Not really worth it unless more runners really wanted it. Watering down the board with more categories and no runners is not ideal.
Stuff will be figured out. Pointless to spitball until stuff is figured out.
Officially you can still get the disc and it'll download the latest update. How you get the actual base game installed makes no difference.
Anything that required installing externally or modding your game console is a no go, period. DLC will probably be banned as it was in the previous set of rules but remains to be seen.
Mods. External mods are usually frowned upon in speedruns. Rules are currently a work in progress so take anything you see with a grain of salt until an official news post is posted.
Ignore it. This board is about to get a major overhaul and a lot of those weird categories from previous moderators are going away. A lot more categories will be added such as license tests, individual races, etc. It'll all make sense.
ETA is sometime in the next 4-8 weeks.
In due time I’ll fix the board and add a lot more. Probably won’t be this year though.
I'll do a test run of this and post it soon. As I'm planning to come back to the game here soon I'd rather not use the unstable rocketship that is BC PS3. I think from the surface there's zero reason not to allow it.
On a side note: I do think emulator should be allowed for stuff like Boss Survival and not hidden by default. Open to other expansion also but at the very least since there's an on-screen IGT I'd think that would be fine. We do the same thing for Substance Skateboarding.
I'd just re-do the run. Always a good idea to local record if possible in the event something like that happens. Because it's RTA timing having two separate streams will make timing impossible, so no, you may not submit that.
I am proposing to ban Emma zips. As it sits right now, Emma zips require a certain operating system (mainly Windows 10) and they do NOT work on Windows 11. This can pose a major problem going forward should the zip not work on future versions of Windows. Before records become impossible without the zip, I am looking to see your thoughts on a ban of the glitch all together.
Should it become workable on Windows 11 (whether it's via an update, patch, etc.), then this is a non-discussion. But I find myself baffled that we have to run an entirely different operating system just to perform a glitch.
I get having to run different versions of a game, different patch, modify an option or something. An OS change seems like a bit much IMO.
Any existing runs would be grandfathered in.
Please note: This is NOT a formal vote. This is just a general discussion for now.
Let me know your thoughts on this.
Current thoughts based on posts:
OK with either/or: 3 No: 2
Zero idea. Will likely get removed once board restructuring happens.
These boards are an absolute mess. They will be cleaned up and re-organized at some point this year. A lot of it stems from previous moderators. We will fix such issues when we begin the overhaul of the leaderboard.
Something like that would probably fall under the Console category of the leaderboard rather than emulator IMO. You're welcome to submit it.
Precedent. It was 4% before I took over the boards and there were runs with 4%, thus the default of 4%.
I wasn't going to make a 3% and a 4% category so just left as is. And I certainly wasn't going to delete existing runs to favor 3% either.
A in my opinion. Runs already have it and everybody can do it. I think it's a bit late to just get rid of this at this point. I'll let others give an opinion before I write a book (if necessary).
As I stated previously, load variances are nothing new when it comes to Metal Gear speedrunning and speedrunning in general. This is exactly what filters that nobody cares to use should be used for if someone wants to compare against X or Y. Creating more and more categories just leads to more clutter and opens up a giant can of worms for other games. If we separate one platform, we'd have to separate all of them. PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, etc. is much slower. We don't separate those. It's not a large difference in my opinion that would warrant such a separation anyway. The only reason PC is separated from Console is PC uses a load remover. Otherwise, separating categories is opening up Pandora's box.
Having IGT slower than RTA is nothing new. With older editions such as PS3, Xbox 360, etc., having an IGT/RTA difference varied throughout consoles. It can vary with lag, pausing etc. Loads could be slightly different from one platform to another also, but we never separated out platforms. That's what the filters are for.
Now I haven't done my own runs, but do plan to do all my console runs on Xbox Series S over my PS5. But for right now, from the data I've seen, it seems to be acceptable variance. Not every console is going to perform the exact same. Also, from what we've seen with very inconsistent loads on the PC version of Master Collection, I would not be surprised if a little bit of this is going on with Console versions from time to time.

I'm going to go ahead and make an executive decision to allow this since nobody has objected. The above resource will be updated as needed as we continue to find issues. But for now, feel free to submit runs using the minimal install and feel free to discuss here.
NO LONGER UPDATING THIS POST. SEE HERE INSTEAD: https://www.speedrun.com/mgs1/resources/am0et
Also in reply to my own post regarding crashing last night, adding back some VOX files have resulted in less or no crashes. Also, setting your Core Affinity in bmn's launcher to Core 0 also seems to help.
The following VOX files should be re-added to the VOX folder. If we discover more we will update. I eventually will re-package the installer to include all necessary VOX files once testing is complete.
VC014403 - Mei Ling Codec on Heliport
VC020000 - 1st Master Miller Call
VC054201 - Post Ocelot
VC091202 - Post Ninja with Meryl
VC251401, VC251402, VC251403 - Post REX
VC281209, VC281210, VC281211, VC281212, VC281213 - Final codec before Score screen
VC211001 - First codec in REX's lair
VC203401 - Post Raven
Testing in itself will take time, but I see zero reason not to allow this on the board at this time. Go get those WRs.
I mean we were already playing with modified version anyway, such as with the Reddit version to make it work on modern PCs. Then GoG. Then a music patch. Then an analog patch. This has already been a pieced together version, so being vanilla as possible really isn't a thing here. A lot of the PC 2000 is considered a gray area, but the community has voted and decided to move forward with everything we've done so far. PC 2000 is basically MGS1 Speedrun Edition so to speak.
Regardless, cool to see you post here on the forums and thanks for having the video somewhere for this discovery lol
After doing some testing with other runners, we are running into crashing issues at various codecs. Examples would be the first Miller codec in the vent, after Ocelot, after Ninja and after REX. I have had one crash/freeze but others have had many. Is anybody else having issues? I almost want to say it's a core affinity issue but unsure. Reddit and GoG installations affected on this.
