Hi @NightKnight77, it has been a few years. Are you still interested in running a NG+ category?

Adding new categories sounds interesting to me, and doing well in NG+ would be challenging. My only concern about this ruleset is set-up time.

In most new game plus categories of other games, you may copy save files to retry from the start of new game plus, without having to beat the original game again. With how OSFE auto-saves so frequently though, and has console ports where it would be harder to manipulate save states quickly, each NG+ file would need to be prepared manually. So it sounds like a long category to run, especially Unseeded.

Another positive is that NG+ would be a unique challenge, since it does not overlap with the existing full-game-runs very much. Kind of like gathering all achievements in another category, or doing a run of one world for a short IL category.

Given the pros and cons above, do you still want to run NG+?

Hi @Capitaine_Echo, I agree that having the IL leaderboard shown first is a good user experience since it has multiple runners on it. If you are still looking for an update on how the whole-game categories are split up, then you may want to visit the Discord channel and ask again there, there has been some conversation the last few days so yours may be noticed.

@ProfessorSakura I think it is probably fine to wait for some submissions before adding more empty categories, to make sure there is interest in the newer categories and saving the admins time.

Q: Should a real-life-timer be in recordings of future runs, to go along with the in-game mission complete timer?

In the full game run, it looks like the final time might be based off of real time, while the individual levels (IL) measure mission complete time. Recording both sounds more consistent, and could help measure finishing levels in as little time as possible, including pausing the game. The IL levels also do not come with rules, but I am most interested in participating in them in the future over the whole game.

Sounds good to me, I have 2 more points to add:

  • Infinite resources are another starting value question to answer. A skeptical non-speedrunner mentioned this to me on the DQB2 Discord, which I thought was a good point. "... dqb2 has only ever been timed start to credits, never in segments. too much variation in starting position (level, quipment, infinite resources, etc.) to do a segment run and be comparable to other people. the game requires no mini mdeals ever be collected for an any% run ..." (@lilisaur).
  • I would really like start/end rules added for Chapters 1-4 of the DQB1 speedrun categories please. I replied to a thread asking about them. I feel much more likely to run one of those first because I don't have to prepare a new save file. I have guesses of when to start and end the timer, but as a new runner I don't want to get it wrong and have to redo hours of work.

Aloha, I am a new member excited to learn more about how to speedrun both DQB games, especially the first sections. I heard the moderator @Highspirits was doing a daily stream for 5 months that wraps up tomorrow, so hopefully he can help out once his hands are well rested.

Written rules would be helpful for consistency. I watched some other submitted runs tonight and not every submitted run's timer is synced to the game's start and end.

My best estimate is individual levels end when the blue circle fades right before the credits (both Chapter 1 recordings from @bobdedbuilder), except for the last level which ends when the confetti is fully rendered after the last text box is closed at the end of the Princess' speech (Any% recording from @TheCowness).

Q: What are the allowed starting values before starting any 1-4 (Furrowfield through Malhalla) runs?

  • Equipment
  • Malroth's weapon
  • Level range
  • Mini-medals collected

Details: To me, starting bare-handed, with the weakest Malroth club, without armor, and at the minimum level sounds the most fair, but being at the minimum level sounds difficult to set up since you cannot lose experience points. Also I think some mini-medals are required to be collected to progress in the main story, so which ones are collected could affect runtime slightly depending on if there are restrictions on which ones are allowed to already be collected. For example, you could sail away to collect mini-medals, unlock something, then come back to the level you are challenging. Not being allowed to redeem mini-medals could help avoid some use cases of extra setup for runs 1-4.

I agree it should be added. Based on what I saw in a submitted run for Switch:

The run starts when you choose the chapter's "From the Beginning" option. The run ends when the animation for the blue ring ends at the end of the level, right before the screen goes black and then shows the score screen.
