United StatesI agree with the patch being accepted now, and it's already a feature of it, why not make it a category. I could see the appeal of it and why some would like to run it or have interest in it. I honestly don't see it surpassing any% or becoming a main category tbh but I can understand the potential worry or why the thought of it as a category would turn someone off. I also agree with Holysoul how it seems that "discussion" does get shot down and the decision is already premade and you'll be damned if you go against it.
Respectfully Levi I'm going to have to disagree with you or rather your mentality of calling everyone a "purists" if you have something against the idea of something like this. One person's opinion doesn't speak for the community and neither does yours. Just make it CE and let everyone have fun? Then why are we even discussing? Why even ask? People are very opinionated, yes, and that is your opinion but I am not shitting on you for it. If we assume every has that same "Just let people have fun" mentality then nothing needs to be asked. I know at the end of the day none if this actually matters but I don't like the idea of fake discussion. If that's the case lets go crazy with it. I did a dry run of Chris Any% No Item Box. There's some slight differences to the route but I'm not sure if it would be considered major. Mansion 1 is the same, just extra door checking to dump the shield and armor key. No handgun obviously, just wait out the flash on Crimson. Mansion 2, pretty straight forward, just not picking up the blue and red book. I used the emblem key before heading to caves. After returning to mansion, I had to double back and get the stone and metal object from the wall, then pick up the red and blue books after putting those in the Lisa door. Again just my initial run, sure it could be better routed.

As far as discussion goes, I say no to allowing turbo even for just DS being that the remapping is allowed and that in itself provides a less intense alternative to stairskating and it could also affect things outside of stairskating as mentioned before like menuing and quickshots even (again, probably). There's no doubt that it is indeed timeloss for unoptimal stairskating, but thats any aspect of the game, If not done well, you will lose time for it. I understand injuries can prevent people from being able to do it well, I understand making it more accesible to run, but it's the baggage that comes with the game and you have to expect it.
I hope to not come off elitist or non welcoming. It's a part of the game that can be practiced like any other part. If you physically cannot do it to whatever extent you deem neccesary , there's other aspects of the run you can improve on, you will lose that time surely, but won't be the end all be all of the game. I guess what I'm trying to convey is that it's tough trying to be inclusive for everyone without sacrificing something in turn for it. So yeah I guess the sacrifice here would be "integrity."
You can pick up extra powders in the save room before steam room if they spawn there or at water puzzle. It takes 12 freeze round shots I think for him. I know on Bawk's no damage run he uses GL for waste disposal Nemmy, so you can check that out to see how it does it.
I vote yes. I really don't have an in-depth heart felt explanation other than it being annoying. I think being able to lock this and ONLY this RNG is not that big of a deal. I'm not a purist. Is it a modification of the game? Yes. Door Skip is allowed in REmake and that's a modification and for what? Convenience? Because people don't want to waste half their time looking at doors opening and closing. Shouldn't people that submitted times before that mod feel jaded? Because they had to suffer through loading that wastes their time and these modders just have it easy and don't have to play the game the way it was intended to? You can bring up and nitpick many factors and examples or whatever you want all day, it'll just all go into a circle. You can't please everyone. Yes you can decide to compete with magnum because that's technically any% and you, yourself can choose to reset. If that's the case why was the magnum category created in the first place if it's not so different? Why don't we get rid of magnum all together if that's the case? There's no way around it, that GL is the fastest and most optimal way of finishing this game as fast as theoretically possible and is the preferred weapon of course for the most competitive category of any%. Ensuring that you get that weapon and EVERYTHING else runs as intended RNG and all, and its up to the player to execute. I see no problem. Also, a magnum tool should be created for those that want to run magnum. Only fair right?
Another good thing about doing it this way, no armed zombie seems to do less damage. Usually the next bite when I'm in caution drops me into danger but using this way, I can tank another bite and stay in caution.
It's whatever the mods decide, I can only give my opinion that I think this ruling is unnecessary and give my reasoning why. We can argue semantics but me personally, what knife only means to me is that the knife is the only weapon that may be used as a weapon/deal damage. What other weapons are in your inventory is irrelevant. If the gun is never fired then it's fine. As stated previously, yes you can still stair skate with the knife but its a different story with Claire when the flashlight is out which the majority of stairs in the game are in sections where the flashlight is out.
As it is a speedrun, I was under the assumption we may use any time saving tricks/exploits as long as it doesn't go against the category description, in this case having the knife be the only weapon you use to deal damage and not firing any ammo. No disrespect to Soulless_Persona but you ask what knife only run allows you to keep a gun in your inventory. I've checked a couple other RE game's rules for knife only/low% and none of them explicitly state you have to box your gun as soon as possible and cannot have it in your inventory, they generally state only the knife may be used. The reason that people decide to box it as quick as they can is usually for inventory reasons not because of some ruling. Look at some RE3 knife only runs. You can get through half the game with a pistol equipped if you wish to because inventory does allow you to without losing time boxing it and you don't even really need it up until that point. Yes you can deem it silly they have a gun out for a knife only run but that doesn't discredit it. If that's the case those should have been rejected.
The difference here is that the gun actually provides a purpose and its strictly movement based. I don't think that is enough to warrant this ruling. There hasn't been this rule explicitly stated before so I just don't get why is it a thing now all of a sudden.
Definitely a consistent and safer way! That extra step really does make a difference. I was concerned at first if this was affected by framerate but it doesn't seem to be.
Oh wow, yeah it's basically a variation of the Gamecube strat. Didn't know it was done like that, never really watched a GC run. I actually started thinking about doing this for Real Survival to find a sweet spot to reduce any aiming mishaps that as long as im in the right spot and direction. Then figured its better suited for regular any%. Im convinced as well about the random health thing unless it just has intricate ways it deals with damage.
Also during my testing/tinkering one flame round somehow did enough damage to trigger the first cutscene. I usually run Real Survival so im not too familiar with this fight. How usual (or unusual) is that?
Possible optimization? Less stairs to skate down. Only thing is dodging its acid attack, I'm taking a specific line to get it but idk how reliable it is. I managed to pull it off 3 times in a row. I'm unsure if its the specifics of the line itself or Plant 42's randomness playing in my favor. Hopefully It's something to look into. Still inconsistent at times. I'm just not sure if it would be worth it in the long run. Any thoughts?
Personally, I'm indifferent. Im not against it being added nor am I for it. I'm most likely not going to run the category unless it's for the memes so whether it's added or not doesn't affect me. If there are truly people who are interested in it, I'm not going to sit here and say they can't have it. I'm just cautious that it would seem like a wasted effort if not that many people will bother. Agreeing with what Silentkaster said, it would be oversaturation.
Yeah, have to pick and choose when its most effective but again will most likely be evading into sprint to close the gap. The best use I've found for it is the boss on 3-3 If pulled off correctly and she cooperate. Using a shotgun with blast on it and a ST assault rifle. Reloading the assualt rifle while scoring the knockdown with the shotgun.
