Useful Glitches in Scribblenauts: Ceiling Clip, Rope Trick, Terrain Removal, Tank Clip, and Double Jump

This is a brief guide to performing all the useful glitches I have found so far in Scribblenauts. (A different version of this is in the Speed Solutions "master doc" for All Levels.) Every one of these glitches is fairly simple to perform and does not require hard execution or anything too crazy in terms of timing.

Note that many of these glitches are not useful in the Any% route, as they take too long to set up if your goal only to complete the fastest levels necessary. Additionally, some of these glitches are no longer useful in All Levels, but they are still covered because there is no sense in deleting them in case they become relevant again.

Ceiling Clip

This glitch was originally found by people on GameFaqs over a decade ago. I thought it was an original discovery when I found it because I hadn't seen the board for this game yet.

The space within ceilings, walls, and floors is not solid. You can explore this space by using an Air Vent to push Maxwell against a nearby ceiling, and then placing a solid object between Maxwell and the vent. Basically any object that Maxwell can stand on can be used to clip; in general, a Log should always work.

Ceilings do not have collision from above, so Maxwell will either have to jump across solid objects in line with the ceiling, or fly through the space with a jet pack. Maxwell can reach in-bounds any time he goes too back through a wall/ceiling/floor, so you will have to navigate carefully in more complicated levels so that you don't lose progress.

This glitch has not been used in the All Levels speedrun for a while, as it takes longer to set up than the Tank clip. The Tank clip is a floor clip instead of a ceiling clip, but in most cases you can get to the same end result with it and it is faster.

Rope Gate

I have to give credit to the Scribblenauts Wikia for this, since I wouldn't have found this trick myself. Trick renamed by Big Garf; this section used to be called rope trick

Basically, all objects and NPCs have trouble detecting if they should be colliding with a barrier that they are attached to. Therefore, if you use a rope or ropelike object to attach an object (usually the Starite) to a gate, sometimes it will pass through and Maxwell can touch it. This is admittedly quite finicky, but in levels where there isn't much space for the Starite to go, it might work.

However, there is a much more reliable extension of this trick: if you attach an object to a gate, and then use a Fan or Air Vent to blow the object against it, it should go right through. Either version of this trick can be used to skip switch and button puzzles, or to skip performing other tasks within the level to open said gate.

This glitch has not been used in the All Levels speedrun for a while, as it is finicky and precise, while other glitches (usually Tank clip or gate freezing) can be done a lot faster.

Freeze Trick

I learned of this glitch from Scribblenauts Wikia.

Freezing some objects will force the game to create a large ice block, since it tries to fit it inside a square regardless of how thin/short the object is, with two helpful side effects: Maxwell can stand inside these blocks and in some cases clip above them, and in the case of gates, the terrain can push these objects out of their original locations, opening access to normally blocked-off areas. The Freeze Ray and Blue Magic can obsolete most applications of Rope Gate.

If you stand fairly close to a Maxwell-sized NPC and shoot it with a Freeze Ray, or stand even closer and drop Blue Magic on it, it will create the ice block around Maxwell, meaning you can carry it around simply by moving with a jet pack, until it thaws after 10(?) seconds. This is quite a bit faster than trying to use a rope while it is still active, since it doesn't attempt to drag against you. Note that you can also use a rope on the ice block instead of trapping yourself inside it, but this is usually just an unnecessary summon.

AFV Clip

This glitch was found by people on GameFaqs shortly after the original release, and is arguably the current most game-breaking glitch, at least of the ones that work in both releases of the game.

The Tank (synonyms: AFV and APC), along with a couple of other large vehicles, can be placed several pixels into a floor (with a deadzone in between the expected positions and the 'buried' positions). If Maxwell or an NPC rides a tank that is placed inside a floor and then dismounts it, they will fall through. As with ceiling clipping, air travel may be necessary to avoid falling out of the level or entering the wrong place.

A visual cue I use for the tank is to align the top area (the "hatch") with the bottom of Maxwell's eyes. Once you dismount, Maxwell will fall from where the hatch was, so flipping the tank with L or R and/or placing it slightly off center from Maxwell's original location can allow you to fall down in a more precise spot.

Most of the time, if you are wearing a jet pack or other form of air travel, and don't hold any directions when you dismount, Maxwell will automatically float in place. This is good to do when you are on the bottom ground of the level, since trying to hold a direction will probably not engage your jet pack/flight and will make Maxwell simply fall out and fail.

Terrain Removal

I discovered this glitch on my own, but I later saw it mentioned in an old unmaintained Scribblenauts wiki.

Ground objects (pond, pit, creek, etc.) are unique in that once they are placed, they cannot be moved. This was probably implemented because placing one deletes the terrain behind it, and the developers foresaw nasty gameplay consequences if this was bypassed. However, for some reason, toggling Identify Mode on and off (tapping the magnifying glass twice or pressing select twice) makes the game "forget" that these objects shouldn't be moved, and so you can simply move the objects as you would anything else, exposing the deleted tiles.

As stated above, the inside of tiles are not solid, so extra care must be taken to not fall to the bottom of the level. However, if done in the right places, Terrain Removal can be used to reach the Starite a lot faster.

Unfortunately, all ground objects in this game are rather large, and the smallest one I know of right now is the Creek (if there's one smaller than this I would be happy if someone told me!). Therefore, this glitch can only be used if there is enough straight horizontal and vertical space for the object.

Double Jump

This glitch only works on the Scribblenauts Collection rerelease of the game, since other versions only allow for touchscreen input.

Jump while Maxwell is running (with buttons), release all buttons, then press a direction again. As long as your timing is good, I recommend re-pressing only the forward direction, as pressing two directions can make the trick fail. You can also press up on the second jump without another direction, in order to go straight up

Through some accidental research, I have found that it is possible to farm money using a custom level created in the level editor.

There are some caveats to go along with this for speedrunning, namely that there is nothing stopping you from playing levels created on another save file with access to
