Minimal parts guide when you see a level and want to try and do it with minimal parts, do the following steps, this +a bit a puzzling will get you really far
-
If you suspect the level to be possible with only the pig, try the pig in every location possible, if this doesnt work you can rule out all situations and you can move onto step 2, this level wont be possible with 1 part some examples of levels which you might expect to be possible with the pig only are 1-1, 2-23, 2-IX and 6-5, out of these 4 its quite easy to figure out where it is possible with 1 part and where it isnt (the answer to this will be below the videos so you can check it there).
-
Do you get any special parts? (these are: tnt, bottles, boxing gloves, balloons and suction cups) These parts are special compared to other parts because they have way more potential and some also allow for powerful glitches, below the step summary I list the specialties of each. If any of these specialties work you can probably beat that level with 2 or 3 parts, all of these items require RNG to some degree which can make these levels quite challanging. (I really did just spend more than an hour for a complimentary list)
-
Do you suspect any special method to work besides what has been named before? this can be quite hard to come up with or justify but this does make for really optimised solutions like 1-21, 1-32, 2-34 and 3-7 from video 1 and 4-21 in video 2 and 3. but I dont have any tips to come up with those, this is the challenging part of the challenge.
-
Can you place the pig and/or egg/pumpkin outside the vehicle? this saves a frame for this tip I will just show some examples and some useful builds examples: (ignoring builds without frames) video 1, 1-II, 1-17, 1-21, 1-22, 1-32, 2-34 video 2, 4-III, 4-15, 4-16, 4-21, 4-VII, 4-32, 4-35 and I can list a LOT of these but you get the point, it works very often 2 example builds you should know are seen in video 7, 3-24 and 3-VI video 2, 4-36 these allow you to fly with the pig outside the vehicle
-
Additional step for flying vehicles only Weight can be important, I have the useful weight statistics listed below this step guide.
-
What is the smallest ¨normal¨ vehicle possible? here are some examples of a normal vehicle with minimal parts the catch here is that you need to be sure that it cant be optimised more with the steps shown above which can be quite difficult, like 1-24 which can be optimised to the build in 1-17 as shown in video 7 video 1, 1-24 video 2, 4-13, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4, 6-I, 6-6, 6-7 video 4, 2-VIII, 2-35 video 6, 3-21, 3-22, 3-30, 3-34
Weight When making flying vehicles with minimal parts you should always consider removing rotors because you might be able to go right by leaning right which saves a part and maybe an engine too, realise that managing weight combines well with balloons as they are the only part able to reduce weight. I will list some examples where I steer by weight video 1, 1-10 and any level with at least 1 bottle because bottles have a bit of iron on their right side when they are not attached to any frame and therefore lean right and 3-7 where it takes short to find out that the pig and wheel faal right and therefore the strategy might work video 3, 4-23, 4-36 video 4, 2-35 video 6, 3-25, 3-26, 3-27, 3-28, 3-VII, 3-VIII video 7, 3-17, 3-24, 3-VI important to know is these simple weight units weight in relative units egg: 1 candy: 1 electric engine: 1 gearbox switch: 2 pig: 2 gearbox engine: 2 V8-engine: 3 king pig: 6+ golden pig: 10+ this means that if you want to make a weighted vehicle balanced and have an electric motor egg and pig you should place the pig in the middle etc...
General tips and trivia, useful to know
- Check the other videos of this challange on my yt channel (same channel as the videos below)
- components that need an engine to work can only work if the pig or another engine is in that vehicle (or both), if you want to controle a vehicle that the pig isnt in with components that need an engine you need an engine in that vehicle (example, video 7, 1-VI) I will list all parts that work with engine power in a seperate category in my part catalogue below.
- **dont forget that time doesnt matter (**Unless you have an equal amount of parts as the Wr) this fact alone makes the wr for 2-1 over 5 minutes long even though the level can be beaten way faster
- The iron frame has a variant with the christmas lights which is significantly lighter
List of all parts
Special parts: (see step 2) (Dont require an engine) TNT, Bottles, Boxing gloves, Suction cups, Balloons and Rockets.
