As the newest addition to the Petscop !! moderator team, I want to clean up the speedrun.com page and make rule changes such as forbidding the usage of mobile emulators. As I make changes, I will edit this message and list any and all of my changes here. If you have any objections to changes made, please let me know; the success of this community depends upon the speedrunners, and I would like to make sure any changes made are for the benefit of the community.

-Updated the resources section: the .ips patches were actually made available for download, and the description for Niftski's splits was updated. -Removed forum posts containing ROM links. I know it doesn't matter all that much, but I want to make sure there aren't any ROM downloads per SRC rules. -Changed the subcategory names from "Any%" and "Any% Patch" to "Original" and "Fixed", respectively. I did this because I think it sounds better, but this one might be controversial, so let me know if you want it changed back. -Updated the game rules, outlining that mobile emulators are not allowed, and updated various category rules. An audit of mobile runs will occur at a later time.

1-1 as Star Mario is already an unofficial category that I and several other runners have ran. You can find the leaderboards for that unofficial category and others here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sG8juf8fxYGZk1-eg-lHk3FozKrMdm74_ltYixG8Sgs/edit#gid=0

Rewind features aren't allowed in speedruns just like loading save states aren't.

I can't speak for pellsson, but I would figure an update to the top 4 players shown on the title screen would come with version 6.0 or some other major update.

An optimal 4-2 without blazit clip would typically finish with 354 on the timer, and 1-1 FPG typically gets you 369 on the timer since you slow down a bit to do the FPG. In game time isn't the best metric of how fast a level was played (especially in a level like 8-4). Based off what you said, I'm going to say that you would get a mid 4:58, under the assumption that you saved the 1-1 FPG framerule, the optimal 3 bump framerule in 4-2, and did 2 frame walljump in 8-4. If you were to go for a mid 4:58 though, it's a much better idea to just do the 1 frame walljump in 8-4 instead of 1-1 FPG.

Nestopia UE also fixes some issues with Nestopia 1.40, including audio delay. That was Niftski's primary reason for switching to UE anyway.

Yeah, it's been the actual world record for a while now. He just never wanted to submit it. I said I would verify it for him, but I was kind of lazy.

Check the category extensions page, where there is a category called 8-4 IL. Niftski and LeKukie have both completed 8-4 in 44.294, a whole 9 frames faster than the 8-4 shown in the video. Taven's 44.443 is still the fastest 8-4 performed in an actual run, however.

@linny356 The 8-4 was 44.443 (8-1).

@supabloxyball Yeah, crazy stuff. Niftski told stream he was going to do 9 4:54 attempts as a joke, just like how Kosmic did 9 4:55 attempts and got his 4:55.913. The madman got the 8-1 frame rule save on his FIFTH attempt, and you can see it here:

@Zbomb Take all the time you need. Glad to see your interest in documenting a spliced human theory run. I'm sure plenty of people would help you gather information for your video.

@Zbomb You may want to take a look at Niftski's new Any% WR. In that run, he played 8-2 one framerule faster than previous WR runs and the 8-2 in your video. By doing a very precise jump over the tall pipe and specific bullet bill glitch manipulation, he saved a framerule. You should probably include that, if you choose to revise your spliced run video.

Also, on that note, you also did not showcase the faster 8-1 framerule achievable using a fast acceleration at the start of the level and a flagpole glitch at the end of the level. Many runners have performed this at some point, but Niftski got the framerule save on his fifth 4:54 attempt (you can see it in his most recent YouTube video). I don't know if you chose to leave that out or not.

There's basically no reason to invest in an NES Classic for speedrunning this game. The NES emulation on Switch is better in every way, suffering less from input lag compared to the NES Classic. In addition, both the Switch and NES Classic use HDMI, making CRT not viable for those systems. Even if you prefer the feel of an NES controller, there are wireless NES-style controllers for the Switch that you can buy as long as your NSO subscription is still active.

Yes, the NES emulation on Switch inherently has input lag, plus your TV might add additional lag, but I would say your best option is to stick with the Switch, and try to reduce input lag on your TV by turning on "Game Mode", if your TV has that feature. That's the best you can do if you can't/don't want to play on an NES or emulator. Also be aware that by playing on Switch, you lose around half a second during a five minute run compared to NES/emulator runners because the Switch (and NES Classic) have a framerate of 60 FPS compared to the NES/emulator framerate of around 60.0988139 FPS.

I can't speak for drubzyy per se, but the ROM he used for his Petscop !! run is almost certainly identical to the "original" version of the game you can use on any other NES emulator. It's not like ROMs are made specifically for mobile emulators or anything. Also, I'm pretty sure he used Nostalgia NES as his emulator, but I think you already knew that.

AIISON is perfectly acceptable, and many runs done on Nestopia using the code have been accepted on the leaderboards. AISSON on FCEUX/console and AIISON on Nestopia both function identically, anyway.

By second warp zone, are you referring to the World 6, 7, and 8 Warp Zone? Either way, you should be able to access the warp zones the same way as in the original game, since the Switch version hasn't been changed.

You should be able to download an older version of OpenEmu that will work with MacOS 10.12 from this GitHub page: https://github.com/OpenEmu/OpenEmu/releases

Otherwise you might be out of luck, assuming you only have MacOS.

The Piranha Plants not spawning in 1-2 was actually a side effect of the bug that prevented 1-2 from being completed, so they spawned by fixing the bug. I think the new patch should be added as subcategories just to keep things simple.

Also, for All Levels, you can't just start in 2-1 and play until 8-4 because completing each world triggers the code to have you return to the title screen, since that code will always trigger if the world counter is equal to or greater than the "final world", which in this hack is World 1. This means that you have to manually select each world on the title screen, which makes things interesting because you can't keep your powerups in-between worlds. Basically you would select World 2, beat 2-5 and return to the title screen, select World 3, beat 3-4 and return to the title screen, etc. Whether soft resetting to return to the title screen quicker should be allowed or not is up to you.

Edit: By the way, I haven't exactly fixed 1-2 crashing. I was able to fix the enemy objects not spawning when you start the level, which was why the 1-2 above ground warp didn't load and the Piranha Plants didn't spawn, but I haven't quite figured out how to fix the game crashing when respawning at the midpoint. In fact, if you could access the 1-2 underground in this new version, it would still crash just like respawning at the midway point does. None of this really matters for speedrunning, but I guess 1-2 is just a weird level. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Hello everyone. I discovered the cause of the bug preventing the player from completing World 1-2, and was able to fix it. This allows the game to be beaten, since you can now go to 1-3 and finish the game. Now that I have made a version of the game that can be beaten, could this fixed version possibly be added as additional categories?

World 1-3 would make for an interesting level that would be tough to optimize in runs and would allow for individual frames to be saved, much like how individual frames can be saved in 1-2 in the standard version of Petscop !!. Not only could you make an "Any%" and an "Any% (Pipeless)" category for this new version, but you could also make an "All Levels" category using the Second Quest level select feature much like the "All Levels" speedrun of the hack "Super Mr. Krabs."

Here's a link to my fixed version of the game. Just use this patch on an unmodified ROM of Super Mario Bros. and you're good to go: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1p2XDBdL9t4G4Wy710PBel8QX7zta4dgs/view?usp=sharing
