Battle keyboard controls

The game allows to control the party during battles using a keyboard. This is an undocumented feature. 
Controls:

Number keys — select actions, party members and targets
Tab key — switch between the party members
Esc — cancel current action
Enter / Space — confirm selected action

Things break when trying to combine both types of controls (mouse and keyboard).

Actions:

#Beat Attack
Using keyboard controls it is possible to:
1. Target unreachable enemies (obstructed by someone or something) if using ranged weapons
2. Attack friendly characters including the currently active character


A simple example on how attack a party member:
	1. Press 1 to select Beat Attack action
	2. Hover over any party member's portrait to select them
	3. Target any enemy using the number keys
	4. Click on the party member's portrait

#Use Item
Same targeting options as for the previous action. The only difference is that there are items that are made for friendly characters / party members. Combining keyboard and mouse controls allows to use these items on enemies.

A simple example on how use a healing item on an enemy:
	1. Press 3 to select Use Item action
	2. Select any healing item
	3. Hover over any enemy portrait
	4. Press a number key to select a party member
	5. Click on the enemy's portrait

#Mystech
Same targeting options as for the previous actions.

The option can be selected even if no mystech or shield is equipped:
1. If no mystech is equipped the game will crash when selecting mystech power
2. If no shield is equipped the action will not go past targeting stage (can be canceled)

Using keyboard controls allows to bypass NRG requirements almost completely. Party member doesn't need to have enough NRG or shield throughput in order to use it. For this to work a shield needs to have enough throughput to cast at least the first power of mystech.

When using mouse controls the game usually allows to select mystech power out of 4 options (from 1 to 4). When using keyboard controls there are up to to 10 options (0-9 number keys). The outcome depends on a currently equipped shieldcell and presence of cobalt crawlers in the combination.

*Keyboard controls allow using mystech during the battle with Rictus.*

*Targeting with keyboard allows to use mystech on dead party members. That allows to use Bane mystech on a dead character which results in reviving.*

#Skill
Same targeting options as for the previous actions.

Unlike with mystech selecting a skill with keyboard without enough bouge will not allow it to be used.

Many skills are hardcoded to affect specific party members. For example using FatimaScreen on some other character will still apply all effects to Boots and play animation correctly.

The area of effect skills that do damage will affect every enemy regardless of selected target + selected target. So selecting ally when using a skill will only damage 1 ally character + every other enemy character.

1. Press F4 while running into a trigger (keep running until the splash appears)
2. Save and load

*Since you'd need to save and load at the same time it is more safe to press F4 to open the menu. Sometimes the game would make saving column greyed-out if the menu is opened with F2 or F3.*

#. — With Cinematic menu

#. —— *Some basics*

*Some cinematics however may start playing after talking to someone, after level transitions and etc. Skipping them with the first method is either very inconsistent or won't work at all.*

*A big chunk of cutscenes that will be playing throughout the game will be stored in the Cinematic menu. To simplify that is just a list of autosaves prior to cinematic playing. That makes them usable to warp around the world, switch the game states and etc.*

*Cinematics are usually added right at the start of the playback, which means that you don't have to wait till they end to get an entry into the Cinematic menu*

*To close the game while the cinematic is playing press CTRL+SHIFT+F10 or F10 and then ENTER.*

After cinematic is skipped it is considered to be seen and will be added to the Cinematics menu unless:

* The game thinks that there is another cinematic playing on the background (skipping 2 cinematics in a row without unloading saves only the first one (more information in Unloading section).
* The game crashed after the playback [?]

#. —— *Skip mechanics*

* Interrupting cinematic during loading (by mashing / pressing F1-F4) the cinematic would not play but the party will be warped to the map it takes place at. The world state will be [reset completely](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9nRfHXYUss) as if you've just started the game but the party (stats, inventory and equipment) will remain.
*So much is getting reset that it is basically unusable in the run, the most major of all: the Tours transport won't work, even if you've got a One Gate pass, preventing from going to the endgame without redoing the Bricks section.*

* Attempting to play a cinematic while party is on the map it is originally taking place at will result in nothing being played. The game state, however, will change to the one from the cinematic.

