running speed or, when stationary, by holding Up on the d-pad while jumping. (A similar effect is also observed when jumping out of water.)
If you release the jump button before reaching the peak of Mario's regular jump height you will be able to jump higher than normal - which we call superjump.