TNT TNT are the best u\item in the challenge, they have 2 unique properties, the first is that they dont require an engine to move the pig very fast (example: level 1-15 and 1-IV in video 1) and 2 is that they can pretty reliably shoot the pig, egg and candybox through the wall. This may sound a bit weird but here it might be useful to look at examples, in video 2 and levels 4-12, 4-VII and 4-32 and 4-21 from video 3 and 1-VII from video 7 are good examples in the first 3 of these levels I shoot the egg through the wall which is possible by simply putting it next to TNT and activating the TNT, the only difference for the pig is that it needs to be within a frame before being launched to accomplish the same as shown in 4-32 4-21 (video 3) also shows me using natural tnt, (level 4-21 in video 2 shows me using natural tnt in a normal way) this most often doesnt easily combine with the wall-phasing glitch though I was very lucky that it did here. there is one other property that I would like to mention which only works in one level 6-8 (video 2) is that if you reset the level quickly after the tnt exploding the bridge stays broken and you can beat the level with only the pig. (tnt appears in every chapter except 2) levels can also have natural TNT these can also be used (on example is video 5, 2-V but there are a lot of examples and other levels where this works)
Bottles Bottles can be used to move the pig certain bits, most often 2 bottles are necessary (examples, video 1, 1-9, 1-10, 1-11, 1-12, 1-31 and 2-22) this strategy works by powering the bottle closest (most often the right one) to the finish a fraction before the other one, the easiest way to do this is by using 1 green and 1 black bottle but if you only have 1 type you need to press them slightly after one another, rarely 2 bottles arent necessary because you only need 1 and you will only discover this by testing (examples, video 1, 1-19 and 3-19, video 2, 2-VI and video 3 1-35) both the green and the black bottle have the same properties. Also make sure to activate bottles early if you are doing this because the pig falls of them easily, this strategy can still be used with the pumpkin and egg though doing this makes it way harder and I have never managed to do it succesfully (bottles appear in every chapter)
Boxing gloves and suction cups Boxing gloves are unqiue with the suction cup in that they can be used an infinite amount of times which makes them really useful and they can move on their own though they can get stuck but (especially for the boxing glove) that doesnt happen often. (these items only appear in chapter 2 and 6)
Boxing gloves Boxing gloves do require a lot of rng but there are quite a few levels that are doable with just boxing gloves from easy examples (like video 4, 2-29, 2-32 and 2-33) to way more complicated solutions like (video 2) 2-6, (video 1) 2-30 and (video 4) 2-31 and 2-36. Boxing gloves move the pig whenever there glove goes into the pig or into the wall when they are next to the pig in which case the pig wont go as high but the boxing glove will move with the pig (example: 2-7 video 3 and 2-31 from video 4), or on its own if it isnt next to a pig (example, video 4, 2-36 and video 2, 2-6) which means you can continue the strategy
Suction cups Suction cups are also able to be used to complete levels easily with minimal parts though they interact quite differently with some parts, they can pull the pig towards it but also shoot it away if it is too close (video 5, 2-18 shows both these properties in action) sometimes a suction cup might just be useful to move around for you (video 3, 6-23) or it can be used to slightly alter the pigs movement to do something which was almost possible (video 5, 2-V) they also have one really strange property which I cant explain but can be used for minimal parts (video 5, 2-19) (this trick was also used for the WR fastest time for 6-23).