Combine both and you can skip most of the cinematics in the game: 
	1. Warp to a map. (Load the cinematic once)
	2. Set game state. (Load the cinematic twice)
*Basically it is done by running the cinematic twice.*

#. —— *Unloading*

Skipping cinematics like that has a little side effect. After setting game state through the Cinematic menu the game will think that the cinematic have started playing. That means that it is expecting it to finish at some point which will result in unloading the game to Main Menu.

Ways to avoid:

* Be aware of places the unloading happens
* Or just save and restart the game

When the unloading occurs:

* After using elevators
* After level transitions
* During battles 
* Sometimes happens shortly after warping
* Toggling bridge at Detta Fortress (Basement)
*In general as I understand playing any small level cutscene will trigger unloading when finished*

The idea is to save right prior to unloading to not lose any progress.

#. **Warping**

#. — Cinematic warping

In general cinematic warping is based on ability to play cinematics on the maps they are not taking place at.

#. —— *Warping to maps*

Some cinematics end with map transition. Cinematics from the Cinematics menu can be played on any map. That allows to trigger map transition when needed by playing cinematics from the menu.

1. Make a save where you want to warp from
2. Play one of the cinematics from the list below.
3. While the cinematic is loading mash F3 then load the saved game. This will run a chosen cinematic at place where you saved.
4. Wait till it ends and the map transition splash appears (one moment please...) from here you've got a few seconds to open the save menu (F2) and save.
5. Press ESC and wait till the game unloads back into Main menu, then load the game.

*The cinematic will not start playing if you are on the same map where it is taking place, but the game state will change to the one from the cinematic.*

* Instead of using F2 / F3 to save and load. Press F4. It is the safest way and ensures that both loading and saving menus will be available. If the cursor disappears you can switch to the other menus with PageUp / PageDown or Num9 / Num3. *

* Anachronox Intro >>> Rowdy's. That one is different, instead of selecting the cinematic from Cinematics menu you need to start a new game, then skip it (mash F1-F4 while the game is loading) and only then play it from the Cinematics menu. After that load any save where you want it to play. It makes it possible to warp to Rowdy's anytime. It takes around 1:50s to do the whole thing. 

# —— *Warp in direction*

What it means is that instead of appearing exactly in the location where the cinematic takes place it is possible to stop midway. Imagine while playing a cutscene on a map of your choice the character instead of instantly teleporting to the location of the cinematic, moves with a constant speed in the direction of the location he has to be during the cinematic, until reaches it. And if you'd interrupt that with (F1-F4) on start the character will only travel a chunk of the whole distance.
 
The character moves during the window where the cinematic starts and the game notices that the player is in the menu and sets the pause. Somehow that window is constant and so the movespeed of the character hence the skips based on that glitch are pretty consistent.

*Basically that allows you to get almost anywhere since by adjusting the starting point the location you will end up in changes as well, the only thing that is constant is the direction.*

It is usually required for the party leader to be a participant of the cinematic you are using for anything to happen.

There are only 2 cinematics known for now that follow that logic: "Stone Sentinel" and "PAL-18 Wakes". 

*Switching characters stops them from falling down (reduces fall speed).*

# — Shuttle warp

*Allows to travel to almost any planet available via shuttle.*

The idea is to call the shuttle travel menu while being on the map it is not implemented at.
Basically you need 2 saves:
1. In the location where you want to travel to (shuttle should not be present on that location I assume) 
2. Save where the character is directly facing the shuttle's entrance.

There is a window to "use" the shuttle entrance during save-loading which allows to call it on the map it might be not implemented at. So you start at the save 2, make sure you can "use" the shuttle entrance with the use key then load the save 1. While it is loading mash the use key (clicking works as well). You should get 2 arrow buttons using which you can select the destination, since the travel is not implemented on the map you called it there will be no preview where you are going to travel.

Why is Limbus unlocked by default? No idea.

# —— *Persistent shuttle warp*

Keeps the numpad keys bound so that shuttle warp can be triggered at any time. Even after the game is restarted. Binding is tied to a saved game.

To do that you will need to run into any common battle with the travel UI on screen and then use numpad keys + enter to warp out of the battle. Optionally restart the game to get rid of the side effects. After that the save affected will be able to travel to anywhere at any time. (select location with num keys and press enter to confirm).

