# Movement

## Jumping

It takes 3 frames to initiate a jump.  In that time, Blupi stops moving, so it's best to jump as few times as possible.  The jump will be cancelled if the button isn't held for 3 frames.  The height of the jump isn't affected by the amount of time the jump button is held.

When using a keyboard, it is best to press the jump button slightly before Up or Down, as looking up or down causes Blupi to stop moving.

Touching a wall cancels 1 frame of vertical movement.  This can reduce jump height, especially early in a jump.

## Turning

Changing direction on the ground takes 7 frames.  However, changing direction in the air is instant.  Therefore, it's best to do a small jump whenever you need to turn around, saving up to 4 frames (0.2 seconds) per turn.

However, if you turn *before* the jump, the two actions will happen separately, which can take up to 12 frames.

# General tricks

## High jump from bars

When holding onto a metal bar, Blupi's jump height is decreased to 1 tile.  However, by pushing Up, Down, and Jump simultaneously, Blupi will perform a full 4-tile jump.  This does not work when using a gamepad.

A more difficult method is compatible with keyboard *and* gamepad.  Press Down to descend from the bar, and hold Jump on the next frame.

## Recoil boost

Blupi can gain massive amounts of speed by firing glue with the tank or helicopter.  Using a helicopter, hold the Fire button and Up to propel Blupi upwards.

Using a tank, hold the Fire button, then start holding backwards as soon as the glue is fired.  Blupi will be propelled backwards.

## Corner jump

When approaching a ledge with a ceiling directly above, jump on the last frame possible to avoid the ceiling.

This is very inconsistent in x2 speed mode.

## Hazard hopping

Blupi can stand between two adjacent bombs or falling glue balls without getting hit.  Using precise movement, the player can move through areas more quickly.

Blupi can also stand between two saws.  Saws are larger than bombs, making this more difficult.  Using this technique, it's possible to complete Slime 5 in under 10 seconds.

## Game over warp (for Low%)

Press Enter/Return on the game over screen to show a level select menu.  You can only **decrease** the level number, so it's advantageous to use a level with a high ID.  Press Enter to play.

## Multiplayer game over warp (for Low% with quicksaves)

Multiplayer levels have higher ID numbers than normal levels.  Using the "Game over warp" trick, you can play the final level immediately from a new game.  This requires running two instances of the game to create a LAN multiplayer lobby.

After setting up the lobby, select level 1 (if playing SB1) or level 11 (if playing SB2), then make a quicksave by pressing F3.  Exit the multiplayer match, then load the same quicksave in singleplayer.  Get a game over and press Enter to show the level select menu.  Select level 99 (SB1) or 199 (SB2) to play the final level immediately.

Hold Ctrl in the level select menu to jump 10 levels at a time.

## Avoid a game over

A game over makes you lose all progress in the current world.  If you lose your last life, quit the level to avoid losing progress.  You can even press Alt+F4.

## Pause strats

When you press the Pause/Break key, most objects will pause.  However, lightning and vanishing blocks continue moving.  This allows you to manipulate their timing to navigate more easily.

This is **necessary** to complete SB2's Final level in x2 speed.

- Fn + B
- Ctrl + Fn + B
- Ctrl + Fn + F11

# Stage-specific shortcuts (Speedy Blupi 2)

## Brick 1

After falling down into the cave section of the level, there will be three bombs blocking the path to the right. You are intended to go left and take a shield to pass through the bombs. However, it is faster to simply jump over the first bomb and lose a life on the other two to clear them away.

## Brick 5

At the start of the level, instead of going left, go right and push against the wall. This reveals a secret passage, which saves about 15 seconds.

## Palace 5

When taking the left path from the start, instead of taking the skateboard, do a high jump over the first bomb to the left. Blupi will land on an invisible platform, skipping the skateboard section.

After going to the right and blowing up the crates in your way, you will be given a helicopter to fly back up. You can bring this helicopter back to the starting point of the level, then fly up and to the right to collect the 4th chest faster. This can be risky, however, as you need to fly through a 1-block gap to get there.

## Tech 5

After receiving the skateboard, there is a staircase downwards. On the lowest step of the staircase, push against the right wall. This will reveal a secret passage. Despite taking nearly the same amount of time as the normal route, it is much easier.

## Mech 8

Perform a high jump from the very left edge of the key platform, and you will land on an invisible platform. Continue left to find a helicopter.