Balloons balloons are pretty easy to use in some cases and make some levels beatable with just 2 parts and the easiest way to explain this strategy is by showing examples here they are video 2, 3-5 (and 4-VIII combined with TNT) video 3, 3-3 video 7, 3-13 this is one strategy (and works on more levels than just these) where you just fly up and drop the pig for it to fall on a tilted surface and bounce to the finish (danadji also showed that this is combinable with a wheel for 3-6 to fly up high and drop the pig on the wheel for it to bounce to the finish) this strategy does become WAY harder when it rquires RNG because balloons slightly move unpredictably when you pop any of them because they weight redistributes, this made 3-5 quite hard (we also expect 3-2 to be possible in this way but if it it would be the hardest level from the game in this category and I wont go in-dept about it because I have no video of it because no-one has ever done it). Another useful aspect of balloons is that they simply lift up your vehicle at the cost of 1 part and dont need engines (examples, video 1, 3-10, 3-V, video 2, 3-8, video 6, 3-23 and 3-VIII) and lastly they can be used to reduce the weight of a vehice and make it movable without engine power (example, video 2, 3-8, 4-13 and 4-15 in video 8). I have one easy strategy in this case which is to use ballons above a wood frame with a pig in it and see how much items are necessary to attach to this frame (examples, video 7, 3-V and video 6, 3-23 though there are way more levels where this is useful) you wont see it in action as I could reduce the number of parts with another strategy) also realise that the single, double and triple balloon each count as 1 part so the triple balloon has more value per part though might not be necessary. (Balloons appear in chapter 2, 4 and 6)
Rockets Rockets are the last special item I want to cover, rockets are like bottles but way stronger, but they cant hold the pig on them so some bottles strategies dont apply to them. Rockets can be used in multiple ways, one of those is like the suction cup to move around for you though for rockets there are less examples (one of them is video 3, 6-IV) The most important aspect of rockets might still be to power a vehicle very far at the cost of just 1 part. Rockets also naturally arc to the right (I have no idea why) which is useful in a lot of levels (video 6, 3-29, 3-32, 3-35). Before I tell the next bit I will give a bit of history on this challenge. About 4 months ago I started this challenge and a couple months later another youtuber (gruber) joined (also came up with the idea as he hadnt seen my videos) and made this challenge populair which is something I wasnt able to do, and this caught the attention of a moderator of speedrun.com and it got added as a category, but there is one difference in the rules of our videos and speedrun.com which is that on speedrun.com special parts are allowed (not alien parts, those have a seperate category which I havent yet done) and this doesnt mean much except for rockets because they both have a TNT-variant which explodes after firing besides the fact that this allows you to get 00:00:000 on R-1 to R-7(not allowed on speedrun.com but a funny feat) this also allows from some different strategies to work or be explored, this means they function similair to TNT but weaker, they only examples I have are 3-33 and 3-36 from video 6. (video 6, 3-IX fits in none of the categories but it deserves an honorable mention, and 3-VIII from video 6 is also funny as I used a rocket as a weighted component) (rockets appear in chaper 3, 4, 5 and 6) there are no differences between the red and blue rocket
Frames and non-functional parts: Wood frames and metal frames, 2 wooden and 2 metal plane parts, the tiny wheel, the wooden wheel, the metal wheel, springs
Wood frame, metal frame I have not yet encountered any situation where the choice between these 2 matters If your vehicle is too heavy, choose wood or replace a balloon with multiple balloons because those are still 1 parts If your vehicle is to fragile, choose metal.
2 Wooden and 2 Metal plane parts first up, like the frames it doesnt matter which one you choose for as far as I know but the same reasons as with frames can be applies I dont exaclty what these parts technically do (but I do know that 3-17 in video 7 becomes very satisfying because of them), if you need to build a plane you probably need both of these parts though 3-21 has been beating without the tail wing because a frame can act in the same way because it keeps the build stable.
Wooden, Metal and tiny wheels For the wooden and metal wheel again the material doesnt matter, I also have not yet encountered situations where I would choose a tiny wheel over those, but do keep in mind that those are ligher.
Springs I have only used springs twice because the pig can sit in them but it isnt as heavy as a frame I used them in video 6, 3-IX and video 1, 3-13 but I already improved in 3-13 in video 7 so s far as I know its only useful in 3-IX If the pig doesnt sink in the spring just click on the spring in the building menu and it will rotate, do this until its rotated 180 degrees
Valuables: Ross (the pig), the egg, the candy, king pig and the golden pig
Ross Ross is the official name of the main pig, there are some things that might be useful to know he can only phase walls if he was built inside a frame, wood is recommended. he is also able to roll quite far on his own, further than the egg and candy could and he is also able to stay on a bottle for longer because he is symetrical.