*The shuttle screen can be used to trigger speed strafing.*

#**Battles**

The game levels up your characters automatically from time to time even if you don't do any fighting, so you don't have to worry about missing experience by skipping fights.

# — Skipping battles

1. Make a save before a trigger (it is better for the trigger to be a cutscene (which will lead to a fight) instead of a plain battle, that helps to avoid a lot of side-effects, like remapped controls, part of battle UI overlapping the screen and etc)
2. While running into a trigger press F3 (keep moving forward until the pause splash appears)
3. Load the game (it doesn't matter actually what save file you will load at that point, the thing will still work)

*Press F5 to track whether battle skip is active or not. If the menu doesn't open then it is.*

The place in the video is the most early and reliable at least for now way to skip fights whenever it is needed. You do this once and all future triggers leading to fights will be skipped. As for now the only way to undo the effect is to restart the game.

# —— *Equipment dupe*

*Way to duplicate any items currently equipped.*

1. From the save with the item equipped load the save you want to duplicate it to.
2. During loading mash **F5** to open the inventory screen before the game finished loading.
3. Unequip everything you want to transfer, unpause the game, exit the inventory and save.
*The original save keeps the item as well so it can be done as many times as required*
*Duping bugs is possible by unequipping elementor but it has some restrictions. It seems to me you can get only twice the amount of bugs you had. (out of 3 cobalt crawlers I've got 6, but not more if repeated).*

There is a way to pick up up to 3 copies of an item at the same time. To do that bind **Use** action to scroll wheel.

1. Talk to an NPC, pause the game. (Pause/Break) 
2. Scroll through the dialogue until the window closes while holding W+D (other combinations work as well) 
3. Unpause the game.
*This may not work with some NPCs*
*Seems like in some cases it requires the dialogue to be on the last line. The game does not reset camera position if a character has more to say.*
*It is possible to set up speedstrafe in one save and use it on the other as long as both saves are on the same map*

# —— *Shuttle speed strafe setup*

Speedstrafe can also be activated with the help of shuttle UI. If persistent shuttle warp is set up you can basically activate it at any time:

3. Hold "W" and "D"
4. Press "F4" then ESC.
5. Pause Break again to unpause

# — Talking to party members

Switching characters during pause makes them clickable with mouse. If there is any event assigned to the character on click, on the map the party is at, it will be called.

# — Worldskill clip

It allows to travel in direction where worldskill happened the last time. After it is set up the movement is triggered mostly by dialogue boxes. May also work with interfaces like elevators, terminals and such.

When using wordskill mouse input is not locked while moving to the worldskill object, which allows to cancel it by interacting with something. The game is still expecting the window to appear and the state is not reset, so the movement will be resumed when 2D window appears.

1. Find a worldskill object which has something nearby to interrupt it. (some interactable object)
2. Use worldskill and while the character is trying to get closer, interrupt it by clicking on something/someone.
3. Find any other object or an actor that triggers movement and interact.

*Make sure to trigger worldskill as far from the object as possible, because it needs to be interrupted prior to character reaching the object + some extra distance, because there seems to be some sort of a threshold (character doesn't have to be precisely near the object for a minigame to start, so if it was interrupted really close to it the minigame might still start).

The inconsistent part of it, as for now, is that characters, sometimes, keep using pathing which prevents going through walls and such.

# — The Bricks

# —— *Stargent Laserblade early*

There is a way to click on the wall behind the compartment that is supposed to be opened with Stiletto's worldskill.

# —— *Batman skip*

Allows to skip elevator animation at Tenements when going down. It is done by running into the fence by holding W+D.

# —— *Free One Gate pass*

Allows to get One Gate pass for free. Even though One Gate pass will cost nothing it is still required to have 5000$ to have the One Gate option unlocked. Pausing seems to swap the prices for the tickets, so if you will try to buy tickets to Sender Station that way they will cost as much as One Gate pass normally.

1. Click on the ticket terminal
2. Wait till the menu appears
3. Pause the game
4. Click on the One Gate button
5. Buy the pass
6. Unpause the game

# — Winning common battle
*Allows to get the win screen without killing the enemy. There are no rewards for winning battles like that for some reason.*

To do that:
1. Run into a trigger pressing F4
2. Unpause the game (F10 / pause break)
3. Wait till the fight is lost (Fatima button will become greyed-out)
4. Save the game and load
5. Pause the game (pause break) and click
6. Press "esc"
7. Run into a trigger again
8. Don't move after battle summary, instead save and load
done!