After passing through the mountain of mechanical blocks, climb up the side of the mountain to find an egg at the very top. From there, do a high jump to the left to land on an invisible platform. Do another high jump left to land on another invisible platform, and you will find a second helicopter. Ideally, you won't need the second helicopter since you'll already have the first one, but it's there if needed.

Bring the helicopter with you while collecting the 7 chests in a row, and you can use it to fly right back out the way you came, saving about a minute.

## Cheese 6

After opening the red door, jump up to the blue triangular block above and take the helicopter that's there. Continue forward until you reach two bombs blocking your path. Set the helicopter down and intentionally lose a life on both of the bombs to clear them away. Then, maneuver the helicopter through the space you've created and continue. Fly over the green door instead of unlocking it, then continue to unlock the blue door as usual.

## Slime 2

After unlocking the blue and green doors, the player will fall down into an area with enemies, then fall down again into an area with a moving platform. Usually, the player rides the moving platform to pass through the area. However, there is a path of invisible blocks below the platform that is at least as fast, but usually faster than the normal route.

## Slime 5

The player is meant to collect the three colored keys in order, so that the spinning saws blocking the exit can be turned off. However, spinning saws can be blown up with dynamite.
Take the blue moving platform up and jump up and left. Climb up the moving slime platforms, and there will be four piles of dynamite. Take one back to the start of the level, and plant it next to the spinning saws to blow them up. These saws are the only obstacle blocking the goal.
Alternatively, you could attempt to precisely jump between the saws, as there is a small safe area between them. However, due to the precision required, it can be risky during a full-game run.

## Slime 6

Fragile bridges can be broken from below, which allows the player to jump above the spot where the bridge respawns. By jumping with precise timing, it is possible to have a bridge reform underneath Blupi so that he can land on it. Using this method on the bridge at the beginning of Slime 6, it is possible to skip the majority of the level.
The bridge respawns after approximately 12.5 beats of the background music. So if you hit the bridge on beat "1", you will need to jump between beat "13" and beat "14".
Alternatively, the bridge respawns approximately 7 seconds after it is hit. Use your split timer to keep track of the time, and jump 7 seconds after hitting the bridge.

## Final

Near the end of the final level, there is a maze full of invisible blocks. Here are three possible solutions of the maze:

Since the optimal route requires two frame-perfect corner jumps, it's not very viable. The helicopter route is even less viable, since the amount of precision required to even bring a helicopter this far would almost certainly result in an overall time loss.

## Error with DirectPlay

DirectPlay is an old component of DirectX that is disabled by default on recent versions of Windows.  Speedy Blupi uses DirectPlay for LAN multiplayer games.  While DirectPlay isn't necessary to play singleplayer, it can sometimes cause problems when starting the game.

To enable it, go to Control Panel (*not* the Windows 10 settings app), select "Programs", then "Programs and Features".  Then, on the left side of the screen, click "Turn Windows features on or off".  A list of features should appear.  Look for the folder called "Legacy Components", and click the "+" to open it.  Check the box next to "DirectPlay".  After clicking "OK" on the window, DirectPlay should be installed.
Certain antivirus programs (particularly Avast) and Skype are known to interfere with this process.  If the installation fails, temporarily disable your antivirus or close Skype, and try again.

## "DirectX Init FAILED (while CacheAll)"

An image file is missing.  Check the "Image" or "Image08" folders of your game installation and make sure files are there.  If files are missing, reinstall the game.

## "DirectX Init FAILED (while Create pixmap)"

Your computer does not support 640x480 resolution.  In this case, you can only play in windowed mode.

Go to the game's "Data" folder (usually in "C:\Program Files\Speedy Blupi II\Data") and open "config.def" in Notepad.  Change **FullScreen=1** to **FullScreen=0**.

## Blue boxes around everything

This may happen when you play in windowed mode.  Right-click the game's EXE file and select "Properties".  Go to the Compatibility tab, check "Reduced color mode", and select "16-bit (65536) color".

## Can't delete save file

The game expects to have file write access.  Run the game as an administrator and try again (or delete "info###.blp" in the DATA folder).

## "Insert the Speedy Blupi CD-Rom"

If you see this message when quitting the final level, that is normal.  If you see it elsewhere (such as when selecting a file), some files are missing and you should reinstall the game.

