CaveGen Download Instructions and Guide

__**Some useful tips**__
* Real-time CaveGen is ONLY AVAILABLE FOR WINDOWS. If you are on Mac, you can still do all of these steps except for installing OBS virtual cam, so you can still analyze old runs, but you cannot use it with live runs.
* You can open a command terminal on Windows by searching for "Command Prompt" in the Windows search bar and clicking on the result, or on Mac by pressing the Command (⌘) button and space bar at the same time, then searching for "Terminal" and hitting enter.
* Running a command means typing that command into a terminal and pressing enter. I will denote the command by surrounding it with single quotes e.g. 'git status'.
* If you are on Linux, the Mac commands should all work for you, but again, no virtual cam.
* I list some ways to verify your installs. With the exception of verifying git, these are optional and require you to do things, like add to your PATH environment variable, that are optional for CaveGen to work, so if you don't want to do any extra work, install everything without verifying first, and only start verifying if something gives you an error.

#Step 1: Install git
* visit https://git-scm.com/downloads
* click on the download for your operating system
* double-click the file that is downloaded and follow its prompts
* verify your install by opening a new command terminal and running 'git --version' and seeing one or two lines printed out displaying the git version
* if you get an error about git not being recognized, it may not be in your PATH environment variable.
    * This can be verified by running 'echo %PATH% | findstr Git' on Windows or 'echo $PATH | grep git' on Mac and getting a blank line as output
    * Add git to your path by running 'set PATH="%PATH%C:\Program Files\Git\cmd;"' on Windows or 'export PATH=/usr/local/git/bin:$PATH' on Mac then close and reopen your terminal and try running 'git --version' again

#Step 2: Install Python3.6+
* visit https://www.python.org/downloads/ and download the installer for your operating system
* double click the file that is downloaded and follow its prompts. If you see a box to Add Python to PATH during installation, check that box
* verify your install by opening a new command terminal and running 'python --version' and getting a line or two of output about your version
* if you get an error about python not being recognized, try running 'python3 --version' instead. If it's still not recognized, try the next step.
* if python is still not being recognized, it may not be in your PATH environment variable
    * This can be verified by running 'echo %PATH% | findstr Python' on Windows or 'echo $PATH | grep Python' on Mac and getting a blank line as output
    * Find your python installation directory. On Windows this should be \Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\<pythonVersionDirectory>, and on Mac this should be either /usr/bin/python3 or /usr/local/bin/python3. Add python to your path by running 'set PATH="%PATH%<your python installationg directory here>;' on Windows or 'export PATH=<your python installationg directory here>:$PATH' on Mac. MAKE SURE TO REPLACE THE <> IN THE COMMAND WITH YOUR INSTALLATION DIRECTORY. You can then close and reopen your command terminal and try running 'python --version' again.

#Step 3: Install numpy and cv2
* pip is a tool that comes installed with python, so if you installed python correctly, you should be able to run 'pip --version' and get some output about your pip version
* install numpy by running 'pip install numpy'
* install cv2 by running 'pip install opencv-python'
* verify your numpy installation by running 'pip install numpy' again and having it tell you it's already installed
* verify your cv2 installation by running 'python -c "import cv2"' and getting a blank line as output

#Step 4: Install java
* visit https://www.java.com/en/download/ and download the installer with the big red "Agree and Start Free Download" button
* Double click the installer and follow the prompts
* verify your install by looking for a Java directory in "C:\Program Files\Java" on Windows or by running '/usr/libexec/java_home' in a new Mac terminal

#Step 5: Install OBS
* visit https://obsproject.com/download and download then double click the installer for your operating system
* if you run into problems, watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUyOZd8dnfQ for Windows or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYkrQ1LIHyA for Mac

#Step 6: Install virtual cam plugin for OBS
* visit https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-virtualcam.949/ and click on the "Go to download" button on the right to download the installer then run it
* make sure to install virtual cam to the same directory as your OBS install
* just select 1 when it asks how many cameras you want
* verify your install by opening OBS, clicking the "Tools" menu at the top, and seeing a "VirtualCam" option
* if this is not there, try uninstalling both the virtual cam and obs by double clicking the uninstall executable files located in your OBS installation directory, then reinstalling both. This will not delete any of your existing layouts or settings if you're worried about that.

Fast vs. Slow Wii Guide

Over the course of the Wii's lifespan, consoles were manufactured with different internal components. The only significant component difference for the sake of speedrunning is the disc drive, which affects loading speed. Since there's currently no way to easily factor out loading time in Pikmin 2 speedruns, top runners usually run on a fast Wii.

# Fast Wii timesave
Fast Wiis save roughly 45 seconds in Pay Off Debt and a few minutes in All Treasures. This difference is noticeable, but due to the highly variable nature of Pikmin 2 speedruns, *you do not have to have a fast Wii to achieve top times*. I would only recommend buying a fast Wii if you can comfortably afford it and you're somewhat invested in speedrunning Pikmin 2 and/or other Wii/GCN games for which the difference is significant.

# Determining if your Wii is fast
If you want to know whether your Wii or a Wii you're looking to buy has a faster drive revision, you can enter the serial number on https://www.wiidrives.com . **Currently, D3, D3v2, and D4 drive revisions are known to be fast**. Between these fast drives there is no appreciable difference in loading time, i.e. all fast Wiis are equally fast (within margin of error).