*Alternative way is to warp out of the battle with persistent shuttle warp and then revisit the trigger after restarting the game*

# — In-battle (inventory overlay)

You can enter battles with inventory screen on. To do that press F5 before entering a trigger that starts a fight, then unpause the game by pressing F10.

Equipping / unequipping anything when a character is dead will revive him giving 1 hp
Equipping / unequipping shields will reset them (the NRG bar)
Equipping / unequipping weapons will make the characters attack with no animation

**Eqiup** / **unequip all** buttons do similar things

# —— *Pick-up dupe (Old)*

*It's a bit tricky to do and only gives 1 copy of an item.*

There is a window between picking an item up and blocking input, which means that you get to open main menu when starting to pick up an item. Saving in that state will allow you to replay the pick-up animation on load but this time there will be no input block hence you get to pick-up an item 1 more time during the animation.

1. Click on the item you want to dupe and press F4 at the same time (click should be slightly earlier)
2. Save and load
3. During pick-up animation click on the item

Allows to clip outside the window of Boots's office. Somewhat faster way to leave Rowdy's but seems to be pretty inconsistent. It is done by interacting with the window while running into it.

# —— *Noggin skip*

Allows to get into Mystech Tunnels early. It is done by positioning an NPC near the fence and using him as a trampoline.

*Holding shift helps a lot to position more precisely*
*Talking to an NPC makes them idle for a few seconds before going somewhere and so talking repeatedly helps to keep them in place*
*Replaced with speed strafing over the fence in any% route*

# —— *Stone Sentinel alternative skip*

Dying during the encounter and saving afterwards allows to save the game on the battle arena. Then there is a way to navigate outside and get to the stone as it is done in the main Stone Sentinel skip. 

1. While running into the trigger press F5
2. Wait till the party is dead
3. Save and load

*Slower than skipping with a cinematic, but maybe can be helpful for the other categories*

Allows to bypass the requirement for sock on bridge at Hovel. It is done by running and saving into the trigger in a similar way as cutscene skip is done.

# —— *Stone in the Dirt Rowdy's copy*

During Rowdy's Secret Boots sees a flashback of the Stone in the Dirt scene. The area was copied to the Rowdy's map to make it happen. Luckily the stone entity kept it's parameters. Clicking on the stone without any preparations will result in an error. However if the Mystech2 map was visited right before Rowdy's the script on the stone will work and will play Stone in the Dirt scene even though it takes place at Rowdy's.

So running:

and then clicking on the stone there will run the scene

# — Sender Station

# —— *Commons fence clip*

Saves some time on walking from Lounge to Sender Station. It is done by talking (with the use key) and holding **S** until clipped.

Stiletto's worldskill tutorial can be skipped, keeping the trigger in place. So that when you'll need to add her to the party you'll just walk into it. (After the museum mission at night).

# —— *Activating PAL-18*
*Assigns PAL-18 to the party and moves Grumpos*
1. Save the game
2. Play "PAL-18 Wakes". While it is loading, press F3 and load your saved game so that the cinematic plays there.
3. Wait till the end of it and save.
*The character has to be unlocked (be present in F5 menu)*
*Not only it activates PAL-18, but changes the position of already present character according to the cinematic (Grumpos)
It is not clear exactly how this works and when. This won't work on every map.*

There is a way to go down the elevator shaft at Hephtower1. At the bottom of it there is Grumpos with the sequence related to elementor tutorial.

Clicking on Grumpos:
1. If there is only 1 party member the quest log will update. That will also unlock elementor.
2. If there is more than 1 party member the elementor tutorial will begin.

*Shouldn't be able to have both at the same time but for some reason sometimes it is enough to just talk once with an additional party member to get both elementor and elementor tutorial if clicking fast through the tutorial, but sometimes it doesn't work.*

*More consistent way would be to click on Grumpos the second time right before the elementor tutorial begins. After screen fading out there is a small window to click on him. And apparently the game keeps the party size at 1 during the tutorial, so it triggers the correct sequence (getting elementor and updating quest log).*

# —— *Lower Levant wall slide*

The rock wall that prevents from going to the next map does not completely block the way. So sliding into it from the nearby wall allows to go around it.

