@sYn and if I may highlight a specific part of the link you posted:

"Just because something isn't in writing doesn't mean it is allowed."

Always something to keep in mind. Even when it involves something that would be newly discovered and technically legit, such as a 0-day major skip, or a game-changing strat. C.Y.A.: that's what it's all about.

I'm aware I may be opening a can of worms here, so I won't drop any names. I'll leave it up to those involved in this activity to identify themselves if they wish. And yes, if you, the reader, happen to do that, I'm ready to face criticism for bringing this up.

Regardless I've come across runs that have had the game's moderator add critique to the submission itself. Not just extra info or notes relevant to the run, but rather critique and comparison to said moderator's own run.

I wonder how people feel about this. Is it disrespectful? Is it no big deal? Should a moderator uphold their duty of impartiality when adding anything to a submission that is not their own? Is it stepping out of your jurisdiction as a moderator? Is this an abuse of privilege? Is it part of the privileges?

I personally believe this trespasses the bounds of moderation duties, and that it is at least morally questionable.

I think that could be an interesting discussion to have amongst runners and game moderators alike.

To be fair, modifying a ROM is never accepted in official runs on most boards except for a few fringe boards.

As we all know, nothing lasts forever, and our classic consoles are bound to fail at one point or another. Plus, the costs of repair and/or modding is a factor to keep in mind.

Enter MiSTer: basically a FPGA platform used to replicate (not emulate) consoles on a hardware level. There are already a lot of popular console cores released for the platform. The fact that it is an FPGA platform means, in layman's terms, that the console is replicated based on its physical/electronical properties rather than interpretation of its software tech. This results in the same type of accuracy you see with consoles released by Analogue (NT, Super NT, Mega Sg, etc), as these are FPGA-based as well.

With that said, I was wondering what was the general opinion of the community on this emerging platform. Are there concerns about the platform? Experiences? Speedrunning experiences, perhaps?

Discuss!

While I agree that music game speedruns are essentially "menuing" runs with long pauses called "songs", I do not see why the existence of those games' leaderboards would bother you at all.

Why not let them have their fun? Because you don't approve of it? Yeah, nah.

CanadaMarthSR5 years ago

Now that's some unwarranted sense of entitlement! The gall it takes to actually demand these... damn!

As someone who finally got his hands on a working 1.03 version for PS3 and who plans on running the game, I'd say it would be fair.

As far as I could tell, the PS3 version won't allow the cut scene skip, nor will it allow the huge level skip for level 1.

One thing that could be added is a custom variable for version numbers. AFAIK, the only version numbers floating around are 1.00, 1.01, and 1.03.

As a misc category, why not? :)

Good day,

The Switch version coming from Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) is allowed as it's the original rom that is being fed to the Switch.

However, the US and JP versions from Kunio Kun: The World Classics Collection are not allowed, as these have got major QoL improvements implemented in them, most notably with system lag. Therefore, it would not be on equal footing with the original game.

Should runs of this version ever be made, we will add a leaderboard for it.

[EDIT: It appears that there doesn't seem to be any interest from the playerbase for this version. Therefore, this version will be removed from the leaderboards until there is significant interest. However, until then, the ARC Systemworks versions will NOT be eligible on the current leaderboards.]

CanadaMarthSR5 years ago

Saw that the "Switch" version that you ran came from the NES online games package, which is fine as it's the original game's ROM.

One thing that will need to be reviewed will be the version on the Kunio Kun compilation game that got released in Japan, as that one has "lag-free" versions of the NES and Famicom games with QoL improvements added to them, which would obviously deviate from the norm when it comes to the original game.

Will watch your run momentarily.

Hey, it's me again.

Just wondering if there would be any interest in having a New Game Plus category, as the Switch's mode swapping feature behaves in most ways like a NG+ mode.

I am currently using that to learn the routing and gain muscle memory in terms of maneuvering the character through the map and dungeons. I'm aware there are quite a few games, such as Chrono Trigger, that are having a NG+ board, so I thought I'd bring that here. It could also serve as a "noob-friendly" misc category to run before getting in the "big leagues", if you will. :)

Thoughts?

I'd like to point out a possible way of exploiting one of the switch version's features, namely the 2D/3D switching.

Basically, this allows you to switch between modes, by taking your current exp, items, gold, and casino tokens, and transferring those to any of the other mode's checkpoints prior to the current one. It's basically a New Game Plus that doesn't require the game to be finished.

So for instance, one could play the game until the final dungeon is available, get the Nebula Sword, Evac, save, switch back and forth between modes and restart at the final dungeon checkpoint. This would effectively reset the treasure chests that were taken, and would allow to dupe the Nebula Sword. Do that 6 more times, and you've got an overpowered party of Eleven, Erik, Silv, and [Mystery 8th party member] dual-wielding "Disk 1 infinity minus" swords (with Eleven still rocking the Sword of Light).

I'm sure other creative uses of this duping method could be found to further break runs.

Now would that be allowed, or should the rules be amended to state that mode switching is forbidden? On one hand, this is not the way it's intended to be played, but on the other hand, you're using an in-game mechanic that's readily available to achieve this, which is in line with what any% is all about from a general standpoint. I'd personally be fine with the verdict on this either way.

Just thought I'd put that out there before someone tries that out in an actual run.

I'm a multiboxer, and was wondering if this is something you would allow for dungeon runs.

Furthermore, I was wondering if dungeon runs only count when done from within their intended level range, or if they also count when outleveling them.

Thanks in advance!

It would indeed be more fair to those who'd like to use characters other than shotos. So yeah, sure! Go ahead with that change!

Speedrunning isn't Smash. It's not a matter of "Fox only, no items, final destination".

CanadaMarthSR5 years ago

Or perhaps WE should be the ones to adapt. Play the game how it was originally made, as opposed to modifying it to "suit our arbitrary whims".

That's what speedrunning is all about: finishing a game as fast as possible using what the game has to offer.

Games were not made with speedrunners in mind. Therefore, RNG is something we all just have to deal with.

Hi!

I'm MarthSR, your new moderator for this game.

Over the past months, there were a few things that I noticed, and felt like they needed to be addressed. As such, T3tsuya graciously accepted my offer to help out.

One thing that got brought up is the fact that several (if not most) runs were done with more than one coin, despite the fact that there was a 1cc rule in effect. While 1cc runs are fun challenges, they also gate speedrunning of this game for no valid reason. Therefore, the 1cc rule has been revoked. If there is demand for a 1cc category, I will gladly add that category alongside the existing ones. Plus, there's nothing preventing a 1cc run from being posted in the regular categories if your time is better. 2 for 1 deals are fun! :D

Furthermore, I've also added subcategories for coop runs, as it wouldn't be fair to have 2 player runs compete against 3 player runs. So the two now have separate leaderboards.

That's it for now. Feel free to post in the forums should you have further suggestions.