You'll notice that the Wii Drive List website often gives you a probability of having a specific drive revision rather than an exact answer. This is unavoidable due to how Wiis were manufactured. To test whether a Wii you have is definitively fast or not, you can check your timer when starting a run with no memory card in. If the opening 'crash landing' cutscene (not the skippable intro cutscene) starts before roughly 6.4 seconds, your Wii is likely fast. If you're not sure, you can always ask in Discord and most experienced runners will be able to tell given some game footage.

# Buying a Fast Wii
Second-hand Wiis are common and relatively inexpensive on eBay, Gumtree, Craigslist, etc.
You should always check the serial number of a Wii you're looking to buy using https://www.wiidrives.com before you buy it. If a seller doesn't show the serial number, you should either ask them for a picture of the bottom of the Wii or just look for another listing that does show it. Never blindly buy a Wii hoping that it will be fast!

In general, red and black Wiis are more likely to have faster disc drives because they were manufactured later. White Wiis can still be fast, but it's a lot less common. Note that the Wii Mini is **not** fast (despite being red) and you should not buy one for the sake of speedrunning!

Most Wiis you see listed online will not have a 100% chance of being fast according to the Wii Drive List. Personally I would recommend continuing your search until you find one with a 100% chance to have a fast drive, but if you're not having any luck finding one you may have to gamble. Some runners have had to buy multiple Wiis before they got a fast one. If you're not comfortable with that possibility, just be patient and keep searching for one with a guaranteed fast drive. They're not too rare.

Practice Hack Installation Guide

Please note that in order to run Practice Hack, you must first acquire an original Pikmin 2 .iso file, *which we cannot provide* due to that being incredibly illegal. Do not ask for it on the forums, the Discord server, or anywhere else.  
As always, there is some risk involved with softmodding your Wii. In the event that you do something stupid, we can't take any responsibility for it.

Your SD card should have at least **1.5 GB** of available storage to hold the Practice Hack iso.

#Homebrew Channel
__If you already have the Homebrew Channel installed, you can skip this step__
1. Ensure your Wii is on version 4.3 and take note of its MAC address  
2. Follow the instructions [here](https://please.hackmii.com/) and extract the contents of the download to the root of a FAT32-formatted SD card  
3. Insert the SD card into your Wii and load the Message Board to find and open the red letter  
4. Follow the on-screen instructions

#Nintendont
__If you already have Nintendont installed, you can skip this step__
1. Create a folder (if it does not already exist) on the root of your SD card called **apps**  
2. Download [loader.dol](https://github.com/FIX94/Nintendont/blob/master/loader/loader.dol?raw=true) and [meta.xml](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/FIX94/Nintendont/master/nintendont/meta.xml) (right click meta.xml → save link as)  
*Optionally, you may download [icon.png](https://github.com/FIX94/Nintendont/blob/master/nintendont/icon.png?raw=true), though this is purely cosmetic*  
3. Create a new folder within apps called **Nintendont** and copy the files from the previous step into it  
4. Rename loader to **boot**  

#ISO Patcher
1. Download PikHacker's [ISO Patcher](https://mega.nz/file/qdUk3YZL#25IV5djfptdw_WbYuTihAt_zCf7z0fpJTVZJ3GI51Zk) and extract the folder  
2. Place the .iso you obtained previously into this folder
3. Drag the .iso onto the patch.bat file and enter the .iso's region when prompted
4. Wait for Pikmin2_practice.iso to be generated
*The original .iso you used for patching will not be replaced, so you can keep it for future use*

#Adding Practice Hack to Nintendont
1. On the root of your SD card, create a folder called **games**
2. Within this folder, create a folder called **GPVE01**
3. Add Pikmin2_practice.iso to this folder, and rename it to **game**
*The path should look like SD:/games/GPVE01/game.iso*

You can now run Nintendont, select **SD**, then the Practice Hack from the list. If this is the only game on your SD card, it should be the first entry below "Boot GC Disc in Drive". Using the hack is pretty straightforward, but a readme is included in the ISO patcher folder detailing all of its features.

Set Seed Code

You will need a Homebrewed Wii with Nintendont installed. See [here](https://www.speedrun.com/pikmin2/guide/xocfb) for abridged instructions.
These codes were authored by Minty Meeo, and this guide is basically a dumbed-down version of the one he wrote in the [original download](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/486225375454822417/627345528728059914/Cave_Seed_Codes.zip).

The easiest way to do this is to visit the [Online GCT Maker](https://mkwii.com/gct/). In the "Game ID" field, enter **GPVE01** for NTSC-U (US), **GPVP01** for PAL, and **GPVJ01** for NTSC-J (JP). In the "Code Title" field, enter **Cave Set Seed**.

For **NTSC-U (US)**, paste this code in the "Paste your code here" field:

Before selecting "Add code", ensure that you have changed the row of Xs above to the seed you wish to use without the 0x prefix. All regional versions of the game operate off the same seeds.

Select "Add codes", then "Download GCT", and save this file to SD:/codes/GPVE01.gct for NTSC-U (US), SD:/codes/GPVP01.gct for PAL, or SD:/codes/GPVJ01.gct for NTSC-J (JP). Note that the title of the .gct file must exactly match what is shown in this pathway.

In Nintendont, select **SD**, open the Settings menu and enable Cheats. Return to the main menu and select Boot GC Disc in Drive.

If you use the Practice Hack, ensure that you disable Cheats before running it!