# —— *Fortress with 3 characters*

Allows to have just 3 characters (Boots | Stiletto | PAL), without additional party members, during the Detta Fortress section. Currently seems to softlock the game during the final fight but looks pretty interesting nevertheless.

1. When the party arrangement screen appears fill both parties completely
2. Pause the game and bring the extra members back to the pool
3. Press accept button

*What's interesting is that it influences the final fight. As a result Stiletto disappears and it is possible to have only 2 characters active at a time. The game seems to crash when the second character replaces an orb.*

Allows to move a party to the place of the selected pick-up.

1. Point at any pick-up (Don't move the mouse anywhere after that)
2. Press "Pause Break"

#— Invoking events
***invoke** runs the event of the id supplied. The events can be global or local, they are stored in gamefiles of .ape extension. To find out event ids you can look through the decompiled scripts [here](https://github.com/AlpacaNox/Anachronox/tree/master/APE/Gameflow)*

**Invoke** is used a lot throughout the game for UI and any sorts of in-game events.

#— Running cinematics

For a cinematic to play properly you would need the party to be at the map it is taking place at, otherwise the cinematic will still play but the environment won't match. 

Most script files already contain the map name in the name of their script file which helps to figure out where to play them. For example for the script file **fortress2_detta_intro.s** the name of the map would be **fortress2**.

## Playing cinematics with the "playscene" console command

To play a cinematic open the console and type in:
**map *nameofthemap* **
**extern "playscene *cinematicnamehere*"**

will run the Main Menu Intro cinematic — **black_intro.s**

## Playing cinematics with Planet (in-game cinematic editor)
Playing cinematics that way will show a lot of extra things on screen, you will be able to see how the cinematics were put together. This engine module was used to make all cutscenes in the game and left for modders to use. Similarly as for the previous approach you will need to first use **map** command to load the proper environment.

To play cinematic with Planet:
open the console and type in:

This will run Planet. To be able to click on the buttons press the **TAB** key.

Creating savegames via console for making splits later

I use console to save and load savegames at the start of each segment. Menu allows for <10 save games. Suggestion: "savegame 101" for Bricks, "savegame 102" for Sender, etc. This way you can always load a segment to do a split.

How to not crash the game

There are several places, at least for now known to me where the game can consistently crash. Not only you will lose progress if you didn't save, but the game will also forget all the cinematic saves that were unlocked during that session, whether you were saving the game or not.

* Attempting to call any menu while "Anachronox Intro" or "Fatima Stops Boots" begin.
* Loading the cinematic autosave "Going to Sender Station"
* Destroying the holograms during Rictus fight (Use as little AOE skills as possible)
* Using keyboard to order bivice (an elementor which allows to have 2 input bugs) mystech attack (when selecting the input bug)
* Loading a save made during a battle (crash if used after restarting the game, softlock(likely) if in the same session).
* The battle after "Lost in Space". It is very special, it is not happening on the "Chamber" map, it is a separate one, related to the cinematic. All characters here have maxed out hp for some reason and using mystech here, at least with keyboard led here to crash several times. So I'd advice to just wait for Rho's special(Plasma Wall).

- In one of the corridors there's Theta Squarewave Crystal behind one of the arches — you must take it! Equip Democratus with Theta Crystal and DoubleBracer
- red door panel: Right 3, Right 1, Right 2, Left 1, no change (this opens all the Red Security Doors)

#Segment commentary

##The Bricks
The walls that block you off from entering the Junkyard and Tours seem to replace the real map transfer triggers, meaning that even if you can bypass the wall there is no way to enter those 2 maps early.

* Talking to Grumpos for the first time unlocks the Junkyard and a part of Casinox Area.
* Talking to K'Conrad the second time unlocks Tours (to be able to do that you need to get Grumpos to join you, which will trigger the event where Fatima updates the quest log and says to talk to the Doorlord, and then the Doorlord triggers K'Conrad to talk to you for the second time. So you need all that just to be able to access Tours.

The Doorlord disappears once you finish the Mystech Tunnels. In theory you could skip Grumpos quest, because he joins you in the second part of the tunnels anyway but the problem is that the quest that gets Grumpos to join is required for Doorlord to update the quest log and finishing the Tunnels despawns him, so that order will softlock the game. That's why getting Grumpos to join normally is required to be able to advance further.