The egg and candy The egg and candy are 2 extra parts with the same purpose of needing to get over the finish to win the level, the egg appears in every level of chapter 4 and the candy appears in 5-1 to 5-12 and 5-I, 5-II and 5-III, they both weight less than the pig and can be phased through walls without needing a frame, the candy is symmetrical but the egg isnt which means that the egg cant easily be combined with bottles, they both dont roll very far on their own
King pig and the golden pig For both of these items they are only necessary in 1 or 2 levels so I wont go in-dept about them The king is necessary in 1-25 to beat that level with 2 parts the golden pig is necessary in 6-28 to reach the finish and the same applies to 6-16 where you can beat the level with only ross and the golden pig
Functional parts that dont require an engine: Rope, Detacher, Bellow, Umbrella, Spotlight, Sandbags these items dont need an engine to work and are always activatable withc a button on your screen if they are attached to a frame or spring (video 1, 1-II the bellow needs a spring to be activatable).
Detacher and rope The rope and detacher both connect multiple parts of a vehicle and can come loose upon being activate (the rope gets cut), the rope can connect 2 parts but is able to be stretched though it can snap under high pressure, the detacher can connect 4 parts, especially the detacher can be useful to activate buttons and leave those activated as you can leave it on the button. the only direct usecase for the rope ire 4-13 and 4-16 in video 2
Bellow and Umbrella the bellow and umbrella are the last reusable parts that can push your vehicle without an engine or connection the pig which makes it quite useful but easily outclassed by everyhting else (video 1, 1-II there are more examples), the umbrella also reduces the change of your vehicle breaking because it can slow its fall (video 1, 1-17 there are more examples)
Spotlight The spotlight is only necessary in 3 levels (6-18, 6-19 and 6-20) to activate buttons
Sandbags Sandbags are the opposite of balloons but I have have not had to use them once
Engines and the switch: Electric engine, Gearbox engine, V8-engine, gearbox switch
Electric engine, Gearbox engine and V8-engine There are 3 engines which in the title are listed weakest to strongest and lightest to heaviest, this is all you should know, most often a stronger engine is the better choice except when this is too heavy for your vehicle.
The switch The switch is a part which is either necessary or it is not and it reverses the direction in which the wheels go some levels where it is necessary are (video 2) 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4 you cant prevent this
Items that need and engine or pig connected to work: Electric umbrella, Fan, Helicopter rotor, Light, Little rotor, Powered wheel, Suction wheel
Light You dont need this, light is only necessary in 3 levels (6-18, 6-19 and 6-20) but the spotlight works better as it doesnt need an engine.
Helicopter rotor This is the strongest part, it is able to lift a 3-frame-vehicle (+pig and egg) with any engine, the stronger the engine, the more it can lift, also read ¨weight¨ it is also able to carry the pig in a wood frame without an engine which is useful for 3-25 and 3-27 (video 7, 3-27) but is extremely tedious
Little rotor and Fan The little rotor is the second strongest part and still very useful when you dont have an engine an example is 3-V in video 7 it also allows another neat trick which you have to see for yourself to understand (found by gruber) see the trick in video 7 level 3-24 and 3-V, The fan is a weaker version of this part but appears in way more levels and needs to be placed on the other side of the vehicle like the bellow, the fan isnt necessary very often.
Electric umbrella I have only had to use this for 1-22 yet, but it is stronger than the little rotor, but weaker than the helicopter rotor and you have less control over it because it doesnt go totally straight compared to the rotors
Powered wheel and Suction wheel These 2 wheels both require and engine but can therefore pass steeper terrain the normal powered wheel has less friction but can go a bit faster and appears in more levels The suction wheel has way more friction (basically infinite) and is able to climb walls and allows 2-1 and 2-9 to be beaten with 4 parts very slowly
I will be using these videos as examples for most categories, they are not all perfect examples, thats because I didnt make these for this guide, they are both divided into chapters so you should easily be able to find whichever level I am refering to. For more examples, you can check my channel where I have way more of these videos though some of the early ones arent optimised but are corrected in later videos and you can find which are optimised in the playlist description of the playlist of this series on my channel. The videos are refered to as video 1, video 2, etc...
Video 1 2** 3 4 Video 5 6** 7 8 levels out of the 4 mentioned that can be done with 1 part are 1-1 and 6-5 (and quite a few more) (6-5 is shown in video 2) 2-23 and 2-IX are not possible with 1 part (but are with 2) and check out my other videos in this series for the route I used on every level