## "Game not correctly installed"

There are 2 possibilities:

1. Important data files are missing. Reinstall the game.
2. The game expects the installation CD to be inserted. See the next section for details.

## Playing without a CD or ISO

The "Eggbert" version of the game runs without a CD.  For the "Blupi" versions of the game, there is a fix:
1) Create a .BAT file in the game's install directory (usually in "C:\Program Files\Speedy Blupi II").
2)  Open the .BAT file in Notepad by right-clicking it and selecting "Edit".  Type `BLUPI -nocd` and save. (Replace "BLUPI" with the name of the EXE if it's different.)
3) Run the .BAT file to play the game.

## Dream blocks are messed up (Speedy Blupi 1)

Similar to the blue boxes issue above, this is due to the game misinterpreting pink pixels as a special type of transparency.  The blocks look fine in fullscreen mode, but there's currently no known fix for windowed mode (other than modifying the "object.blp" graphics to be less pink).

# For speedrunning

## What is double speed mode?

Double speed mode is activated by pressing **F6**, **F7**, or **F8**.  The game will run at twice the speed.  An "x2" icon will appear by the life counter to show this.  This causes very unwieldy gameplay.  To disable double speed mode, press **F5**.

## What is Low%?

Low% is achieved by skipping levels through the use of a death warp.  More information is available [in this YouTube video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXt2x-BrRBU).

## What is the Low% with quicksave?

This is a modified Low% route.  Create a quicksave in multiplayer, load it in singleplayer, then game over.  Press Enter and select level 199 (SB2) or mission 99 (SB1).

## How do I use the Auto Splitter?

After downloading and extracting the Auto Splitter script from the "Resources" section, open LiveSplit.  Right-click on the LiveSplit window and choose "Edit Layout".  Click the + button, and under "Control" select "Scriptable Auto Splitter".  Double-click on the newly-added Auto Splitter to configure it.  Click "Browse" and locate "se2.asl" from the download.  After the script is loaded, check the corresponding box if you're doing a full-game run.  Make sure your timer is set to "Game Time" and you should be all set!  You'll know it's working if the timer goes up in increments of 0.05 seconds.

## Why do I need to use the Auto Splitter / in-game time?

The game has inconsistent load times, caused by the music.  Every time the music starts or loops, the game pauses.  The script fixes this by calculating the in-game time directly from the game's frame counter, so any load times will be ignored.  This is important for individual level runs, because the small difference in load times could cause a better run to be slower.

## Why are quicksaves forbidden?

The game's quicksaves store the exact state of the level, much like a save-state in an emulator.  This allows difficult tricks to become trivialized through brute-force.  Therefore, in the same way save-states aren't allowed in emulator speedruns, they aren't allowed here.

# Game versions

## Which version of the game do I have?

The title screen will show you whether you have "Speedy Blupi" or "Speedy Eggbert", and there is a version number on the bottom of that same screen.  Please include both pieces of information in the "Game version" text box when submitting a run.

## Are there any version differences?

Short answer: don't worry about it.

Long answer: scroll to the bottom of the page.

# General questions

## Does the game autosave?

Yes, very often.  The game is saved on every level transition, every time the game is exited, and even when you pause.  The saving process is often so quick that it is unnoticeable. Your progress within a single level is not saved.

## Does the game have controller support?

Partially.  The game lets you switch input devices in the settings menu and even refreshes its device list automatically.  Unfortunately, the controls are not rebindable.  You must use an external program such as GlovePIE or Joy2Key to change the buttons.  Menus can only be navigated with keyboard and mouse, and the game may crash if the controller is disconnected.

## Is there a way to increase the frame rate?

Not really.  The game runs at 20 FPS, and the game's speed depends on the frame rate.

## Version differences breakdown for super nerds

The tutorial in "Speedy Eggbert 2" is 0.5 seconds faster than "Speedy Blupi 2".

Versions labeled "Special Edition", "SE", "Valueware", or "Demo" are incomplete trial versions of the game.  There's no real reason to speedrun these, but I guess it's okay if you really want to.

Speedy Eggbert "Version 1.0" and "Version 1.1" are literally identical.  The only difference is the version number.

No gameplay differences have been discovered between different languages.

There is a version of Speedy Blupi for the Windows Phone with a bunch of differences.  Nobody's investigated it because nobody has a Windows Phone.