Eddie does nothing it seems, there's no point in Junkyard, since it is possible to enter the tunnels right from the beginning without doing any quests.

##Votowne — Hephaestus

There is a way to skip everything from Votowne (first visit) to arriving at Sender Station after Hive. The way to do it is to warp to Sender somewhere after the "Sunder Breaks" cinematic. What you need here is Rho to join you which happens right in the beginning of "Lost in Space" to be able to access the shuttle later on. However sequence breaking like that leads to some consequences regarding Votowne. But! That's not all!. Then we go to Hephaestus and talk to hidden Grumpos which skips completely the investigation section in the Monastery. And currently this is the most optimal way to ensure that Votowne gets ready for the second state (when you arrive there after Villain's Ship). The best indicators of that are: unlocked elementor, the Grumpos's table has the things on in the Lounge of Commerce or you can just warp to Votowne and see if the additional npcs got spawned here. (Again all that happens much earlier than you actually get to Votowne the second time).

Even though Votowne changed the state and the dialogue in Republic Inn is available (resting is supposed to lead to Fatima's cinematic) it won't work until you legitimately arrive here through the cinematic from Whitendon.
The fact that you finish the investigation quest and play elementor intro before doing Rho's quest on Sender Station means that you will get warped to the Lounge afterwards. Since there's no one else at lounge except Boots and Grumpos, Fatima won't let you out and the only way to escape it seems to warp with any cinematic ("Disguises" seems to be the most suitable). From that point you need to do Rho's quest solely with Boots.

There might be a way to do this differently, without having to go to Hephaestus twice, but I found that the route in the run is the most optimal one and backtracking doesn't waste too much time regarding the other routes.
Doing things the opposite way (Rho's quest first) will make Grumpos to disappear when completed, denying access to Hephaestus (since you need him in party to get there). There is a way to avoid that by making a save before doing Rho's quest, do the quest until PAL's solo mission (the museum quest) and unlock "PAL Solo Enters" cinematic. Then warp with Boots, PAL and Grumpos there from the save made prior to the quest (right after arriving to Votowne the first time). Completing the PAL's quest with a whole party ensures that Grumpos won't become inactive (disappear) during the cutscene.

However that breaks Votowne for some reason, it remains in it's 0 state, softlocking the game in later stages.

The fight with Magmatos is optional, skipping will complete the quest. However you'll have to get back to the monastery somehow. Warping with "Braving the Levant" is one of the options.

Segment to savegame mapping suggestion

I use console to save and load savegames at the start of each segment. Menu allows for <10 save games. Suggestion: "savegame 101" for Bricks, "savegame 102" for Sender, etc. This way you can always load a segment to do a split.

Skips and glitches

THOSE THAT I USE, in chronological order:
• you can walk out of whackmaster's right after the first part of the tutorial. the goon blocking the path to casinox area will be gone
• if you hold the speedup button before the fight is over and release it when the "Hell yeah we won" animation starts playing, you get sped up without needing to hold the speedup button. nice
• fail boat and hive mini-games, they are not worth it

USEFUL GLITCHES, NOT USED IN A RECORDED SPEEDRUN YET:
• death glitch: die in a battle, on death screen press "pause" and then click. you'll get to the menu. the menu should be overlaying your character in a weird way. press "esc". now you can move character but the cam is fixed. useful for skipping battles, especially near transition points, such as Fointain Area Goon Fight or Commiteon Last Fight

THOSE THAT I CAN'T FIND APPLICATION TO:
• loading an auto-save resets objects on the level and enemies don't attack you, though not always. auto-save is created on a level load if there were no manual saves 15+ minutes before that. hypothetically, a well-timed auto-save could be very useful, especially to skip battle-intense areas
• sometimes during the tutorial at the whackmaster's boots gets out of bounds. couldn't find application for it yet
• On Sunder if you run out of time and die just click and then hit Esc. You're back in the game and the timer is gone.
• you can often load a cinematic from the menu and just at the end of it there might be a second or two when you can save game. the game will throw you out to the main menu but you can load the save game you made after that. have no idea how to use it ))
